The king found the hermit digging in his garden. The old man greeted him but
continued digging. The king told the hermit that he had come to find answers to his
three questions. The hermit listened but gave no answer and continued working.
The king observed that the hermit was frail and elderly and that the work was very
difficult for him. The king offered to take over the digging, and the hermit allowed
it.
The king dug for one hour. Then he repeated the question, but the hermit did not
answer. He worked again for another hour, and then repeated his questions with the
same results. This continued for a few more hours until the sun began to sink low
in the sky. Finally the king got discouraged. "I came to you for answers wise man.
If you have none, tell me and I will return home."
Just them someone came running up the path. They turned to see a man with his
hands pressed to his stomach and blood flowing from between them. He dropped
to the ground at the king's feet.
The king and the hermit knelt down and began tending to the man. The king
washed and bandaged the man's wounds. The blood continued to flow so he kept
changing the bandages. The king also helped the hermit to get fresh water, and to
help the man to drink.
Finally, the man slept and did not wake until the next morning. The king too slept
Later, when the man came running to us, the most important thing to do was to
care for him. If you had not bound up his wounds he would have died without
making peace with you.
Therefore the most important person was that man, and what you did was the most
important thing, and the right time was the time when you were doing it."
Moral
"You see, the most important time is always the present moment. It is the only time
that is important because it is the only time that we have control over.
The past we can only look back on and wish that we had done differently. The
future we can only imagine.
The most important person is always the one you are with in the present moment,
and the only important deed is the deed that does what is best for others."

Disappointed, he sat on the bank of a river. Suddenly, he heard the sweet strains of
violin music. Something mysterious touched him. He suddenly got the answer he
was looking for and he started dancing.
The carpenter was preparing the wood for the violin. The sheet metal worker was
preparing metal for the strings and the strings were meant for the violin. Life has
everything; all you need is to be able to connect the dots. You need to work out
new combinations. And for that you need creative perception.
You have to change the notion that difficulty is pain. In exercise, there is difficulty
but also joy. In sports, there is difficulty but there is joy. In your relationships,
when there is difficulty, treat it as joy. Just reprogramme your mind.
In prayer you don't have to do anything; just be available to God's grace. Prayer is
a deep readiness to receive God's flow. It is passive alertness. Go deep and you
discover your original mind… it is deep passiveness. A greedy mind is richer than
a Buddha, but rich with desires and greed; so a Buddha is 'poorer' than you are.
The Bible says: "Blessed are the poor for theirs is the kingdom of God."
The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens? They
do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love.
Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That
is how close two people are when they love each other.'
MORAL: When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words in
anger that distance each other.

One day Narada thought that he was the most pious man. The Lord told him to go

The God smiled and told him to take a cup filled to the brim with oil and carry it

