J.A. JONES, Charlston, NC

Marine Manager, Braddock Lock & Dam, Duquesne, PA
This dam, located on the Monongahela River, is the first use of innovative in-t
he-wet construction in this country by the USACE. Responsibilities included all
planning, preparation and implementation to float, launch, tow, outfit and immer
se floating dam segments from the point of manufacture to the point of installat
ion. These segments were 106-feet wide by 333-feet long by 40-feet high.
GUY F. ATKINSON CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, So. San Francisco, CA
Marine Manager, Land Level Transfer Facility, Bath, ME
Develop methodology and equipment to float, transport -mile and set 400-ton pre
cast concrete units at depths of 25-feet water in tidal and current impacted riv
er without the use of cranes. Units to be winched into position to tolerances wi
thin -inch. Jacks in the beams to be used for final vertical positioning. Horizo
ntal positioning to utilize survey towers on the unit and involve GPS survey sys
tems as well as land based equipment. Develop methodology, procedures and equip
ment to install approximately 1000 each P/C, P/S concrete piling socketed into 1
0,000 psi basalt rock to support the wharf. Instrumental in changing the CIP st
ructure above the piling to a precast cap, beam and deck system to allow for con
tinuous year round work at elevations minimally projecting above the river. Res
ponsible for the procurement and rig up of the entire project marine fleet consi
sting of approximately 35 each crane and support barges, including a jack-up bar
ge. This entailed barges upwards of 72 by 250-feet with 2 each 250-ton cranes wi
th 210-foot boom, drill rig, four-point anchoring system and two- point spud sys
tem.

Estimator
Estimate preparation in Main Office on heavy civil projects. Also troubleshooti
ng assistance to various projects as needed.
Marine Manager, 1st Avenue Bridge, Seattle, WA
Ballast, roll-on to load, transport bascule bridge halves onto barges, move int
o position for erection, and erect bridge. The halves were assembled on site adj
acent to the permanent location. Loading, moving and hoisting took place at two
different times within the life of the project. This involved large loads; criti
cal positioning of the load on the barge, as well as critical positioning of the
barge and hoisting equipment; coordinating ballasting and tide impacted loading
conditions. Coordinated with river traffic on the Dwamish River to schedule wo
rk to minimize impacts to surrounding activities such as river traffic and bridg
e openings of existing bridge facilities.
Marine Manager, Floating Bridge, Seattle, WA
Load, transport and install floating bridge opening replacement sections on the
520 / Evergreen Point Bridge on Lake Washington. This involved multiple tugs, r
estrictive working access to get the units into the tuning fork shaped pocket of
the floating bridge without damage to the floating bridge and critical ballasti
ng requirements to align for make up connections to the floating sections. This
was also done under time sensitive 24 hr around the clock schedules.

Marine Manager, New Jamestown Bridge, Saunderstown, RI
Responsibility to develop procedures and equipment, and to oversee the installa
tion of cylinder piles, H piles and pipe piles, both from land and water. Respo
nsibility to manufacture, handle, transport approximately five-miles and positio
n barges approximately 40-feet by 175-feet by 16-feet to pick up and move precas
t concrete bridge segments. These segments were approximately 72-feet by 200-fe
et by 15 feet weighing upwards of 2400-tons each. These tows were handled with m
ultiple tugs and positioned between bridge piers for hoisting with 32-strand hoi
st units mounted on the pier table caps, to a height of upwards of 150-feet abov
e the water. Responsible for the procurement and rig up of the entire project m
arine fleet consisting of approximately 30 each crane and support barges. This i
ncluded the movement of the movement of cylinder piles and AASHTO bridge girders
from Norfolk, VA.
Project Manager, Various Projects
Project Manager of numerous projects, mostly marine in nature. These ranged in
cost from 25 to 125 million. These were interspersed with estimating, trouble sh
ooting, consulting and oversight assignments.
Manager, Harbor Precast Company, Wilmington, CA
This was a Company owned subsidiary located in the Los Angeles Harbor in Wilmin
gton, CA. This was a commercially competitive facility serving the entire West C
oast regularly and international markets periodically. Products were prestressed
structural concrete in nature and included piling, bridge girders, deck slabs a
nd various precast building and parking structure components. Delivery was by bo
th land and water.
Various Projects
