More than
just a vision

A model with a future
When IDS Scheer was founded in
1984 as a spin-off from the Institut für
Wirtschaftsinformatik (Institute for
Information Systems), the academic,
current supervisory board chairman
and Chief Technology Advisor, Prof. Dr.
August Wilhelm Scheer was following
a vision that was exceptional at that
time:
“I wanted to incorporate the results
of my research in real products and
expose them to the most rigorous
testing, to prove that they can with-
stand the test of the market.”
The results of Dr. Scheer’s research
re-presented a convincing and high-
ly profitable business model, which
is proven by the fact that our company
has recorded a net profit and above-
average growth rates for every year of
its existence.
Back in the early 80ies, Professor
Scheer had developed the Y Model
to describe the integration paths of
business information systems. The
model – the basis for the IDS Scheer
logo is still valid today: It symbolizes
the integrative process view, without
which Business Process Excellence
would not be possible.
Dr. Scheer’s scientifically substantia-
ted method of ARIS – ARchitecture
of integrated Information Systems –
for describing a business structural
and procedural organization has set
international standards.
Today, the holistic approach of the
ARIS method has become a de-facto
industry norm. It is an element of the
entire IDS Scheer Portfolio from ARIS
products to BPM consulting and soft-
ware implementation. The metho-
dology is constantly augmented with
content procedure models and best
practices. This shortens project times
and boosts project quality.
The successful linking of visionary con-
cepts and concrete business concepts
formed the basis for the IDS Scheer
IPO in 1999; now the company has
approximately 2, 800 employees and an
international network of subsidiaries
and partners in more than 70 countries.

That the process concept is becoming

even more firmly established, as seen
in the agreement signed with SAP
in 2003: The ARIS Process Platform
and SAP NetWeaver have merged –
making ARIS methods and tools a key
component of the open application
platform.
For the successful transformation of
the research idea into a product, Dr.
Scheer was the first economist to be
awarded the Philip Morris Research
Prize. In October 2003, in “recognition
of his outstanding entrepreneurship,”
he was voted entrepreneur of the
year in the Information Technology
category. The title honors the foun-
ding of “one of the most successful
German IT services and software
company”. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer Dr. Scheer calls for more entrepre-

world. He believes that innovation
should be understood as the com-
mercially successful implementation
of new ideas, and research and deve-
lopment in particular should be focu-
sed more on the market and made
more efficient.
Professor Scheer also represents this
idea on the board of the BITKOM,
Federal Association for Information,
Telecommunications and New Media
onto which he was voted in 2004, as
well as in the Senate of the renowned
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, of which he
has also been a member since 2004.
Since January 2005, IDS Scheer has
also been listed on the German Entre-
preneurial Index, GEX, an indicator
for the stock performance of owner-
controlled, medium-sized enterprises.

Business Architect and ARIS Business
Designer are available (among other
solutions) for professional application.
The analysis functions are rounded out
with flexible solutions for reporting and
the dynamic identification of staff and
IT-based resource utilization. In the
product family, ARIS Toolset is the

ARIS Implementation
Platform
ARIS Implementation Platform sup-
ports the continuous integration of

Oriented Architecture (SOA) and the

ARIS for SAP NetWeaver, another