The God asked, "How many times did you think of me?".Narada replied, "Lord

During one of his sojourns, the Guru gave his students a thin book to learn from
while He was away ... for about a week .
On his return, He asked them all whether they had learned the lessons. He had
given them . All answered positively except his favorite student. He had not done
the lessons.
The teacher asked him again in the hope that maybe there was some
communication problem .. Maybe he hadn't heard him well. The student again
answered that he had learned only one line from the book ..
The teacher blew his top so to say ... ONE WEEK and only a line .. and the boy
had the impudence to say.. He had learnt just one line ....
The boy kept his face down in complete submission to his Guru ..
Once upon a time there lived a great sage. He had many disciples who held him in
great respect. Some of his disciples were very pious in nature while others were
dull witted. These dull witted disciples used to feel jealous of the pious disciples
and blamed the great sage for partiality.
The Master tried to convince them that his teachings were similar to all and if there
is any difference I the wisdom it is due to their lack of sincerity and attention.
The Master was hurt but to appear fair to all and teach the jealous students a lesson
gave them a small and simple test. The test was to go to the nearby village and find
and bring one good fellow. The complaining disciples were overjoyed and rushed
to the village but to their bad luck they could not find one good guy ..every person
had committed some crime or sin.
They returned disappointed and accused the Master for giving them an impossible
task . They came back frustrated and said that there was no single good person
everybody had committed some crime or sin. The village was full of bad people
and challenged him that even his favorite disciples would be un able to accomplish
it.
Smiling the Master called one of his pious disciple and gave him the task of going
to the village and bringing one of the bad people. The jealous disciples were
surprised and accused the Master saying that as believed by them he had given the
easy task to his favorite disciple and he would face no problem in finding the bad
people as the village was full of them.
The grumbling disciples were shocked and then the master said “ your wisdom
blooms when you find a spark of virtue in everything, and it withers away when
you spot a vice in everything.
The world is a mixture of joy and grief, and your wisdom depends on what you
choose to take out of it. People who adopt a positive attitude in life, progress fast.
But those, who adopt a negative attitude, can only proceed slowly., if at all.
This story reveals how one should face life and its problem
"Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there
is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those
things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."
There once was a wise sage who wandered the countryside. One day, as he
passed near a village, he was approached by a woman who told him of a sick child
nearby. She beseeched him to help this child.
So the sage came to the village, and a crowd gathered around him, for such a man
was a rare sight. One woman brought the sick child to him, and he said a prayer
over her.
"Do you really think your prayer will help her, when medicine has failed?" yelled a
man from the crowd.
"You know nothing of such things! You are a stupid fool!" said the sage to the
man.
The man became very angry with these words and his face grew hot and red. He
was about to say something, or perhaps strike out, when the sage walked over to
him and said: "If one word has such power as to make you so angry and hot, may
not another have the power to heal?"
"Language does have the power to change reality. Therefore, treat your words as
the mighty instruments they are - to heal, to bring into being, to nurture, to
cherish, to bless, to forgive." - Daphne Rose Kingma
Before you allow a thought or a piece of information to enter your mind, put it
through the triple filter test of authenticity, goodness and value.
In ancient India there was a king who had everything except a child. He
worshipped the gods for many years and finally Goddess Savitri gave the king the
gift of a daughter. She was named Savitri after the goddess. Savitri was so
beautiful and intelligent that no one dared to marry her. The king asked Savitri to
choose a suitable husband for herself.
Savitri traveled for many years until she reached a hermitage where many princes
lived as ascetics giving up their luxury, wealth and power. When Savitri entered
the hall of worship and paid respects to the eldest teacher, a young man entered the
hall, guiding an old, blind man. Savitri asked the teacher, "Who is he?" The teacher
replied, "He is prince Satyavan, a virtuous man, guiding his blind father who lost
his kingdom. Like his name, he is the emblem of truth." Savitri decided to marry
Satyavan.
When Savitri returned home, her father inquired. Savitri happily replied, "Father, I
have decided to marry Satyavan." But seeing Satyavan's horoscope, the astrologer
said, "Satyavan will die one year from today." The king was stunned to hear this
and requested Savitri to choose someone else. Savitri trembled and said, "But
father, I have already chosen Satyavan, and I will not choose another man. I will
share the precious one year with him only."
Soon the king rode with Savitri to the hermitage to formalize the proposal.
Satyavan was overjoyed to be offered such a bride. His father, the blind king,
asked, "Savitri you are a princess, can you bear the hard life of the hermitage,
For a year they lived happily. But Savitri could never forget that Satyavan's death
was drawing closer. Finally, when only three days remained, Savitri prayed for
three days and three nights. On the final day, she came out from the prayer room
with the rising sun. Satyavan wondered to himself, why Savitri was praying so
hard?
When Satyavan was ready to go out to collect wood for the fire, Savitri rushed to
his side and said, "I will come with you." "You look tired" said Satyavan " I will
return soon. You rest." But Savitri insisted on accompanying him.
In the woods, Satyavan suddenly felt dizzy while chopping the firewood and laid
down. Savitri raised his head on her lap watching Satyavan's face carefully.
Satyavan closed his eyes and began to breath slowly. Suddenly Lord Yama, the
god of death, arrived. He caught the soul of Satyavan with his noose and headed
towards his kingdom. Satyavan's body lay dead. Yama tried to console Savitri by
saying, "Satyavan was a man of great virtue and happiness awaits him in my
kingdom."
Savitri did not say anything but rose and started after Yama. Yama objected, "You
cannot follow me to the land of the dead!" Savitri replied, "Lord Yama. I know you
are doing your duty of taking away the soul of my husband when it is time. But my
duty as his wife is to stay beside him."
"Your duty is over with the death of your husband. I admire your loyalty. I will
grant you anything but the life of your husband." Savitri most respectfully asked
"I admire your devotion" Yama said, "But you have to bend to your faith. I will
grant you another wish except the life of your husband." "Give many children to
my father, I was his only child" said Savitri and Yama granted her wish. Then he
began to climb a steep hill. When Yama looked back he saw Savitri coming up the
steep hill, tired and exhausted.
"Savitri," Yama said in a loud voice "I forbid you to come farther. I am telling for
the last time you have come far enough. I admire your courage and your firmness. I
grant you one last favor, anything, but the life of your husband."
Savitri got her last chance, and said, "Lord, then grant me many children, and let
them be the children of Satyavan." Yama was surprised by Savitri's wit and strong
will, "You have not asked for your husband's life, yet I cannot grant your wish
without releasing Satyavan. You have won your husband's life."
Savitri found herself at the same spot where she took her dying husband's head on
her lap. Satyavan woke up and saw Savitri both crying and laughing. When asked
what happened, Savitri said, "My love, let us return home."
Savitri should have listened to his father and not mrry satyavan or accepted her
fate and destiny of losing her husband.she would have simply surrendered to her
father‟s will or to her fate. But Savitri made her own decision and stuck to it –
and was so determined to live life on her own terms by with courage
,determination and tenacity.
Also note the selflessness by asking to restore the father-in law‟s sight and
kingdom. and children for her father.
We should also build our emotional account by helping people wherever possible
without expecting any returns in our journey towards our goal.
A prince went upto Swami Rama Tirtha and put his question “O venerable sir, who
is God? Where is He? Please take me to God. I wish to see Him.”The Swami
answered “Dear prince, if you wish to see God I will have to tell Him who you are.
So please give me your visiting card.
When a man wants to see a high dignitary does he not send his card first? I will
place your card in the hands of God I am sure He will see you.” The prince thought
the request was quite reasonable, quite in order to cpmply with. So he took a piece
of paper and wrote his name “ Sri Gajpati Raju”. The Swami read it.
He returned the slip saying “This is your name . God will like to know your who
you are and not your name.” The prince took back the slip and wrote in another”
Prince of Vijayanagram”. Again the Swami remarked “ But that is your status”.
The confused prince wrote a third time” Administrator of VIjaynagram”. “ That is
your position ,” rejoined the Swami.
The prince thought, over deeply and wrote finally “Man”. “ No, that is your

