A diesel engine
works on the
principle of
internal
combustion of
fuel oil. The
pistons of the
engine are driven
by the controlled
explosion of the
fuel-air mixture,
and
corresponding
rapid increase in
pressure inside
the cylinders.
A marine diesel
engine is
designed for non-
stop operation.
From the time the
ship departs from
a port until it
reaches another
port, the main
engine has to
run. This could
last several
months.
The heat from the combustion of fuel have to be taken away continuously
otherwise the metal components will become damaged. The material properties
of the engine parts can change when it reaches high temperatures. Thermal
stress can occur leading to cracks, deformation and weaknesses in the material.
