This Manual was made for Mac os X 10.4.x PeerGuardian Users but it will also Help 10.5.

x and 10.6.x Users.

I've included some extra information in this Manual about other Applications to help keep you Mac safe from online threats.

Ok first thing is to Explain Peerguardian os X . it's an IP filter. PeeGuardian and can be configured in some nice ways but it takes a little work.

Step One - Geting a Secure Copy of PeerGuardian os X. This is realy important because you want the official version no one messed with
you need to go to http://phoenixlabs.org/ you will see it on the Right side of the screen on top the links for downloading also check out there
Forum http://forums.phoenixlabs.org/ it's very helpful and free. this is open source programming. there is a source code and it's free to download
this is why you should get the application form the official web page and nowhere else. to prevent downloading a bad altered copy.

This Manuel covers PeegGuardian os X. I will also help to Downlaod an Application called Growl for os X http://growl.info/ it allows PeerGuardian to Make
Popups. You will need to Install them both because the Growl popups can be clicked on to allow connections with PeerGuardian. If you need to quickly
UnBlock a IP Address. you can also make an allow list for PeerGuardian. these are needed to UnBlock an IP Adderss that's in a Blocklist. say you need to
go to a page and it's one IP address. the Blocklist may have 200,000,000 blocked IP's in the list your Useing. you do not need to Disable the whole Blocklist
to get to one IP Address Just Simply Make an Allow List. I will show how all this is done.

Ok Download and install PeerGuardian os X for your Apple Operating System. Now you need Growl Installed to work with Pg os X . when there both installed
Growl Will Allow PG to Make Popups on the screen and PG has a Default set of Blocklist that are installed when you Install PG there already setup. You can just
use them if you want to or add more blocklistlist if you Wish. you need a place to get blocklist from like iblocklist.org - http://www.iblocklist.com/lists.php or maybe
you like http://www.bluetack.co.uk although most of those list are in iBlocklist.org hosted there also. it's your choice.

For Adding PG to your Menu Bar at the top of the screen - If it dose not install the right way. This was a bug in 10.4.x with PG 1.5.1 it's easy to fix

Open the Applications folder and your System Preferences for your Mac. Go to Accounts then go to Login Items you need to make sure there are 3 files there

pploader
pplogger
pgagent

They should start on startup when your computer starts. the pgagent is the one that puts PG in your Menu Bar.

If there not there you need to Right Click on the PeerGuardian Appliction go to Show Package Content click it go into the Content folder now go into the
Resources folder you will see pploader, pplogger and pgagent make sure there in the Login Items and Restart,. when your system restarts you will see a PG in
the menu bar up top. the menu should look like this

The PG Application can be launched from the Menu bar.

Enable Filters and Disable Filters will turn all the blocklist on / off with one click.

One nice Option is to click the list name to quickly turn it off and on.
This is a nice feature also if you turn a list off check it here in the PeerGuardian Statistics

Growl also had a bug and would not stay in the Menu Bar

Here is how i fixed that. you need to go into /Library/PreferencePanes/Growl.prefPane/Contents/Resources/GrowlMenu.app and use Show Package Content
this is not in the Users / Home folder the Library folder just click on your startup drive you will see it. add GrowlMenu to the Login Items and it will be in the Menubar
this was another bug i found in 10.4.x seems Growl had the option in it's settings but it didn't work right for me so I fixed it like the PG menu bug.
To Add Extra Blocklist - You need to open PeerGuardian go to the Menu Bar to File then to List Manager you will see a window like this.

The Allow List i created is at the Bottom. This Manual also teach you how to create list for use with PG.

Now Click the bank line under the Allow List so nothing is highlighted and click Add

You will not get this Window

Description is the List Name. we will use Primeary Threats

URL is the Web Page like http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=ijfqtofzixtwayqovmxn

That address from iBlocklist.org address is for Primary Threats Bad IP Addresses that are no good to connect to.
I would set it to Active only. this means it will use the list and block all the IP's in that list.

It should look like this now just click Add and your Blocking Primeary Threats with the blocklist from http://www.iblocklist.com/lists.php

- Allow Standard - should allow you to use your Web Browser ( port 80 ) with the blocklist running if it's checked but I have never used it before.1
Im not sure if it opens other ports. You Should Always Have The Mac os X Default Firewall Running. PG IS NOT A FIREWALL IT IS A IP Filter.
Makeing Your Own Allow List

Notice my Allow List everything is Checked. I will need it to Allow All IP Addresses in my Allow List and to Allow All Standard Ports For Those IP's

The Allow List Im Useing Is On Personal Web Space Most Service Providers Will Give So Many MB like 10mb Per eMail Account. the File for he Allow List
is tiny this file and compressed it cam be .zip format i use .gz G-Zip format myself and host it from my own web space. never give out the address to it the
reason i say never give people the address or filename is so no one but you need to now where it is and no one else has access to it. this prevents others
from trying to edit or change your file.

To make the file format PG uses a format of its own. It's not so easy to make on a Mac so we do as we need to Download a blocklist file from iBlocklist of any
where then rename the file delete all the IP's in the list fire up BB Edit if you have it for Mac os then Text Edit should work also. you need a blank file but never
change the format it needs to be the same format that is used on PG like a PC Plain Text Format. here is what I did and it worked for me there is a method to
it and it will display in PG Log window and the Growl Popups on your desktop also it gives you info.