The prince continued his investigation . “ Am I the mind? Or the intellect.” “No” ,
he contemplated. . ”It cannot be . They are also continually changing. They are all
mine. I am apart from my mind and intellect.”
The Swami then gently told him,” oh price you are your Self. You are not your
body ,mind or intellect…..”
The prince was astonished. He mediated and realized “ How sill I had been. I

The story is about a famous guru and his two disciples. Once their education was
complete, and they were ready to leave, the guru called one of them and asked, "
Now that your education is complete and it is time for you to leave and find your
own place in the world, what plans do you have for your future? " The disciple
said, " When I go into the world I will look for success and prosperity. "
With a smile, the guru gave him a bag full of gold coins, blessed him, and allowed
him to leave. Now the guru called the second disciple and put the same question
to him. He replied, " I will go into the world and achieve success and be
prosperous. " The guru gave him one silver coin, blessed him, and let him go.
There was a pedestrian resting a few yards away. After both the disciples had left
he went up to the guru and asked him why he gave a bag full of gold coins to the
man who was going to look for success and prosperity for himself, while he gave
only one silver coin to the man who wanted to achieve success on his own.
The guru smiled and replied, " the man who is going to look for success and
prosperity is unlikely to find it as he will be dependent on external forces for his
accomplishments. He will need this bag of gold; it will not last long with him. The
second man, he said, " is set to achieve success on his own, he will get it. He will
also be at peace with himself. He does not need gold from me; he will earn
enough for himself. I gave him one silver coin which is what he need for his bus

