conducted twelve days Meelad
Conference from 4 February, 2011
to 15 February, 2011 in Chennai.
V.M. Syed Ahmed, the trustee and
the treasurer of Tamil Nadu IUML
said the trust, apart from other
social and charitable activities,
had been conducting the Meelad
Conference annually for the
past three years. This year the
conference was inaugurated
by the IUML State President
Prof. K.M. Khader Mohideen on
February, 4, 2011 with much
fan fare and with large public
attendance. While addressing
the Conference on the inaugural
day the Dalit leader Thiruma
Valavan stated that peace in the
world would be possible only by
professing the teachings of Prophet
Muhammad(sal.)
The life of prophet was not a
sermon but a living examples of
cardinal virtues, reflecting all the
complexities of human life, drawing
distinction between virtue and vice,
between good and bad and to
whichever side one turns, his life
shines as a beacon of light guiding
humanity to righteous deeds. The
Holy prophet is the prototype of
human and spiritual perfection, for
the Holy Quran states “you have
indeed in the messenger of Allah
an excellent exemplar”, and in
another place Quran mentions, “
We sent thee not save as a mercy
for the people”.
In his valedictory address,
the state Finance Minister Prof.
K. Anbalagan said that the prophet

What is communalism? No
unambiguous definition for the
term communalism could be found
in any of the available dictionaries
Different definitions and meanings
have been given to the term by

of tribalism. Tribal crisis is rampant
in almost all African countries
and presently Sudan has become
a typical example for the tribal
conflict in Africa.
In the Indian context, the term
communalism assumes a different
meaning. It has a religious or

UNIFORM CIVIL CODE OR
UNITY IN DIVERSITY?
“The Muslim Personal Law is
a religious obligation on each
and every Muslim. Now, the
protagonists of a uniform civil
code say that uniformity in way
of life leads to national solidarity
and unity. I very much respect the
concern for this national solidarity
and unity. But I must submit
that it is unity in diversity, the
principle which we cherish, rather
than uniformity in a plural society
like India, that leads to national
solidarity and unity. We have so
many uniform laws, civil procedure
code and so on and so forth. Why
then do we still face challenges to
national unity and solidarity despite
all these uniform Laws? So, what I
was pointing out is that India is a
plural society and the basis of this
plural society lies in our adherence
to the principle of unity in diversity.
The principles of Muslim Personal
Law do not injure anybody else.
They need not; they need not
take any offence if a Muslim wants
to continue with his adherence
with the Shariat; the Shariat is
immutable, as I said, and the
fundamental principles of Shariat
are not open for reconsideration.
India is a plural society. It is
a cradle of several cultures. The
unity and solidarity of our country
lies in achieving unity in diversity.
The talk of a uniform civil code
with its implications, agitates the
minds of the minorities, especially
the Muslims. The talk of the
uniform civil code is an attack on
the traditional spirit of tolerance
and secular ideals of our society.
It is not through uniformity that
we can maintain our society.
Uniformity leads only to the
destruction of the very basis of our
plural society. It opens floodgates
to needless and avoidable conflict
and confrontation. I have,
therefore, pointed out the nature
of the Muslim Personal Law, the
implications of Article 44 and
the continuation of Article 44
encouraging certain sections to
continue with their campaign
giving rise to conflicts, resentment
and agitated minds.
We are told that a common civil
code will promote national unity.
This is a false illusion. It is an
exploded myth that any uniform
civil code promotes national unity.
We all know, for example, that in
the United States of America there
are separate marriage laws, divorce

laws and other laws in different
States. Though there are different
marriage, divorce and other laws
in different States yet the unity of
the US is not affected. Nobody
thinks of bringing a common law
for the sake of the unity of the
U.S, It will also be realized that the
fierce World Wars, I and II, were
fought among people, among
nations, with almost a uniform
civil code. They all believed in
the Christian Civil Code. They all
believed in one code and yet there
were wars. These are all exploded
myths that any uniform civil code
will bring about unity. Unity comes
from respecting the cultural and
all human rights of the people
of every section; unity does not
come from trampling upon them
and imposing forcibly any thinking
from above. We have article 25
of the Constitution of India which
gives religious freedom. There is
an explanation to the word ‘Hindu’
that explanation says that the word
Hindu includes Sikhs and others.
So, as far as they are concerned,
there is almost a uniform civil
code. There is almost a uniform
civil code applicable to Hindus,
Sikhs and others, according to
the definition given in article 25.
Yet, we know that on occasions
serious dissension unfortunately
came between these communities
despite the fact that they always
had a uniform civil code among
them.”

