Mercy hurst's vision move to a
reality," said Speicher. "It was
worth all of the trouble and the
consistent work which was
done to finish the building in
the last few weeks before
classes started."
Audrey Sitter Hirt, for whom
the building is named, is a '49
graduate of Mercyhurst. She
graduated with a bachelor's
degree in business education.
She married P. William Hirt in

The new academic center
opened for classes on Tuesday,
giving students the opportunity
to be part of a select group
whom will perform The Vagina
Monologues, the proceeds of
which will go to victims of
sexual assault.
Written and begun by
playwright Eve Ensler,
Monologues condenses 200
character-driven interviews with
women worldwide. Speaking of
their sexuality, the pieces range
from the comic results of one
woman's first menses to tragic
stories of rape and mutilation.
Monologues was performed
by 8,000 groups across the
world on "V-Day" (Feb. 14)
2002. Mercy hurst's efforts this
year will join with that of
thousands of women, including
former celebrity performers
such as Lisa 1 ing, Gillian
Anderson and Jane Fonda.
Ten percent of the funds will
go towards a Native American
women's charity, and the rest to
a Tibetan women's group.

On Nov. 1, our Mercy hurst
men's water polo team ventures
to Princeton. New Jersey to
compete in their conference's
championship. This seasonthas
been trying, to say the least.
Despite their immense efforts,
the team has yet to win one
game. Their face-offs have
brought them to Grove City
College, Washington and
Jefferson, and Slippery Rock, to
name a few. Still no wins have
been brought back here to the
Hurst.
On a brighter note, this season
this year. Robinette is a 2002
graduate of Slippery Rock
University and originally hails
from Toledo, Ohio. When asked
how he felt about his team this
year, he responded that his
players work hard and are a
very "coachable" group of
athietes. Robinette alsoi
commented on his captains,
Rob Long and Chris Anderson,
in saying that they may not have
strong playing experience but
their leadership experience
helps to carry the team. The
coach admits that he entered
this season with no expectations
and has been disappointed at
times, yet he and the athletes
now know what to work on for

lovely city of Erie. Luckily I
found Aromas Coffeehouse,
located at 2174 West 8th Street,
which may be my new getaway
from the stressful life I lead as a
student at the Hurst.
None of the managers of Cafe"

much needed in this junior's life.
When the Starbucks opened
on 5th and State, I didn't rush in
for my Mocha Frappuccino; I
still haven't made the trip, and I
don't plan on it. While I do
enjoy my Starbucks cup o' Joe
every now and again, I am
partial to the small
establishments that are based on
humble beginnings and strive to
make an atmosphere for the
guest that is eclectic and
relaxing.

ago by a brother and sister duo;
they have been successful in
providing a wide variety of
flavored coffees, teas, espresso
drinks, chais, Italian sodas, and
all steamed milk
favorites. They also have fresh,
homemade muffins, scones,
biscotti, and cookies available to
complement any hot or cold

When you first step in to

display. This month all of the
artwork is from the Children of
the Inner-City Neighborhood
Art House. About every 2
months pieces from different
artists or groups of artists are
showcased on Aromas' walls
and are held for sale for the
public. The coffeehouse also
features local music artists every
now and then to add an extra
touch to the peaceful
atmosphere.
With both indoor and outdoor
seating, Aromas is a great stop
for a solitary person or for a
group of friends looking for a
new place to hang. In the
backroom they even have a wide
variety of board games to keep
you occupied as you intake
caffeine dose, after dose.
Aside from a great selection of
baked goods, Aromas also has a
nice food menu. Such features
include soups, salads, unique
sandwiches, and quiche; prices
range from only $3.50- $6.50. I
was fortunate to try their white
pita pizza which was wonderful;
it didn't take much to prepare,
but the melding of the
ingredients' flavors were, to
quote Mr. Food, "Ohhh so
good!" • I
As an avid tea drinker I had to
try their Mango tea, while my
friend tried their Huang Shan
Sunset tea, which had a sort of
peach flavor to it; both were
warmly delicious. I also tried
their homemade pumpkin
cheesecake which was sinfully
scrumptious.
I will definitely make a trip
back to Aromas, if not

