Special Report: Solutions for People with Thyroid Symptoms

Hello, I'm Dr. Keith Lynch. I've been in private practice here in Charlottesville since
1998. I’m one of six Board Certified Atlas Orthogonist chiropractors through
Sherman College of Chiropractic, which means we do all of our treatments without
any twisting, cracking, or popping. You’re watching this video today because you or
someone you know has been labeled with thyroid symptoms. In other words,
they’ve either been diagnosed or treated for a hypothyroid or decreased thyroid
function, or an increase of hyperthyroid symptoms.

Hypothyroid symptoms are often symptoms that seem to be very general at first.
People often have fatigue. They will have joint pain, neck and shoulder pains. They
could be having carpal tunnel syndromes. Or pain, numbness, or weakness and
tingling into the arms and hands. Often times, thyroid problems can lead to mental
issues such as not remembering things and having mood swings. Generally
speaking, when there’s a problem with the thyroid, it can affect several different
areas of your body. Often times these people say they’re cold and fatigued. And
that’s pretty much a constant factor through their life.

And if you’ve been diagnosed with this condition, or a similar condition, then you’ve
probably seen countless doctors because of it. So what makes us different from
every other doctor you’ve seen up until this point? And the answer to that question
is, we treat and evaluate people both metabolically and neurologically.

In other words, when I say metabolic, this is what that means. We are going to do
blood tests to identify what your specific condition actually entails. In other words,
we look at everything that is involved. So what we would recommend would be a
complete blood count. We would run a complete metabolic panel, a lipids panel,
and a thyroid panel.

Now I know what you’re thinking. You’ve already had bloods tests done, and I’m
sure they came back normal. What I find most people bring me when they bring me
their blood tests is two things. Number one, nobody every looks at the optimal level,
they only look at the reference range. Now what does that mean?

Let’s take thyroid stimulating hormone for example. The reference range for TSH is
0.45-5.0. That is a very wide range. You could drive a truck through that. What’s the
optimal range for thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH? It’s 1.8-3.0. That’s your
optimal range of function for that.

Now the other thing that I find about blood tests is that you don’t have a full thyroid
panel run. In other words, most people come in and they can usually even tell me.
Well they checked my TSH, and it was a little low, but normal. One test is going to
evaluate your thyroid? I don’t think so.

Typically what happens is when you are checking thyroid stimulating hormone, you
are not even testing the thyroid. You’re testing the anterior and posterior pituitary in
the brain, which secretes TSH. TSH is a hormone that is designed to call out to
your thyroid and asks it to produce more T3 and T4. An actual full thyroid panel has
many more things that are getting tested in it. We would be testing your total T3 and
T4 as being produced by the thyroid. We’re also going to test your free T3 and T4.
We’re going to test reverse T3. We’re going to check resin T3 uptake. We’re going
to test for thyroid anti-bodies as well as thyroid binding globulin. And free thyroxin
index.

All of those factors tell us what the function is of the thyroid as it’s producing as well
as the feedback mechanisms of the body, knowing what that thyroid is doing.

Let me give you an example of that. When your body produces T3 and T4 in
response to the release of TSH from the anterior and posterior pituitary, it makes T4
and T3. It only converts 7% of your hormones into T3, which is the most active form
of thyroid hormones. The rest of it gets produced as T4 and circulates through the
body.

Now, 60% of that is produced by the liver. The liver actually converts T4 to an active
form of T3. Another 20% gets converted in the intestines as well as muscles, nerves
and heart. Those areas convert T4 to T3. The reason that’s important to test all of
those factors of thyroid hormones is because there can be several different areas of
a problems. Many people with thyroid symptoms feel like, “I have a bad thyroid.”
And that may be the furthest thing from the truth. Most of the time, people have
increased or decreased thyroid function because of another part of the body not
working right. Unless you run those tests, you’ll never know.

The next thing that we would be testing is sensitivity testing. Our sensitivity testing
is designed to find out whether or not you have a food intolerance or sensitivity to
wheat – which is wheat, oats, rye, barley, gluten (as well as to milk, eggs, soy, and
yeast). If you are ingesting any of those foods, and you have sensitivity for it, it’s
going to increase inflammation in the body. And it can lead to autoimmune
reactions. Autoimmune reactions are where your body is actually attacking itself.
And if you have a condition like that, it can be devastating on both the thyroid and
overall health of your body. And you need to know that.

We test for that as well as do a genetic test to find out whether or not you carry the
genetic markers for one of those sensitivities. So if you’re carry a gene for wheat
and or gluten, and you are eating wheat or gluten, it’s going to drive inflammation in
the body and it can be destroy, brain, nerve tissue, or other tissues in your body. It
needs to be tested for, identified, and addressed.

