    Assignment Sheet: The Giver by Lois Lowry

    Pittsburgh Public Schools

    As part of the curriculum for the school year, 2007-2008, students


    were asked to respond to the following question as a WriteAbout for
    their reading of The Giver. After the in-class discussion, students
    were asked to take notes on the discussion and then revise their
    WriteAbouts into a formal persuasive essay for grading.

     Lowry ends the novel The Giver very abruptly. She leaves it up
    to the reader to decide what she or he thinks happens at the
    end. What do you think happens at the end of the novel? Do
    you think that Jonas and the baby live? State your opinion
    clearly and then support your opinion with reference to the text.

    This assignment will be graded using the Persuasive Writing Rubric.
