7th Grade Overarching Question: What are the big systems that order our world?
The Way Things Work (Math & Science), Wellness (Health)
Interdisciplinary Unit Title: Man and Machines: Are hackers game changers?
Length: 5 Minutes

Stage 1: Desired Results

Established Goals:
Illinois Standards for Life Science:
● SPI 0707.1.2 Systemic Relationship - Students will interpret a chart to explain the
integrated relationships that exist among cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
Illinois Standards for Embedded Technology and Engineering:
● SPI 0707.T/E.1 Tools - Students will identify the tools and procedures needed to test the
design features of a prototype.
● SPI 0707.T/E.2 Protocol - Students will evaluate a protocol to determine if the
engineering design process was successfully applied.
● SPI 0707.T/E.3 Unintended Consequences - Distinguish between the intended benefits
and the unintended consequences of a new technology.
● SPI 0707.T/E.4 Bioengineering - Differentiated between adaptive and assistive
bioengineered products (e.g. food, biofuels, medicines). Research bioengineering
technologies that advance health and contribute in our daily lives.
Enduring Understandings: Students will understand that...
1. Living beings, like machines are comprised of system codes (e.g. DNA, RNA) and rules that
govern survival.
2. Hacking through bacteria and/or viruses causes a system (game) change, otherwise known
as evolution.

Essential Question:
Are hackers game-changers?

Skills: Students will be able to...

● will show critical thinking by interpreting and explaining the integrated relationships that
exist among cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
● Hypothesize, gather data, infer and apply evidence from prototypes
Digital Media
● Simulation Game You Make Me Sick by Filament Games based on UDL (Universal
Design for Learning) www.filamentgames.com/projects/gils
Knowledge: Students will know...
● How to design a pathogen via simulation
● Compare and Contrast viruses vs. bacteria
● How to infect (i.e. hack) a host
● How codes change a system
● Understand that bacteria and viruses can be negative or positive to the system
● System Protections (e.g. antibiotics, antiviral meds and antivirus software)
● Introduction to positive aspects of viruses nanotechnology and genetic engineering

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Performance Task: Pre-assessment
Self assessments
Simulation
Discussion

Stage 3 Learning Activities

Pre-assessment (1 minute) Two groups (1) viruses and (2) bacteria
Demo playing the game (3 minutes)
Q & A Discussing the game (1 minute)

Extra Support for Response to Intervention (RtI) and Special Needs:

The game is based upon Universal Design for Learning and has various accessibility features.
Teachers will scaffold learning adapting the game as needed.

Enrichment for Gifted Education:

In the Sci-fi movie The Matrix Agent Smith says to Morpheus, “Humans are a virus.” What did
he mean by that? Explain your reasoning...
