The Entrance of Faith
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart,
Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the
word of faith, which we preach;
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.   

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God
hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.    

[For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God:   ]

Abraham Our father

Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision
also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.   
And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which
he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe,
though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who
also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his
seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of

under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go,
and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he
doeth it.
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto
you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.   [ $

And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying,
Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto
them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of
throughout the whole world.

The Faith OF Jesus

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the
life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and
gave himself for me. "  

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ
might be given to them that believe. " 

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
them that believe: for there is no difference:   

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that
which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: ( 

In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.  

Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God,
and the faith of Jesus. %

ºhen Jesus Rested in His Faith in His Father

« It is for thee that the Son of God consents to bear this burden of guilt; for thee He spoils
the domain of death, and opens the gates of Paradise. He who stilled the angry waves and
walked the foam-capped billows, who made devils tremble and disease flee, who opened
blind eyes and called forth the dead to life, -- offers Himself upon the cross as a sacrifice, and
this from love to thee. He, the Sin Bearer, endures the wrath of divine justice, and for thy
sake becomes sin itself.
Suddenly the gloom lifted from the cross, and in clear, trumpetlike tones, that seemed to
resound throughout creation, Jesus cried, "It is finished." "Father, into Thy hands I commend
My spirit." A light encircled the cross, and the face of the Saviour shone with a glory like the
sun. He then bowed His head upon His breast, and died.
Amid the awful darkness, apparently forsaken of God, Christ had drained the last dregs in
the cup of human woe. In those dreadful hours He had relied upon the evidence of His
Father's acceptance ›   given Him. He was acquainted with the character of His
Father; He understood His justice, His mercy, and His great love. By faith He rested in Him
whom it had ever been His joy to obey. And as in submission He committed Himself to God,
the sense of the loss of His Father's favor was withdrawn. By faith, Christ was victor.

The Time uch As Never ºas!

Had not Jacob previously repented of his sin in obtaining the birthright by fraud, God
would not have heard his prayer and mercifully preserved his life. So, in the time of trouble,
if the people of God had unconfessed sins to appear before them while tortured with fear and
anguish, they would be overwhelmed; despair would cut off their faith, and they could not
have confidence to plead with God for deliverance. But while they have a deep sense of their
unworthiness, they have no concealed wrongs to reveal. Their sins have gone beforehand to
judgment and have been blotted out, and they cannot bring them to remembrance.
Satan leads many to believe that God will overlook their unfaithfulness in the minor
affairs of life; but the Lord shows in His dealings with Jacob that He will in no wise sanction
or tolerate evil. All who endeavor to excuse or conceal their sins, and permit them to remain
upon the books of heaven, unconfessed and unforgiven, will be overcome by Satan. The more
exalted their profession and the more honorable the position which they hold, the more
grievous is their course in the sight of God and the more sure the triumph of their great
adversary. Those who delay a preparation for the day of God cannot obtain it in the time of
trouble or at any subsequent time. The case of all such is hopeless.
Those professed Christians who come up to that last fearful conflict unprepared will, in
their despair, confess their sins in words of burning anguish, while the wicked exult over their
distress. These confessions are of the same character as was that of Esau or of Judas. Those
who make them, lament the result of transgression, but not its guilt. They feel no true
contrition, no abhorrence of evil. They acknowledge their sin, through fear of punishment;
but, like Pharaoh of old, they would return to their defiance of Heaven should the judgments
be removed.
The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness,
delay, and hunger--a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The period of probation is
granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and
determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer. All who will lay

hold of God's promises, as he did, and be as earnest and persevering as he was, will succeed
as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long
and earnestly for His blessing, will not obtain it. Wrestling with God--how few know what it
is! How few have ever had their souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every
power is on the stretch. When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over
the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God.
Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling under the
power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. And even if they endure
the test they will be plunged into deeper distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because
they have never made it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have
neglected they will be forced to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement.
We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving His promises. Angels record
every prayer that is earnest and sincere. We should rather dispense with selfish gratifications
than neglect communion with God. The deepest poverty, the greatest self-denial, with His
approval, is better than riches, honors, ease, and friendship without it. We must take time to
pray. If we allow our minds to be absorbed by worldly interests, the Lord may give us time
by removing from us our idols of gold, of houses, or of fertile lands.
The young would not be seduced into sin if they would refuse to enter any path save that
upon which they could ask God's blessing. If the messengers who bear the last solemn
warning to the world would pray for the blessing of God, not in a cold, listless, lazy manner,
but fervently and in faith, as did Jacob, they would find many places where they could say: "I
have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." Genesis 32:30. They would be
accounted of heaven as princes, having power to prevail with God and with men.
The "time of trouble, such as never was," is soon to open upon us; and we shall need an
experience which we do not now possess and which many are too indolent to obtain. À

In that time of trial, every soul must stand for himself before God. "Though Noah, Daniel,
and Job" were in the land, "as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor
daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness." Ezekiel 14:20.
Now, while our great High Priest is making the atonement for us, we should seek to
become   ›. Not even by a thought could our Saviour be brought to yield to the
power of temptation. Satan finds in human hearts some point where he can gain a foothold;
some sinful desire is cherished, by means of which his temptations assert their power. But
Christ declared of Himself: "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me." John
14:30. Satan could find nothing in the Son of God that would enable him to gain the victory.
He had kept His Father's commandments, and there was no sin in Him that Satan could use to
his advantage. This is the condition in which those must be found who shall stand in the time
of trouble.
It is in this life that we are to separate sin from us, through faith in the atoning blood of
Christ. Our precious Saviour invites us to join ourselves to Him, to unite our weakness to His
strength, our ignorance to His wisdom, our unworthiness to His merits. God's providence is
the school in which we are to learn the meekness and lowliness of Jesus. The Lord is ever
setting before us, not the way we would choose, which seems easier and pleasanter to us, but
the true aims of life. It rests with us to co-operate with the agencies which Heaven employs in
the work of conforming our characters to the divine model. None can neglect or defer this
work but at the most fearful peril to their souls.