Some of the symptoms of one of these sensitivities, or all of them if you have them,
could be frequent or chronic pain. Frequent indigestion. Bloating after you’re eating.
Loose bowl movements. Constipation. Ulcers. Vomiting. Often times a number of
these things are present when you’re being exposed to foods that you carry
sensitivity to.

The next thing that we’d be testing is your adrenal stress index. Now you’re adrenal
glands sit right back on top of your kidneys. They respond to stress in the body, and
they help your body adapt. They produce cortisol as a by-product. Often times, as I
said earlier, people with thyroid problems have mental fogginess. They have
forgetfulness. If you have high levels of cortisol in your body, it will be toxic to the
hippocampus in the brain, which is where short term memory is stored.

That is one of the frequent reasons people have those problems. And when you
identify and address those, all of a sudden those issues start to fade. All of a
sudden you know where your car keys are. You know why you walked into a room.
When you call somebody, you’re going to know why.

Increased levels of cortisol will also cause you to gain weight. It can exacerbate a
blood sugar problem. And it can also drive insomnia problems. If you’re not
sleeping well, it can be as a result of high levels of cortisol in your body, due to
adrenal fatigue.

We also run immune panels in our office. Immune panels are test for cytokines or
the blood cells in your body that react to antigens. Let me explain what that means.
Basically we can talk about the immune system in two parts. We’re going to talk
about regulator cells as well as killer cells. Now, your regulator cells are your B
cells, and they are like the generals. They will tell your body when it needs to
respond to something in the blood stream as well as what you should be
responding to, and they also tell it when to stop.

Now your killer cells, or your T-Cells, are like your Army guys. They are going to out
scour the blood stream. They are going to identify what needs to be attacked, and
are going to attack it and clean up afterwards. If those two systems are not in
balance, you can have an auto immune reaction. An auto immune reaction is where
your immune system is having an inappropriate response to something in your
body. It could be your own tissues, or it could be something that you’re ingesting.
Either way it’s going to create a response where your body is going to suffer from it.

We test for finding out which of those states are increased or decreased, and will
bring that back into balance by finding out which antigen or foreign substance or
foreign invader, if I can use that term, into your body is. In other words, you could
have a virus or a parasite. You could have bacteria. You could have food sensitivity.
And any of those could drive an immune response in your body.

With our testing, we’ll identify if there is that situation going on. We’ll also identify
what that is, clear it, and then re-test that immune panel to make sure your body is
functioning correctly. When you have a health condition like thyroid problems, either
increased or decreased thyroid function, it can affect your entire body. It’s not just
taking this one pill, or taking iodine and your body’s going to do better because
everybody says if I have an iodine deficiency, then my body needs iodine.

If you have a problem with your thyroid, and you’re taking iodine, that could be like
throwing gasoline on a fire. You cannot just supplement something into your diet
and hope or expect it to help. You cannot drug yourself out of a metabolic problem.
You need to identify what it is, with the appropriate testing, fix it, monitor it with
follow up testing, and make sure it’s clear and then know how to support that
afterwards.

That’s what we do here. That’s why we’re getting the results we get.

We test for infections in the gut, like H. pylori which are present when people have
ulcers in their stomach. We also test for intestinal permeability. Now why would you
even test for those types of things is somebody has a thyroid problem, right? The
thyroid is right here, stomach and intestines are way down here. What’s the
connection?

Well what I said earlier is that your body only makes 7% of T3 in the thyroid, it’s the
T4 that circulates through the body, going to the other organs like the liver and
intestines where it gets converted to an active form of thyroid hormone. So you
could have had a bug. Let’s say maybe you had the flu or a cold, and you were put
on antibiotics. Those antibiotics could wipe out the proper flora balance in the
intestines. Once that happens, your intestines stop working well. When that
happens, your body could stop converting T4 into T3 in the intestines and create a
problem with the way your thyroid problems are being regulated.

If you’re not testing these areas, you don’t know. You’re probably taking
Levothyroxine or Synthroid or Armour or some other synthetic thyroid hormone
trying to replace what you think your body doesn’t have, and you don’t even know if
these areas are a problem. Or you’ve been told you also have IBS. You have
irritable bowel syndrome, also. What you really need to do is find out what the
underlying conditions are that’s driving that and get it corrected. It’s the only way to
be healthy.

We also test for neuro-transmitters. Once again neuro-transmitters are the

chemicals in your brain that have to communicate with each other, to make sure
that brain function is working properly, so that the rest of the function throughout the
body works. So what is the connection there?