What Price Freedom!
The Heroic Mopilla uprising
T he Mopilla uprising was a valiant uprising by the Mopilla Muslims
of the Malabar region of kerala against the tyranny of the British in India.
For a moment, it shook the very edifice of the British rule in India, as
the mighty British army had been jolted by the determined on slaught of
the Mopillas. The army had to send a S.O.S. to call for the assistance of
the Naval force to repulse the attack.
The Mopilla uprising in 1921 was the culmination of a series of revolts
by the Mopillas as a reaction against the heavy handed crackdown
of the khilafat Movement, by the British Authorities, in the Ernad and
Valluvanad Taluks of Malabar.
The Mopillas were swift in their initial attack and took control of police
stations, British Govt. office, judicial courts and Govt. treasuries. It was
alleged that Mopillas attacked some Hindus also whom they said were
helping the police in suppressing their uprising.
In fact public orders were issued by the Mopilla leaders that no
harm should be done to the Hindus and those Mopillas who resorted to
looting would be given exemplary punishments. The leaders of uprising

The most prominent leaders of the uprising were Variankunnath
Kunjahammed Haji, Sithi koya Thangal, and Ali Musliyar
For six months from Aug 1921, the uprising extended over 2000
square miles 2/5th of the area in South Malabar region of Malabar
District under the Madras Presidency. An estimated 10000 people lost
their lives, another 2000 were deported to Andaman island prison and
around 10,000 went missing.
Some of the most notable encounter was at Pookkotur in which British
troops sustained heavy casualties and had to withdraw for safety.
One of the most notable events during the suppression was later
known as the “Wagon Tragedy” wherein 70 of 90 Mopilla prisoners
were suffocated to death in a closed railway goods wagon. The wagon
Tragedy the historian Sumit Sarkar reffered to it as the “ Black hole of
Podanur.
In its magnitude and extent it was an unprecedented popular upheaval
the like of which was not been seen in kerala before or since. While the
Mopillas were in the vanguard of the movement and they bore the brunt
of the struggle, several non –Mopilla leaders were in active sympathy
with the cause of the Mopilla fighters, giving the uprising the character
of a national upheaval. In 1971, the Govt. of Kerala recognized the
active participants of the event as freedom fighters.

Inventions normally take a long time to develop into their modern
forms. An invention is a step on the road to the ultimate goal. For
example, the development of the bullock cart from the potter’s wheel
took around 700 years, which later paved the way for development of
all modes of transport. Similarly, the invention of Jacquard’s loom in
the early 18th century enabled the automation process in the calculation
machine, which subsequently became a major foundation for the growth
a new form, composition of model device or a process. It may be based
on pre–existing forms, compositions, processes or ideas. Some times,
there may be radical breakthroughs, which may extend the boundaries
of human knowledge of experience. Invention is the first occurrence
of an idea for a new product or process, while innovation is the first
attempt to modify it for betterment. Therefore, innovation today is
not invention. It’s about taking the product, putting in a new process,
thinking around it and marketing it. Innovation is about working on
practical utilitarian features that enhance the product. It could be
incremental improvement in a product of it may be a business innovation
(creative new product idea that does not alter established business
models), strategic innovation (the process of re–inventing strategies)
and innovation requiring different managerial approaches. The person
who does the innovation is called an innovator.
Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) of Department of
Scientific & Industrial Research ( DSIR) is one of the largest network
programme to nurture individual innovators.
It is hoped that these small efforts of TePP will create a new breed of
dynamic and budding innovators in years to come to make India – Most

the system. This necessitated huge R & D expenses. For which TePP
came as a magic wand and I could take my journey forward.
ASSOCIATION WITH TePP
After research and work, I came to a stage when with out some exter-
nal assistance in terms of finance and technology, moving forward would

be difficult. The novel program of TePP by DSIR came to the rescue
then. The proposal was accepted and I could realize my dream framing
up with their support.
PATENT STATUS
The application for the patent status has been forwarded
FUTURE PLANS
Once the prototype and trial runs are over, we plan to go for com-
mercialization of the concept through our channels. I want to make the
product reach the market so that the end users can benefit from it.

