Johnny Morant (b.1982)
Harnessing tone to describe atmosphere has always
intrigued artists; it is this preoccupation with light
and shade that compels Johnny Morant. Immersed
in an urban environment, rich in angular forms,
Johnny finds himself surrounded by irresistible
subject matter. He looks beyond the obvious
sensationalism to pursue the delicate intricacies of
the understated and records moments and incidents
that challenge the viewer. With an approach to
light that harks back to the vision of the Camden
Town Group, he chooses to explore the delicacies of
midtones and ethereal suggestiveness of shadows.
His work demonstrates a progressive approach that
still applauds the importance of traditional values of
figurative painting.

This is Johnny’s second solo exhibition here at

the Tryon Gallery and we are thrilled to bring you
a new installment of this young artist’s restless
journey towards a very promising future. Following
this Exhibition, he is planning a trip to paint the
challenging environment of Hong Kong and the
Far East.