Apple Dashboard Allow:17.254.32.16-17.254.32.16

I'll Explain Apple Dashboard Allow: i used this to make PeerGuardian display Application it is and you need the : no space before or after. then add the IP
this can be done 2 ways. 17.254.32.16-17.254.32.16 this is 1 IP address only. It dose need the ( - ) with no spaces it's how the application works needs to be
this way but f i wanted to add more IP than one. I would do this 17.254.32.16-17.254.32.18 this is now 17.254.32.16 and 17.254.32.17 and 17.254.32.18
It's a range of IP Addresses if yo take appart a list and look at it you will see how they are made you could make a Allowlist or a Blocklist of your own.

if I use the dshileld blocklist I need to allow DShield Update Allow:69.124.137.216-69.124.137.216 and DShield Apple Allow:17.151.16.20-17.151.16.20

If I need to connect to a IP Address this dshield blocklist was blocking from updateing and stopping me from useing. or if i need to use or an application to connect to the
internet and the dshield list was blocking the IP. then I needed to Allow it in my Allowlist. this can take some time to do here's how i did it. Open Peerguardian os X on
startup and open the application before the list load quickly. they auto load beacouse you have it running on startup it's in the Login Items. what you neen to do is to..
launch PeerGuardian from the Dock Right away and open PeerGuardian Log its in the menu bar when you start the application and then click on File then Log you will
see this window.

The Red Text Means it's Blocking this IP. What List Is Blocking the IP is Not Important. If you need to go there you can Make your Allow List
One Allow List will work to unblock a locked IP addresses in any of the list. even if there are 10 Blocklist being used.

The easy way to make a list is to downlaod a List and highlight all the text in it and then erase it and use it that way.
This file was bt_level1 form iBlocklist.org a.k.a Level 1 list and heres how you get your Allow List your going to notice that this file online is named
bt_level1.gz it's compresses G-Zip you could use .zip if you wanted Pg wil read it

open it and Highlight and Delete everything in it then add your IP Addresses you want to Allow in this List. then save the list do not change
the name in the text editor saveing it as is with the same name then changeing the filename will not change the format afterwards. save the
file. the file is in a folder or on your desktop just click on the filename and rename it don't change the extension it mey be hidden on a Mac
the file extension anyway. I renamed this file to Allowlist

Here is an example of an Allow List

ok now to compress the file back to .gz or to .zip it's your choice os X has " Create Archive Of " if yo right click on the file and this will Make it a .zip file
now upload it to whatever Private Web Space you have. compressed to my allow list is 4 KB it's only a frew IP Addresses that's like nothing at all.
only a fraction of 1 MB. You need the URL for the file to use the List say you have Verizon it may be like below. it's not hard to find the URL.
You should be able to look at your web space and see the file you Uploaded right click it then open in a new window you will have the URL

http://webspace/verizon/user/allowlist.gz

To Make it Work you just need to add it to the list manager in PG

PG will Automaticly Download your Allow List every time it Updates about every 12 or 24 hours along with all the others List you are useing.
the application is made to download and relaod the list to be sure there up to date. some may seem like there not updating every day.
it is not because there blocked.it may be the list has no new IP's added and has not changed in a week or so it only updates the list file
when there are new list to replace the older one. it's smart to check if one list is blocking another you may notice it watching Growl popups
an address being block as soon as you startup. you could try to allow for a few minutes to see if other list update if they do get the Ip and
add it to your Allowlist go to your web space and delete the old file and replace it with a new version of your Allowlist.
To use Growl popup allowing you need to first make .p2b file for it it's not hard to do here is how

open list manager click add like you adding a list and then give it a name like example : allow list offline
then click Choose FIle it will create you a list file format is .p2b make sure all options are on active

- Allow - All Ranges - and - Allow Standard Ranges -

This will come out as a file MyList.p2b you can change the name when saveing it the default should put it in your documents folder

Useing Growl popups with PG

This is a basic default popup from Growl

if you click on it you will get a window like this

it's setup in PG to allow 10 min it can be changed quickly

for a Permanent Allow Choose it

This way with Growl may be simpler to do. but it's also Important to know how these List work and how to Create one.
To Remove A List You Need To

click on edit for that list uncheck the boxed

- Allow - All Ranges - and - Allow Standard Ranges -

Then just Click the Remove Button in the Peer Guardian List Manager Window

ClamXav - The Free Antivirus for Mac os X

Have a Look at this Antivirus if you already use it here is IP Address you will need to unblock for Freshclam Antivirus Definition Updater for ClamXav

Little Snitch - Another Great Security Application. Not free though about $25 and more than worth it.

Open any Application and if it connects to the internet Little Snitch wants to know if it's Ok to Allow it to happen or to Stop it from Connecting
This Application Allows for better security control and keeps anything from connecting to the internet that dose not belong doing so Little Snitch
Runs on Rules there is a Interface. it lets you setup rules for every application in your computer and it comes with some pre settings but you can
change any rule you want delete rules and for only $25 it's most likely the best pice of software you will even but.

This is a Little Snitch Popup

The Software for PG os X and Growl Function along with Mac os X Default Firewall running and has no conflict with Little Snitch