There was a couple who used to go to England to shop in the beautiful stores.
They both liked antiques and pottery and especially teacups. This was their
twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
One day in this beautiful shop they saw a beautiful teacup. They said, "May we see
that? We've never seen one quite so beautiful."
As the lady handed it to them, suddenly the teacup spoke. "You don't
understand," it said. "I haven't always been a teacup.
There was a time when I was red and I was clay. My master took me and rolled
me and patted me over and over and I yelled out, "let me alone", but he only
smiled, "Not yet."
"Then I was placed on a spinning wheel," the teacup said, "and suddenly I was
spun around and around and around. Stop it! I'm getting dizzy! I screamed. But
the master only nodded and said, 'Not yet.'
Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I wondered why he wanted to
burn me, and I yelled and knocked at the door. I could see him through the
opening and I could read his lips as He shook his head, 'Not yet.'
Finally the door opened, he put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. 'There, that's
better,' I said. And he brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I
thought I would gag. 'Stop it, stop it!' I cried. He only nodded, 'Not yet.'
Then I knew there wasn't any hope. I would never make it. I was ready to give up.
But the door opened and he took me out and placed me on the shelf. One hour
later he handed me a mirror and said, 'Look at yourself. And I did. I said, 'That's
not me; that couldn't be me. It's beautiful. I'm beautiful.'
'I want you to remember, then,' he said, 'I know it hurts to be rolled and patted,
but if I had left you alone, you'd have dried up. Iknow it made you dizzy to spin
around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled. I knew it
hurt and was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn't put you there, you
would have cracked.
I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all over, but if I
hadn't done that, you never would have hardened; you would not have had any
color in your life. And if I hadn't put you back in that second oven you wouldn't
survive for very long because the hardness would not have held. Now you are a
finished product. You are what I had in mind when I first began with you.

