Environmental issues that are handled in our partnership

The objective of Energy Wise Houses is to create a new platform for housing with low energy
consumption, low annual costs, simple maintenance, low service life costs, no connection to
municipal drains or district heating, i.e. a house with a minimal impact on the environment.
Solutions that can be applied on a large scale. In addition you have the selection of other
construction material, lighting etc.

Energy Wise Houses are entirely environmental and ecocycle adapted. As supporting
documentation for the project we have used a checklist that is a result of the evaluations
of the ecocycle projects we have conducted in Sweden and abroad.

Energy Wise Houses show how we can incorporate environmental and ecocycle adapted houses
in existing developments with antiquated infrastructure. Completed projects that involve single
family houses where the existing vegetation has been preserved to the greatest possible extent.
The houses are located to ensure a minimum of excavation work. The solution for Energy Wise
Houses also works for apartment blocks, offices, schools and commercial constructions.

Energy Wise Houses have been created by combining the SplitBox and Koljern techniques

SplitBox is an energy and waste system that through modern Koljern is available as basement slabs, suspended foundations
ecocycle technology is designed to handle the total energy needs and full climatic barrier. The products are manufactured of

SplitBox - combined energy and waste system
for minimal environmental impacts
SplitBox is an energy and waste system that through modern ecocycle technology is designed to
handle the total energy needs of a property using a combination of technology for ventilation,
heat recovery and handling of water and drainage. The system has been developed to totally
eliminate the risk of contamination to water from drainage in properties with private drainage
systems, and to reduce energy needs and the environmental load by using reliable technology.
The system solution is available for secondary residences, homes and apartment blocks.
The technical solution means that you are not dependent on the connection to a communal
drainage grid and that the dry fraction that the process produces has a high nutritional value
and can be used as soil improvement material for fertilizer.

Effective process entirely ecocycle adapted

Energy is recovered from the drying process, domestic wastewater and house ventilation.
Organic waste from the kitchen is pulverized in a waste disposal unit. Faeces/paper is
processed together with organic kitchen waste in special drying processes. The nutrient content
of the urine fluid is reduced through precipitation/adsorption. In a final stage, cleaning of all
wastewater takes place through oxidation to enable local infiltration directly into the ground
without further actions.

The SplitBox patent, drying process and cleaning method have been ”productised” into one
system that will be manufactured as a prefabricated unit and can be sold as a turnkey product.

Complete unit that does not require a large space

SplitBox is supplied as a complete unit with three functional components that can be adapted
according to needs and type of dwelling and contains:
• Waste handling with a drying process that treats the waste fractions from WC, organic waste
from the kitchen as well as bath, dishwashing and domestic wastewater.
• Energy recovery from the drying process, domestic wastewater and ventilation.
• Energy production for process, heating, ventilation and hot water.
• The floor drains in the wet rooms also serve as ventilation ducts for extract air.

The placement of the SplitBox is adaptable and is based on how the housing space is utilised.
Our turnkey delivery includes the technical solution for placement and adaptation of
components such as piping. The SplitBox format is 2 x 1 x 2 m.

Optional source of energy production

Energy can be produced using a heat pump, biofuel, sun panels, electricity or other source depending
on how frequently the process is to be utilised and where it is to be based. The ability to choose your
source of energy production means that virtually all types of dwelling can be considered.

SplitBox for houses is located in a module cabinet. For larger

installations, such as apartment blocks, SplitBox has been
constructed in several module cabinets, all based on the capacity
the building requires.

Koljern - glass ground and climatic barrier for sound
indoor environments and reduced energy consumption
The Koljern technique offers the entire construction industry a superb solution for its environ-
mental and quality work. Our products are available as basement slabs, suspended foundations
and full climatic barrier. The structural engineering benefits and the long-term gains benefit
consultants, contractors, building proprietors, private house owners and ultimately society and
the environment.

The products are manufactured of cellular glass panes (foam glass), aluminium sheet, light-
weight steel beams as cladding, such as Steniskiva. These materials have no capillary absorbency
which might lead to damp damage. Problems with damp are often caused by the construction
material not drying out properly, or that the material is subject to damp from capillary absorp-
tion. Tight schedules are another reason.

