Summary
Insightful, deliberative Senior Principal Scientist with extensive knowledge in
developing scientific programs, cheminformatic and computational chemistry tools
used in the pharmaceutical industry. These tools have impacted both local and g
lobal teams. Background includes developing several web-based tools. Used commer
cial tools and integrated them within internal computational environment. Am kno
wn for my ability to carefully indentify and weigh all options before making dec
isions, able to easily adapt to new situations and ensure project completion ben
efiting the organization and customer. Work well within a team or individually,
continuously strive to learn, apply, teach and develop successful solutions usin
g ingenious methods.
Professional Experience
Pfizer, Inc., St Louis, MO 2007 to Present
Senior Principal Scientist
* Using experience from developing local patent analysis tools, significantly co
ntributed to the Global Patent Analysis Tools team goal of developing and delive
ring several tools by the end of 2009 enabling scientists to more easily and qui
ckly get a better understanding of the IP space.
* As member of the Structural and Computational Chemistry group in PGRD St Louis
, developed innovative computational tools and procedures that enabled researche
s to test and evaluate drug candidates ensuring only the most desirable ones wou
ld be synthesized. Developed docking protocols, QSAR models, independently and i
n collaboration with computational chemists for use in Pfizeras compute infrastr
ucture, as well as lead generation or scaffold hoping tools that became part of
a set of global Lead Generation tools.
Pfizer, Inc., Ann Arbor, MI 2004 to 2007
Senior Principal Scientist
* As a member of a global team developing application to allow computational che
mists to build and publish QSAR models, implemented many of the statistical comp
onents used, helped define and develop the standards of the application's compon
ents, as well as worked with end-users ensuring the application met their needs
and was easy to use. This tool has been very well received by computational chem
ists within Discovery, PDM, and other groups becoming the preferred tool to deve
lop and deploys QSAR models.
* Served as leader of a global team that set the best practices and educating us
ers in the publication of computational models within Pfizer's internal computin
g environment. Responsibilities included organizing team, setting goals, objecti
ves, and holding monthly meetings. We successfully increased productivity of new
model publications and their use via Pfizeras various global desktop applicatio
ns.
* Key developer on a local Java application that bridged the computational biolo
gy and chemistry fields for use in evaluating targets drugability. Although we s
topped development of this application, the requirements, work-flows, and use ca
ses developed were incorporated into various global efforts.
Pfizer, Inc., Ann Arbor, MI 2001 to 2004
Research Associate
* As a member of global team developing a molecular visualization application, s
et the specifications for accessing and running computational models published o
n Pfizer's computational servers, defined and wrote the User Help documentation
used within the application, as well as involved in developing and giving traini
ng classes on using the application. Also employed Contextual Inquiry and Use Te
sting expertise to the application design which has allowed users to work more e
fficiently with the application.
* Using my knowledge and expertise in developing computational models/tools, wor
ked on a global team to define standards for Pfizer's global computational serve
rs. Because of this, it allowed a smooth transfer of all models from the local A
nn Arbor environment to the global computational environment enabling the retire
ment of several applications, free up local resources and eliminate duplication
of effort saving the company money.
* As a team member to streamline in vitro measurements of ADME/Tox properties, l
ead the development and implementation of a web-based application to calculate i
n silico ADME/Tox and other properties. The application was well received and us
ed not only by team members, but by all scientists at the Ann Arbor laboratories
and several other Pfizer research sites. Many of the best practices established
in this application were incorporated into newer Pfizer tools.
* Key member of the team that formed the BioImaging Center at Pfizer, Inc.. Base
d on my experience in using micro-CT to study the structural-mechanical properti
es of bone and strong computer background, defined the specifications for micro-
CT usage and computer-network requirements of the Center.
Warner Lambert, Ann Arbor, MI 1997 to 2001
Senior Scientist
* Lead developer of web based tools which allowed computational chemists to post
alignment, pharmacophore, or docking models to a computational application serv
er. Medical chemists on numerous projects used these tools and models to save ti
me by testing hypotheses and/or assessing how well their ideas for ligands might
bind to a target before actually synthesizing them. Several compounds were nomi
nated for further development as a direct result of ligands modeled utilizing th
ese tools.
* Coordinated efforts with Tripos, Inc. to conduct Contextual Inquiry/Use Testin
g studies to improve our local web-tools as well as their molecular visualizatio
n program used by the tools. This effort resulted in much easier and well receiv
ed web-tools by Ann Arbor colleagues; and enabled the vendor to produce a much m
ore marketable visualization tool.
Warner Lambert, Ann Arbor, MI 1996 to 1997
Senior Systems Programmer
* Collaborated with the Informatics group to develop, setup, and implement autom
atic procedures to calculate several in silico PK/physiochemical properties whic
h were loaded into the global corporate database; and to automatically update lo
cal copies of the corporate chemical structure database (in 2D and 3D formats) f
or use by Ann Arbor computational chemists in their analyses. These procedures
were later adopted by Pfizer in newer database systems.
Warner Lambert, Ann Arbor, MI 1995 to 1996
Systems Programmer
* Maintained and directed system administration for CADD computing environment,
developed proposals/budgets for maintenance and future enhancements of CADD comp
uting environment, installation of scientific software, coordinated licensing an
d software installation with vendors, and evaluated and recommended new software
for the group.
* Acted as liaison between CADD group and Ann Arbor Data Center (AADC) for compu
ter or networking issues.
* Setup, maintained and served as webmaster for Ann Arbor CADD intranet website.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 1993-1995
Postdoctoral Fellow at the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories, Dept. of Orthopaed
ic Surgery
* Developed software upgrades for specific segments controlling the micro-comput
ed tomography (cone beam scanner developed by Dr. Lee Feldkamp) system in the La
boratory, and improved elements of the associated image reconstruction and analy
ses algorithms. Taught members of the Orthopaedic Research Labs how to operate
the micro-CT scanner, and worked with them to develop protocols for scanning and
analyzing specimens for their projects.
* Research included the evaluation of a canine osteoarthritis model, the determi
nation of structural and mechanical properties of cortical bone in a transgeneti
c mouse model, failure characterization of vertebral trabecular bone, and the as
sessment of structural and mechanical properties differences due to donor age in
human vertebral trabecular tissue.
