TIEMPO LIBRE
Three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo
Libre brings the rich traditions of Cuban
music to the modern sounds of today.
Celebrated for their dance-inducing
performances, the first authentic all-
Cuban timba band in the United States
blends high voltage Latin jazz with the
seductive rhythms of son. Classically
trained at La ENA, Cuba’s premiere
conservatory, the Miami-based band
members have inherited the rich tradi-
tion of the music of their native Cuba.
The group’s latest CD, Bach in Havana,
honors the baroque master’s influence
on their conservatory days, fusing Bach
melodies with Afro Cuban rhythms.

Stunning keyboard virtuoso Hiromi
Uehara took the jazz world by storm
with her 2003 debut, Another Mind.
Mentored by keyboard giants like
Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea, she has
a unique musical world-view and dynamic
piano style. Her influences are endless.
“I love Bach, I love Oscar Peterson, I
love Franz Liszt, I love Ahmad Jamal,”
she says. “I also love people like Sly and
the Family Stone, Dream Theatre, and
King Crimson. Also, I’m so much inspired
by sports players like Carl Lewis and
Michael Jordan. Basically, I’m inspired
by anyone who has big, big energy. They
really come straight to my heart.” While
she has wowed audiences in past years
with her trio and quartet performances,

‘S WONDERFUL

The new Gershwin musical, ‘S WONDERFUL,

is an all singing, all dancing, musical revue
that celebrates the genius of George and
Ira Gershwin. Incorporating 5 mini-musicals
inspired by the real events occurring in and
around the lives of the Gershwin brothers,
this new musical theater extravaganza
illustrates their impact on the world then and
now. New York City in 1916. Paris in the
30’s. Hollywood of the 40’s. New Orleans
in the 50’s. And somewhere in the world
today. ‘S WONDERFUL takes you on a ride
to the different places, times, and musical
styles that make the Gershwin brothers the
most successful songwriting team in the
history of popular music. Like a technicolor

THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET

ROMEO AND JULIET, Chopiniana

The Russian National Ballet offers a double delight.

The evening will open with Michail Fokine’s 1907
timeless poetic example of stylization, Chopiniana,
a one-act ballet also known as Les Sylphides,
danced to the romantic music of Chopin. The work
is saturated with universal significance and has
become standard repertoire of the world’s leading
theatres. It is not the characters in the ballet that
develop, but rather the themes, moods and feelings.

In the second half of the evening, the company will

perform Romeo and Juliet. The full-length Shake-
spearean tragedy will feature Tchaikovsky’s music
and Yuri Vetrov’s restaging of the original chore-
ography by Petipa. Director Elena Radchenko, the
legendary former Bolshoi Principal Dancer, is the

THE HOUSE JACKS

A rock band without instruments,
the House Jacks’ “no-holds-barred”
a cappella style obliterates traditional
preconceptions about the limits of the
human voice. Deke Sharon, Roo Ahuja,
Wes Carroll, Troy Horne and Austin
Willacy run the gamut from tender love
ballads to mile-a-minute funk, complete
with mind-blowing vocal percussion
and riffs that you would swear were
torn straight out of a whammy-bar
guitar. Taking their name from the
Heavy Equipment section of the Yellow
Pages (a “house jack” is what you
use to move a residence), the Jacks
originally got to know each other on
the collegiate a cappella circuit of the
late 1980s. The group has completed

PUNCH BROTHERS

As the San Francisco Chronicle asks,

“Why didn’t someone think about mix-
ing bluegrass, jazz and classical music
together sooner? Chris Thile...is doing
it with his new outfit, Punch Brothers,
and the result is totally mind-blowing.”
Formed in 2006, the five young and
fiercely talented musicians called Punch
Brothers are led by mandolin virtuoso,
Chris Thile and are already playing to
sold-out crowds around the world. The
band - whose name is taken from the
Mark Twain short story, “Punch, Brothers,

young pickers for a fresh, cutting-edge
sound that seamlessly blends bluegrass
traditions with breathtaking innovation.

RUTHIE FOSTER

Texas singer, guitarist, songwriter and rising star

Ruthie Foster has been compared to both Aretha
Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald (among other great
singers), but Foster’s vocal sound is her own, a
rich and rootsy blend of blues, folk and gospel
music with some old soul, acoustic jazz and R&B
thrown in for seasoning. Foster has appeared on
Austin City Limits, toured England and Europe and
performed at such major music festivals as the
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Merlefest,
Vancouver Folk Festival and Kerrville Folk Festival,
winning devoted fans and glowing reviews at every
step. The Austin Chronicle noted that “Foster’s
deeply soulful vocals dip into gospel and swing
toward contemporary folk with R&B panache.
When she sings a cappella, the heavens part.”
Foster has recorded six albums: Full Circle,
Crossover, Runaway Soul, Stages, The Phenomenal

TIME FOR THREE

A self-described jam band which draws
heavily on classical and folk influences,
Time for Three was formed in 2002 by
three students attending Philadelphia’s
Curtis Institute of Music. The group is
composed of two violinists (Zachary De Pue
and Nicolas Kendall) and a double-bassist
(Ranaan Meyer), all of whom have a taste
for improvisational jazz. Despite its small
size, the band has an uncanny ability to
re-create well-known orchestral standards,
with seemingly flawless arrangements. It
sports a repertoire that includes a diverse
list of classics, a few pop songs (the most
well-known of which is a rendition of Imogen
Heap’s “Hide and Seek”), and original