Koljern satisfies the new damp and energy demands from BBR and:
• Provides a sound indoor environment by preventing problems with odours, damp and radon.
• Cannot rot or grow mouldy, not affected by vermin
• Produces no thermal bridge on the floor in relation to the outer walls.
By way of example, concrete slabs on the ground give cold floors to external walls.
• Retains its insulation capacity over time.
• Good working environment without any risk of allergies and no heavy lifting.
• Sturdy design and maintenance free.
• Good compressive strength, supports up to a five floor timber house
• Reduces energy consumption.
• Long sustainability with 25 year guarantee.
• Rapid construction time, no desiccation
• Dry construction.
• Keep outs noxious animals such as mice and ants.
• Manufactured exclusively of natural material and can be recycled when the house is demolished.

Climatic barrier
The Koljern climatic barrier includes walls, floor structures out to the open, primary, support-
ing and secondary, infill walls. The climatic barrier is specially designed for buildings in damp
environments, such as public baths and the timber industry as well as buildings in countries
with warm and damp climates. The Koljern technique was awarded the Swedish Building
Industry's Environmental Prize in Västernorrland in 2005.

The climatic barrier reduces the need of adding energy and emissions of carbon monoxide
content in buildings, maintains an even cold temperature in housing in warm climates and
is a sustainable insulation material in buildings as it does not mould or is affected by noxious
animals. It is also fire proof and the construction makes it simple to correct any damage. Any
internal water damage does not impair the insulation.

Energy Wise House from a global perspective
Climate gains
The energy needs for heating or cooling drop drastically regardless of climate. An example from
the north of Sweden shows that the energy needs for hot water, heating and electricity may be
around 40–50 kWh/m2 per year,which is a third of the normal demand of around 130 kWh/
m2 per year. All energy is renewable without affecting the climate.

The SplitBox technique eliminates all nitrogen and phosphorus emissions.

In addition, the technique offers the following advantages:
• Recycling of energy and thereby lower needs and costs for purchased energy.
• Minimising emissions of nutrients, viruses and bacteria as well as pharmaceutical residue.
• Recovery of plant nutrients that can be used as fertilizer in the garden or for agriculture.
• Waste is handled in a dry state.
• Short break-even period when compared to other energy/waste solutions.

Global perspective
Both the SplitBox and Koljern techniques can be used on a global market with the aim of
generating low annual costs and low lifecycle costs for long-term sustainable construction with
a minimal effect on the environment. The initial construction investment is slightly higher but
is paid back quickly through lower running costs. And you can add the benefit to the environ-
ment to this.

The technique does not require expensive and complicated infrastructure solutions, and
constructions using the techniques are planned to be self-sufficient to the greatest possible
extent. The Koljern technique can be combined with local construction material and local
building traditions.

The SplitBox technique is adapted to work locally where the infrastructure has not been rolled
out, as it is entirely independent with many options for energy production. It also gives the
possibility of local solutions for energy supply. This makes it possible to apply both techniques
globally, regardless of climate, and the turnkey solution with Energy Wise Houses.

Expansion is possible through licence manufacturing and does not require any expensive
machinery. The houses are prefabricated in the factory which gives an even and unbroken
manufacturing process without any impacts from the weather. Assessing the size of the market
could be difficult, but the need for this technology is considerable.

Applicability
The techniques can be used for both private houses and for mass production. A suitable house
height for the Koljern technique is one to five stories. The technique can be used in existing
buildings and the sections of the house can be reused. The material has many applications and
not just for housing.

The patented SplitBox technique can also be used for treating organic waste from the food
industry and agriculture, on both a small and large-scale.

New actors
The Koljern technique has been officially verified. Koljern has been tested by The Swedish
Testing and Research Institute, SP. The house currently being built in Njurunda, outside of
Sundsvall, will be verified in detail. Meters for temperatures, dampness and flow are installed
and will be regularly evaluated. The material will be available for the construction market.

Gothenburg University is conducting scientific tests of the SplitBox technique for testing.
Existing installations of SplitBox already show after a short period that the need for supplied
energy has dropped by around 2/3.

It is natural that we are very keen to demonstrate our construction technique for Energy Wise
Houses. The show house in Njurunda can be viewed at www.koljern.se. A website dedicated to
Energy Wise Houses is planned.

Several of the houses are already display objects. Presentation material that illustrates and
describes the technique in an easy to understand way is available and being continually
developed. Our solutions have already captured the attention of the media.

In addition to communicating our solutions, we can also offer training in ecocycle adapted
construction.