Your brain is saturated with thyroid binding hormone sites. If you’re not getting
enough thyroid hormone in your body, it’s going to affect your brain. Likewise, if
you’re brain isn’t functioning properly, if you have decreased serotonin or decreased
dopamine, or if you’re not getting enough melatonin -- all of those can make a
major impact on how well your thyroid works.

Remember I had said it was the part of the brain, the pituitary, which actually tells
the thyroid what it should be doing. There’s a constant feedback mechanism all the
way through there. If you don’t test for that, and address that, you’re missing it.

We also check your hormones through Hormone Panels. Yes, this is just as
important as doing a blood test to find out what your thyroid is doing. You need to
be checking estrogen and progesterone. Whether you’re a male or a female, you
have estrogen and progesterone and they need to be in balance. You have
testosterone, DHDA, cortisol. All of these things need to be tested for and
addressed. If you’re not, you’re missing things. And not only are you having a
thyroid problem, but it can develop into something else. Like irritable bowel, and
then something else, and something else, and then you’re told you have
fibromyalgia. Or chronic fatigue. You’re just setting yourself up for further problems
unless you really know what’s happening in your body.

We’re also testing for inflammation through blood tests. We’re looking for high
levels of homocysteine in the body which can affect the blood and cardiovascular
effects of your body. Glutathione is one of the master antioxidants in your body, and
that may be something that we address a lot of your condition with, especially very
first, to try to calm down the inflammation, and get the body working right, so we
can get things back on track.

Now, I told you that we treat people and evaluate people both neurologically and
metabolically. What I’ve just described is the metabolic side of that. Now we need to
talk about the neurological part.

In our office, we use brain based therapy. Because your brain runs your entire body,
and unless it’s functioning properly, you’re going to have health deficits. Brain
activity is required to have fuel and activation - fuel in regards to oxygen and
glucose. And then activation is also what’s important to get it working properly. In
our office, we’re going to assess that fuel to make sure that your body’s getting it.
And then we’re going to use special therapies to actually activate the part of the
brain that isn’t working properly.

It would be similar to going to a personal trainer. Having them evaluate you, and
find out which areas of the body need to be exercised the most and first. That’s
what we do with our brain based therapy. We’ll do neurological testing. We test the

integrity of the cerebellum, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and the insular
lobe, making sure that everything’s firing at an appropriate frequency or rate. We
often see one side of the brain, either having a decreased frequency of firing, or
another side of the braining having an increased frequency of firing. By balancing
out the hemispheres and the cerebellum, and focusing on getting your anomatics or
blood chemistry working properly, that’s when we see people heal. That’s when we
see people well, and they express full health.

We may use vibration therapy. We may use auditory and visual therapy. We can
use effector and choleric stimulation to increase the frequency of firing of the brain.
We also use laser therapy in our office. The laser system we use is the Erchonia
Cold Laser System, or low level laser therapy. It’s the same laser system used by
professional athletes like Lance Armstrong, the New York Jets, and the Kansas City
Chiefs. Even the US Army uses the Erchonia Cold Lasers for their work that they
do. They have a specific burn unit, as a matter of fact, that uses Erchonia Cold
Lasers to treat injuries and burns.

We also use detoxification therapy in our office. We use the EB Pro Detoxification
Unit to decrease toxins and inflammation throughout the body. That is how we help
speed up your healing process. Once we’ve run all those tests and know what’s
happening in your body, both the neurological tests and the metabolic test, we can
put a plan together that’s going to help you get your life and your health back.

Before we do that though, you’ve got to ask yourself the following questions. How
has your thyroid condition affected your job, your relationships, and your finances?
What has it cost you in time, money, and happiness? Where do you picture yourself
with your condition a year from now? How’s it going to be three years from now?
Most of these conditions, kind of start small and they snowball as they go along. If
you’re condition isn’t under control now, how is it going to be a year from now or
three years from now? You need to think about that. What is it worth to you to see if
we could even improve your condition?

If you’re serious about exploring these tests and treatments to get your thyroid
condition back under control, then I encourage you to call our office at
(434) 235-8456. Let us know that you’re interested in having an evaluation with me.
If you do that, you’ll come in, and you’ll bring any blood tests, or any other special
testing that you’ve had done in the past. Let me review that with you and go over
that. Let me run a neurological screening evaluation to find out how that nervous
system is affected.

We’ll make another appointment after that, and I will go over with you whether or
not I will accept you as a patient. I don’t accept everybody and the reason is
because not everybody is going to respond to this type of care. I am only going to
offer to help you if I honestly believe I can help you with your condition.
