* B. Sc. Rider College, Lawrenceville, NJ, Chemistry
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
BIOSCIENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
* University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, Research Scientist, 2009-2010
Utilized IEF, mass spectrometry, and other methods to isolate and obtain se
quence information on fungal proteins potentially capable of degrading lignins;
identified families of enzymes with possible similar lignin-degrading activity t
hrough NCBI and other databases; correlated sequence information on these enzyme
s via BLAST; tested some enzymes on model substrates; obtained information on po
ssible mechanisms of these enzymes via TLC, difference spectroscopy, mass spectr
ometry, and other means.
* Chronomed, San Carlos, CA, Scientific Consultant, 2007-2009
Developed new synthetic techniques to extend the life of affinity resins to
detect diabetes by a point-of-care format.
* Cytobiologics, Half Moon Bay, CA, Research Associate, 2005
Cultured mouse cells to make monoclonal antibodies; purified them by affini
ty chromatography using protein A or specific antigens; made a purer product.
* Geronova, Fairfax, CA, Scientific Consultant, 2005
Developed new and more sensitive methods to measure lipoic acid, a naturally
occurring compound useful in treating diabetes, in product samples and in plasm
a by a variety of HPLC and fluorescence methods measured kinetics and dynamics o
f metabolism of lipoic acid in vivo.
* Chronomed, San Carlos, CA, Scientific Consultant, 2002-2004
Developed new procedures to make affinity resins to detect diabetes
by a point-of-care instrument or by HPLC.
* University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, Research Scientist, 2002
Studied the biodegradation of lignins by white rot fungus; isolated and
investigated proteins that may degrade lignins to liberate cellulose for
conversion to biofuels; obtained sequence information on these proteins
by mass spectrometry to design a PCR probe.
* RxQuest, San Mateo, CA, Scientist, Co-founder, and CSO, 1996-2001
Conceived and designed the chemistry and complete plans for a portable,
self-contained biomedical analyzer to simultaneously measure multiple
proteins, metabolites, or other molecules in blood, plasma, other biological
fluids, or air; used HTP methods in optimizing assays.
OTHER CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
* Developed methods to separate fetal erythrocytes from maternal circulation
for cytogenetic analysis for early determination of genetic abnormalities; made
a better product.
* Investigated ferulic acid, a natural alternative to anabolic steroids; devi
sed new synthetic methods; demonstrated safety and effectiveness of the product.
* Fabricated antibody-dependent, permeablized glass microelectrodes to develo
p an electroimmunoassay for antigens, metabolites, and other compounds; correlat
ed results with those of ELISA and other methods.
* Managed a team to develop new ways to synthesize purer and less expensive o
rganogermanium nutritional supplements; investigated the use of biotechnology to
produce these compounds; used XRF, FT NMR, and other methods to ascertain purit
y; instituted QC, GLP, and GMP; increased total sales 120%.