Elections
New Delhi: IUML has fielded 18 candidates in the Haridwar district
panchayat elections to be held from 19-22 February 2011. Mr. Ghalib
hassan, General secretary, Uttarakhand State IUML has stated that
the party is trying its best to win as many constituencies as possible
in the upcoming elections. Party candidates include Mr. Rajpal and
Mr. Gurmel Singh who are contesting from scheduled cast reserved

IUML STATE CONFERENCE
Resolutions passed in the
Mohalla Jamaath Solidarity Seminar
Indian Union Muslim League
State Conference was held on
December 11, 2010 at the Railway
Ground Tambaram, Chennai. It
was a mammoth conference
attended by large numbers of
people from Tamil Nadu, Kerala,
and gulf countries.
In the morning session, the party
conducted Tamil Nadu Mohalla
Jamaath solidarity seminar. The
State party president Prof K.M.
Kader Mohideen, presided over the
seminar. The following resolutions
were passed in the seminar.
1) Uphold the Honour of
Mohallah Jamaat
The community will be honoured,
if the Mohalla Jamaat a unique
feature of Islam. remains stronger
. The Mahallah Jammat Shall not
confine its duty just to administer
the Mosque and maintain the burial
ground but shall strive to become
a model Mohalla Jamaat. It has
become the necessity of time
that Mahallah Jamaat to establish
and manage Baithulmal, Shariath
Panchayat, Madrasa Academic,
Vocational institutes libraries,
Muslim women Aid societies, poor
students Educational Aid poor girls
marriage Aid, old age guardianship
intrest free loan Aid, Free Medical
Aid and Maintain Registers of
Marriage, Birth and Death.
It has become a duty to announce
in Jumma prayers and create an
awareness in the Mahallah Jamaath
so that the community shall avail

and other concessions.
Mahalla Jamaat shall strive
to organize Meelad -u- Nabi
celebrations and Idd Milan
celebrations annually by inviting

shall not give room to disturb this
discipline.

This conference appeals to
the office bearers of the Mahalla
Jamaat and the ulemas to ensure
that the Jumma Qutuba discourses
are explained with clarity the
Shariat law to the growing younger

Reasonable Remuneration
to the Ulemas
The Conference appeals to the
Mahalla Jamaat Administrations
that they shall happily come forward
to provide a reasonable adequate
and honest remuneration to the

4. Tamil Nadu Fatwa
Council
In order to dispel the confusion
regarding the announcements on
the date of the First Moon citing
during the fasting days, celebration
of Idd Festivals and to guide the
Muslim Community in the Religious
Matters, the Conference resolves
to act unitedly to create the Tamil
Nadu Fatwa Council under the
Chairmanship of Tamil Nadu Govt
– Chief Khazi comprising District
Khazis representatives of Jammat
–ul-ulema association and the
representatives of the Mahallah
Jamaat.
5. Tamil Nadu Mahalla
Jamaat Aid Fund
This conference resolves to
create Tamil Nadu Mohalla Jamaat
Aid Fund to help the Mohalla
Jamaats which experience
difficulties to maintain mosques
in small villages and mosques in
the most backward urban areas in
Tamil Nadu.
6. Mahalla Jammat
consultation Committee.
The conference resolves create

once in ten years has begun now.
It is the necessity of time to ensure
that not even a single person name
is left out in the census.
All the rights including the
reservation are given on the basis
of the census only. Further all
purpose useful Bio – Matric card is
to be issued to every one.
Hence this conference appeals
to mohalla Jamaats that every
ones name from the community is
registered in the census with out
any one left out.
8. Alertness Campaign
to get Govt Aids and
Concessions.
The central and state
governments provide many
welfare schemes and Aids to the
people belonging to the minority
community. This conference
appeals to all mahalla Jamaats
to start alertness propaganda in
each and every Mohalla to make
announcement in Mosques to alert
the people so that all the Aids
including educational scholarship
cash aid for marriage are fully
reached to our people.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I feel honoured to be here today
amidst this august gathering to
mark the important occasion of
International Day of Solidarity
with the Palestinian People. All of
us present here, representing a
wide cross-section of countries, in
our own ways are here to express
our solidarity with the people of
Palestine in their struggle for their
legitimate rights. Our gestures of
support also convey that it is in the
interest of the entire international
community that a lasting solution
is found at the earliest resulting in
a sovereign, independent, viable
and united State of Palestine living
within secure and recognized
borders with East Jerusalem as its
Capital, side by side and at peace
with the State of Israel.
Excellencies,
Indians have always placed
Palestine close to their hearts. Even
before independence, India had
demonstrated its solidarity with the
Palestinian people and had looked
forward to the emergence of an
independent democratic state in
Palestine in which the rights of all
communities would be protected.
India was the first non-Arab
State to recognize the PLO as the
sole legitimate representative of
the Palestinian people in 1975 and
in 1988 it became one of the first
countries to recognize the State
of Palestine. India opened its
Representative Office in Palestine in
1996 following the establishment of
the Palestinian National Authority.
Here I would like to quote from

aspirations of Palestinians within
and outside the occupied territories.

