Remote controlled sophisticated electronic code lock

ABSTRACT
Locking up valuables is a common practice to protect from them from
thieves. Here’s a sophisticated electronic code lock using DTMF (Dual-tone
multi-frequency) signalling technique. The DTMF signalling technique
improves signal readability even in a noisy environment. This code lock has
following features:

1) The 12 digit keypad is used for inputting the code.

2) The code here comprises of only two digits. For greater security, the
circuit can be modified up to nine digits
3) The operator gets only two chances to input the code for opening the
lock.
4) Two separate relays are provided. One for opening and other for closing
the lock.

We provide separate thumb wheel switches for setting the password in

latches. When the user enter his password it is compared with the code of
latches, when both are same the relays are activated. Two separate relays are
provided one for opening the lock and other for closing the lock. In case number
entered via keypad and thumb wheel switches don’t match ,pressing that very
key would advance a counter to decrease that allowed maximum chances for
inputing the correct code. Once the maximum number of attempt is over the
chance counter disable the system.

REMOTE-CONTROLLED SOPHISTICATED ELECTRONIC

CODE LOCK
PRINCIPLE

When you press any key on the DTMF encoder, a DTMF signal is
generated, which is first converted into a 4-bit equivalent binary number by the
DTMF decoder and then stored in a latch. The two numbers generated due to
pressing of two keys in sequence are stored in two different latches. The two
latched numbers as a whole form the higher and lower nibbles of an 8-bit
number. Telephone tone or pulse dialler IC UM91215B is used for generating
DTMF signals. it is the algebraic sum of two different audio frequencies.

The DTMF signals generated due to pressing of different keys

modulate the infra red rays generated by the IR LED. The frequencies

associated with various keys on the key pad are given below.

The Darlington phototransistor receives the modulated IR rays from

IR LED, it converts IR pulse into the equivalent electrical signals and couple the
same to DTMF decoder. The decoded data is latched into the ICs 7475. The
latched data is then goes to BCD to 7 segment decoder-cum-driver. The
decoded data is then displayed on the 7 segmented displays.

The data is also given to two 4 bit magnitude comparators the

resulting number is compared with another 8-bit number (code) applied to
comparator through two thumbwheel switches. If two numbers match, the result
of comparison is logic 1, which would allow the operator to switch on a relay by
pressing a particular key from the keypad. The relay contacts would then
activate a motor or a solenoid to open/close the door.

In case the number entered via keypad and thumbwheel switch

doesn’t match, pressing that very key would only advance a counter to decrease
the allowed number of maximum chances for inputting the correct code. Once
the maximum number of allowed attempts is over, the chance counter disables
the input system. So pressing any key doesn’t have any effect over the relays
used for opening and closing the lock until and unless the chance counter is
reset and correct code is entered via keypad.