"Hie Truth About Charlie' has
style and flare to spare.
There is a fun, mysterious
urgency to the film, harkening
back to the caperfilmsof the late
60s and early 70s. But where
'Charlie' fails and its source
material (Hitchcock's sublime
'Charade') succeeds lies in the
manner with which the former
sacrifices sensibility for
incongruence and style.
The Plot: The camera is
constantly playing catch-up as

The annual celebration of
Halloween is just around the
comer and if you don't know the
history of how it evolved then
you're definitely missing
out. So, starting with the word
itself, "Halloween," it's actually
a shortened version of "All
Hallows' Eve," the eve of All
Hallows' Day (Nov. 1).
One story claims that on All
Hallows' Day, the disembodied
spirits of all those who had died
throughout the preceding year
would come back in search of
living bodies to possess for the
next year. It was believed to be
their only hope for the
afterlife. Some religions even
believed all laws of space and
time were suspended during this
time, allowing the spirit world
to intermingle with the living.
Most of the traditions of
Halloween date back to
Samhain (sow-en), the ancient
Celtic New Year. Samhain,
which translates to "end of
summer," occurred around the
end of October, when the
weather started to get cold. At
its heart, Samhain was an
observance of all the things that
were happening during this
change of seasons.
The Celtic people, who came
together as a society around 800
B.C., kept sheep and cattle.
When the weather got colder,
the shepherds brought their
animals down from the hills to
closer pastures. This shift
changed daily life significantly,
In the winter months, everybody
stayed inside or close to home,
working on handcrafts and
spending time together.
Samhain also marked the final
harvest of the year, an event that
is commemorated by festivals in
many cultures.
Celtic tradition held that
turning points, times when
things change from one state to
another, had magical properties.

spirits ol" the dead traveled again

Naturally, the still-living did
not want to be possessed. So on
the night of October 31,
villagers would extinguish the
fires in their homes, to make
them cold, undesirable and
uninviting. They would then
dress up in all manner of
ghoulish costumes and noisily
parade around the
neighborhood, being as
destructive as possible in order
to frighten away spirits looking
for bodies to possess.
Some accounts tell of how the
Celts would burn someone at the
stake who was thought to have
already been possessed, as sort
of a lesson to the spirits. Other
accounts of Celtic history
debunk these stories as myth.
The Romans adopted the
Celtic practices as theii own.
But in thefirstcentury AD, they
abandoned any practice of
sacrificing of humans in favor
of burning effigies.
'I he thrust of the practices also
changed over time to become
more ritualized. As belief in
spirit possession waned, the
practice ol dressing up like
hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches
took on a more ceremonial role.
The custom of Halloween was
brought to America in the 1840's
by Irish immigrantsfleeingtheir
country's potato famine. At that
time, the favorite pranks in New
England included tipping over

weekend, losing to Findlay and
defeating Ashland.

State this weekend to improve

The Lady Lakers snapped a
two-game skid Saturday
afternoon, as they blanked St.
Cloud State 3-0 at the

with three games in the past four
days. Thursday, Oct. 24 was the
Lady Lakers fifth overtime win
of the season. Their only break
took place on Friday. The
weekend was full of one win and
one loss. Their overall record is
12-4-2 and 5-2-1 in the GLIAC.
For Thursday's game, the
Lakers traveled to the
University of Findlay. Each
team played a strong game. The
game ended in a 1-0 overtime
victory for the Mercyhurst.
Sophomore midfielder Julie
Kowzan scored the game-
winning goal at 9:35 in
overtime. This was Kowzan's
seventh goal of the season and
her second game-winning goal.
The Lady Lakers lost to Grand
Valley State University on
Saturday. This was the fourth
loss of the season for the
women's soccer team, with a
score of 3-1. Kowzan scored the
only goal for the Lakers.
Kowzan's goal was scored at

Friday night the Lakers began

Senior forward P.J. Hiscock
ignited the Laker offense with
back-to-back goals in the first
period, his first of the season In

managed just three shots on goal
to Mercyhurst's 14.
Early in the second period
freshman forward Dave Borrelli
scored his first collegiate goal.
The Yellow Jackets however
failed to back down, and
answered midway through the
period with two goals in 44