meeting with the then President of
Palestine Authority Mr. Yasser Arafat
on 17th September, 2004 when
I carried the Goodwill Message
from the Hon’ble Prime Minister
of India alongwith life saving
medicines and special vehicles
to the Palestine Authority. India
reiterates its unwavering support
to the Palestinian cause at every
available opportunity and forum
and that includes the visit of the
Hon’ble President to Syria from 26-
29 November 2010 and by Hon’ble
Prime Minister in his message on
the occasion of International Day
of Solidarity with the Palestinian
people, organized by the UN on 29
November 2010.
Excellencies,
Since the opening of the
Representative Office, India has
also extended material assistance to
the Palestinian National Authority.

The assistance has been for
humanitarian relief, development
projects, establishment of
educational and training facilities,
budgetary support etc. India has
been involved with training a large
number of Palestinian officials from
economic, industrial and financial
sectors and special courses for
Palestinian diplomats have been
conducted at our Foreign Service
Institute. India extended further
budgetary support of US$ 10
million to the Palestine National
Authority earlier this year in
addition to a similar contribution
last year, to assist in their work of
reconstruction and development.
As you may also be aware, on the
occasion of the 60th anniversary
of the establishment of United
Nations Relief and Works Agency
for Palestinian Refugees in the Near
East (UNRWA), India increased
its annual contribution to US$ 1
million from last year. We have also
pledged to contribute this amount
next year as well.
Under the IBSA Fund, along with
Brazil and South Africa, we are
implementing a Sports Complex in
Ramallah.
We believe the West Asian region
is of vital importance to India with
more than 4.5 million Indians
making it their home. The region is
also an important source of energy
for India. India wishes to see the
creation of an environment for the
earliest possible resumption of
dialogue. We share the perception
that the conflict in West Asia is
essentially political in nature and
cannot be resolved by force. In line
with our support for United Nations
Security Council Resolutions 242 and
338, India supports a negotiated
solution resulting in a sovereign,
independent, viable and united
State of Palestine living within
secure and recognized borders with
East Jerusalem as its Capital, side
by side and at peace with Israel as
endorsed in the Quartet Roadmap
and United Nations Security Council
Resolutions 1397 & 1515.
India has supported the Arab
Peace Plan, which calls for withdrawal
of Israel to pre-1967 borders, along
with recognition of Israel and
the establishment of the State of
Palestine with East Jerusalem as
its capital. India has called for an
end to Israeli settlements in the
occupied Palestinian territories
and for an early and significant
easing of restrictions on the free
movement of persons and goods
within Palestine.
India had welcomed the ‘direct
talks’ between Israel and Palestine.
The continued stalemate in the
situation and hardening of positions
is a matter of concern. We hope
that the talks would be resumed
leading to final resolution of the
conflict. As a responsible member
of the international community and
as a country with long-established
ties with West Asia, India desires
to see a peaceful resolution to
tensions in the region through
peaceful dialogue.
I am happy to note that the
Palestinian Embassy has started
functioning from its new Building
in Chanakyapuri, which was built
as a gift of the government and
people of India. The foundation
stone of the Building was laid in
the presence of our Prime Minister
during the visit of the Palestinian
President Mr. Mahmoud Abbas to
India in October 2008.
On this occasion, I would like
to re-affirm India’s consistent
and unwavering support to the
friendly people of Palestine and
reiterate India’s belief that a just,
comprehensive and lasting peace in
the region can be achieved through
negotiations and dialogue so that
a sovereign, independent, viable
State of Palestine living side by side
within secured borders, with the
State of Israel, becomes a reality.
I thank the Indian Council for