The great escape
Every evening Abhay would sit down to have his drink, but he would miss his
wife's company. He kept thinking of her. He kept visualizing her in the prayer
room, singing bhajans. Time and again he would wait for the hour to be over, so
that she would come and join him.
In the prayer room, Shivangi would play the Harmonium and sing for the Lord.
But, her thoughts would drift towards her husband. In her minds eye, she would
picture Abhay, taking one drink after the other. She prayed to the Lord, to change
her husband's habits. Months passed like this.
One night, Shivangi had a dream: Abhay and Shivangi were kneeling before the
Lord.God said: Shivangi, Abhay is more devoted to me than you.
Shivangi: Lord! How is that possible? I sing your glory, but he drinks all evening.
God: When you are physically in the prayer room, you are mentally drinking. You
think only of Abhay. "The drink is in you and you are in the drink."
But, when Abhay is drinking, he constantly thinks about prayer and bhajan. He
even mentally sings the songs he imagines you to be singing. "The prayer is in him
and he is in prayer."
God: No my child! It is only when you remember me from the core of your heart
that you can feel that "I am in you and you are in me." Prayer is talking to God.
The time you spend in 'prayer' is of no significance unless you are able to establish
the connection that makes you feel that, "God is in you, with you and around
you!"
"What counts is not the number of hours you put in, but how much you put in the
hours."
The young man had lost his job and didn't know which way to turn.
Pacing about the preacher's study, the young man ranted about his problem.
Finally he clenched his fist and shouted, "I've begged God to say something to
help me. Tell me, Preacher, why doesn't God answer?"
The old preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply -- something
so hushed it was indistinguishable.
The young man stepped across the room. "What did you say?" he asked.
The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the
young man moved closer until he was leaning on the preacher's chair. "Sorry," he
said. "I still didn't hear you."
One evening a Swamiji of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt was addressing the participants of
an MNC company on the concept of work culture.
One of the participants asked the following question to the Swamiji: I am a senior
manager of Materials Department and I joined an organization 25 years ago as an
Engineer Trainee and over the last 25 years I have gone through every experience
in the organization and I am now the senior manager looking after the material
function independently.
During the initial part of my career, the job was very challenging and interesting.
Every day was exciting and I looked forward to each day with lot of interest.
However, all those exciting days are gone since I do not find my job any more
interesting because there is nothing new in my job.
However, Swamiji, I am living in the same house for over forty years, I am the son
for the same parents for over forty five years, I am the father for the same
children for the past ten years and the husband for the same lady for the past
twenty years.
In these personal roles I do not feel bored and the passage of time has not taken
away the zeal from me. Please tell me why I am bored of the routine in the office
and not in the house?
He asked the executive the question: Please tell me for whom does your wife and
the mother of children cook ?
The executive replied that obviously my wife cooks for all of us -the family. Then
the Swamiji said that because the wife 'Serves' others and because of this service
mindedness, she is not feeling tired or bored. Similarly, when you are at Home
you are not perceiving your role as the necessary work.
Anything we consider, as service will not make us feel bored. That is difference
between Serving and Working.
He asked the executive to consider his work as service and not merely a work....
The day-long trek across the arid high plains had left them weary and
discouraged.
Certainly the elders could not be mistrusted. Their constant ramblings about the
man called Jambali filled the air almost daily.
Yet many had traveled to the eastern mountains in search of this man, and all had
returned weeks later with nothing to show but callused feet.
Was it all just a wistful tale; a fantasy concocted to give the people of their
desperately poor village a reason to hope?
The sun rose to find only four travelers remaining; the fifth having let doubt win
over.
His note by the ashes of the fire implored the four to push on,
but he had returned to the village, unable to pursue a journey that held no
promise.
And so the four travelers hiked throughout the morning and reached the tree line
of the eastern slopes by mid-day.
It was a welcome escape from the relentless heat of the desert sun.
They had not walked more than 100 yards beneath the shade of the trees, when
they happened across an old woman.
They told the woman of their quest to find a man called Jambali, and asked if she
knew where to find him. She exclaimed that they were indeed fortunate, for he
was a nomad and was camped for the day just over the next rise. She bid them
caution however, as he was not fond of unannounced strangers to his camp.
In this way they could best decide upon a method of entering the camp.
They elected a scout, and he ascended the rise while the others anxiously waited.
After a short time the scout returned looking forlorn and discouraged. He
announced to the others that he did not see the camp of a wealthy man, rather
was it the camp of a pauper.
And then this traveler did proclaim their journey a fool's adventure,
One was elected and he ascended the rise to scout the camp.
He shortly returned with a puzzling report. Not only was this man
He quickly fashioned a makeshift spear using a dry branch sharpened with his
hunting knife. He ran down the hill and jumped between the man and the snarling
tiger. He readied his weapon and was on the verge of thrusting it into the beast,
when the man suddenly let out a shrill whistle and grabbed the spear from the
traveler's hands.
The tiger abruptly ceased its attack, then trotted over to stand next to the man.
Obviously, a cruel trick had been played upon the traveler.
Distraught over what had just transpired, the traveler demanded an explanation.
The man explained that the old woman had seen the four travelers approaching
from the desert, and had warned him of their arrival.
He explained that his antics were designed to invite only the most sturdy of heart
into his camp. The man went on to introduce himself as Jambali the Wealth-Giver.
He invited the traveler to sit beside him and tell of his journey.
They were powerful words that sank deep into the traveler's heart.
Then, suddenly and without notice, the traveler rose to his feet
He was overwhelmed with exhilaration at the wisdom he had just received, and
could barely contain his desire to depart for the village with news of his good
fortune on this journey. He quickly bade Jambali farewell and promised he would
tell his people what he had learned.
And so, this traveler did declare the journey a success, and he trotted into the
desert with a glad heart.
As the traveler disappeared from sight, Jambali strode into his tent
which had swallowed the travelers, and dispensed his last bit of wisdom, "The
fifth traveler was ready to receive wealth and wisdom, and received only that
which he sought, yet no riches filled his pockets because he did not ask for them."
