Auto signaling for Railway level crossing with Voice

The Aim of the Project is to develop Automatic indicating Signals for manual Railway Crossing.
The signals and indications are necessary for Railway level crossing to avoid accidents, in particular if it
is unmanned crossing.

Different types of sensors can be used to sense the in-coming Trains and initiate suitable action for
indication. In the Project, an IR (Infra Red) sensor set up is kept below the Railings to sense the
movement of trains. Whenever the Trains pass through the track where the sensor is mounted, a sense
signal is generated. The detected signal is processed by a Microcontroller and gives indication on Red
LED. Additionally voice message is also broadcasted.
Green LED indicates the absence of train movement and the publics are free to cross the track. The
movement of trains from either direction is considered here. There is a display provided to indicate the
number of trains moved per day.

The IR Transmitter and Receiver set up are placed on both the left and right direction along the railway
track. This is to ensure the detection of the movement of train well in advance. The sensor detection is
by way of reflection of infra red signals. Whenever a sensor detects a signal due to an in-coming train,
the warning Red LED glows till the train pass through the level crossing.

Another redundancy option in case the IR sensor fails,will be to use RF transmitter and receiver.The RF
transmitter will be placed both at the front and back end of the train.The receiver will be placed at the
level crossing.Thus as the train approaches the level crossing the receiver will receive signal from the
transmitter and the gates will be closed.

The Block diagram and the Scheme of placing the sensors and LEDs are given in the fig.
Here the IR transmitter -1 and receiver-1 is kept on the left direction along the track side of the Level
crossing. Similarly IR TR-2 and IR Rx-2 is kept along the right direction along the track. A
microcontroller processes any sensed signal and drives RED/ Green LED. A speech IC and a speaker is
used to broadcast a message continuously till the train cross the level crossing. No. of Trains crossing
per day is also displayed.

Components: Microcontroller, PCB, IR sensors, LEDs, Speech IC Speaker, DC power Supply circuits,
RF sensor etc.