PONDICHERRY IUML CONVENOR
Janab C.V. Sulaiman Haji, the Pondicherry State IUML Convenor a
senior Member of the Party, works tirelessly even at the age of 70,
for the cause of the party from his head quarter Mahe. In 2006, the
IUML National President Banatwala nominated him as the President of
Pandicherry. He has attended Party National Council Meetings held in
Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore.
A part from party works, he has been involved in many social
activities, and intimately associated with many Mosques and Madrasas,
doing yeoman service for the cause of Islam. He has been serving as
the General Secretary of Chalakkarapally Committee and poozhil Patlli
Committee.
In 1980, he contested the Pondicherry Assembly Election from Mahe
Constituency but lost the election by a meager margin.
His contribution as a journalist is highly laudable and has been serving
as a Reporter for the Chanrika, Malayam Daily published from Kerala.
He is an Arabic Teacher by profession and has to his credit 35 years
long service in the field of education. Janab Sulaiman Haji, is a father of
four Children, two daughters and two sons. He has endeared himself
with one and all by his selfless service for the cause of the party and
community as a whole.
KHALED ZUBAIDI
ANDHRA PRADESH IUML PRESIDENT
Janab Khaleid Zubaidi, the Andhra Pradesh IUML President is one of
the senior members with four decades of intimate association with the
party. Janab Zubaidi has to his credit of working under different leaders
of the Andhra Pradesh such as Ghouse Khamoosi, Shareef Siddiqi, Mirza
Munawar Ali Baig and Osman Bin Saleb Shaik. He stood with the party
through thick and thin facing many ordeals during the emergency and
demolition of Babri Masjid. He ardently worked for the merger of
National League with IUML in Andhra Pradesh.
As a Municipal Councillor Mehboob Nagar, he was responsible for
implementing many civil welfare works, including getting houses allotted
to thousands of homeless people in his locality.

in the district of Tanjore, the granary of
Tamil Nadu, the IUML State President
Professor K.M.Kader Mohideen said in the
party head-quarters Qaid-e-millath manzil,
Chennai that he was very much excited to
witness a spontaneous and overwhelming
response from the Mohallah Jamaat in
the district of Tanjore. Infact, it was a
conglomeration of Muslim Jamaths from
different parts of the district converged at
Brunei Darussalam dining hall, Iyambettai
on February 5, 2011 to have free, frank and fruitful interaction with
the IUML leader. It was a pleasant meeting and the discussion was
encompassing all aspects of Mohallah Jamaats. Prof. K.M. Khader
Mohideen emphasized the need and necessity of Mohallah Jamaths
to work unitedly, to preserve the national unity, protect the communal
amity and promote the cultural identity of the Muslim minority. He
also warned the Jamaat representatives not to fall prey to the evil
designs of divisive forces in the community.
The concept of Mohallah Yatra is a brainchild of IUML and it has
been properly devised, planned and perfectly executed to attain its
goal - unity and solidarity of the Muslim community through the
integration of Muslim Mohalla Jamaats.
Presently, the victory of Mohallah Yatra has been reverberating
throughout the state of Tamil Nadu and it has awakened the Muslim
community from its political hibernation.

Swami Aseemanand, who was
arrested in November 2010 for his
alleged role in the 2007 Mecca
Masjid blasts, in his confession,
recorded before the magistrate in
December, had said that a right-
wing group was responsible for
the 2006 Malegaon blasts. His 42-
page confession, recorded in Hindi,
has been reported in Tehelka’s
latest cover story. He has named
senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar,
the murdered RSS pracharak Sunil
Joshi, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur
and senior RSS pracharaks Sandeep
Dange and Ramji Kalsangra,
among others, as key conspirators
in the terror blasts.
After Swami Aseemanand’s
explosive revealations on the
involvement of Hindu right wing
activists in the terror incidents in
India, more skeletons seem to be
emerging from the closet. After
his confession to the CBI about
the saffron link in the Samjhauta
blast case, Aseemanand has now
revealed that he was also involved
with the Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid
blast as well as the Malegaon
blast.
He has busted the involvement

Malegaon blasts.

Ahmed, Noorulhuda Doha, Rais
Ahmed, Mohammed Ali, Asif
Khan, Javed Sheikh, Dr Faroogue
Ansari and Abrar Ahmed - for
their alleged involvement in the
Malegaon blasts. Likewise in all
the blast cases Police immediately
suspected and informed the press
that only ‘Islamic Terrorists”
were behind the blasts. So many
innocent Muslim youths were
arrested and detained for years
even without bail.

organisations raised their voice
