IFSSO to hold next General Assembly in the Philippines

The International Federation of Social Science
Organizations (IFSSO) will hold its 19 th General
Conference on 18-20 November 2011 in Batangas City,
Philippines. The theme of the conference is “Social
Science Perspectives on Human Security”. The Lyceum
of the Philippines University (LPU), an associate
member organization of IFSSO, will host the said
conference.
The theme and venue of the conference were decided
by the IFSSO Executive Board during its meeting in
Bali, Indonesia last 1-2 May 2010. The other details of
the conference were finalized during the visit by the
IFSSO Secretariat to Batangas City last 22 July 2010.
During this visit, IFSSO Secretary General Nestor Castro
and Acting Secretary General Joseph Lalo met with Dr.
Leon Ramos, LPU’s Director for Local and Institutional
Linkages and IFSSO Board Member. The Secretariat

CSSP-UP is the newest member of IFSSO

The College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) of the
University of the Philippines (UP) was recently accepted as Associate
Member of the International Federation of Social Science Organizations
(IFSSO). Based in UP’s Diliman campus, the CSSP is composed of
the following academic units:
• Department of Anthropology;
• Department of Geography;
• Department of History;
• Department of Linguistics;
• Department of Philosophy;
• Department of Political Science;
• Department of Psychology;
• Department of Sociology; and
• Population Institute.

Profile on IFSSO Member Organizations: The National Research Council of Thailand

The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) was established by the Thai government in 1959. It was
designated by the Cabinet as a national body that is responsible for implementing research-related concerns. The
Council is also assigned to give advice to the Thai Prime Minister on matters pertaining to research.
The NRCT is chaired by the Thai Prime Minister. The NRCT Executive Board consists of the chairmen of
the 12 disciplinal committees and a maximum of five specialists appointed by the Cabinet, including the NRCT

The CSSP houses one of the
University’s research unit – the
Third World Studies Center
(TWSC), which publishes the
journal Kasarinlan. Aside from
Kasarinlan, the CSSP also publishes
the Philippine Social Sciences Review
(PSSR).
Dr. Michael L. Tan is the Dean
of CSSP-UP. Dr. Maria Theresa
Ujano-Batangan is the Associate
Dean for Academic Affiars while Dr.
Dr. Neil Martial Santillan is the
Associate Dean for Administration
