The Diary of Anne Frank: Study Notes

Movie Notes
For her 13th birthday, Anne receives a diary, which she calls "Kitty".
Margot Frank is a good student, but Anne Frank would rather read books.
Many people think that the Frank family is now living in Switzerland.
Anne shares a room with Mr. Dussel, the last person to arrive at the Secret Annex.
Mr. Frank's company sells spices.
Meip takes notes from Mr. Dussel to his fiancé, which puts everyone in danger of being caught.
Mr. Dussel and Anne take turns using the desk, and are not happy about it.
Those living in the annex get news of the outside from the radio.
Mr. van Daan thinks that young ladies should not spend too much time reading books.
Mr. Dussel agrees to give Anne more time at the desk, but only out of respect for Mr. Frank.
Only 4 of Anne's classmates are still there.
Margot studies a lot because it's the 'only way she can survive.'
Peter's job is to bolt the doors each night and unbolt them every morning.
Anne and Peter are spending more and more time together.
Mr. Kraler had to break a window to get into the warehouse downstairs because the door wasn't unlocked.
Anne tells Peter that she used to be the class clown, but is different now.
Mrs. Frank is concerned that Anne will hurt Peter's feelings.
Anne tells Mrs. Frank she will do a better job than her parents have done.
Mr. Frank is concerned because Anne is getting behind in her studies.
Anne writes a hurtful note to Mr. Frank saying "I'm an independent person now."
Outside things have gotten worse. Anne says, "The Dutch have turned into a nation of robbers."
Security tightens after thieves break into the warehouse. During the week, Mr. Frank can no longer go downstairs.
Mr. Kraler has had to take away the radio because the authorities are confiscating them.
D-Day finally comes and Mrs. Frank says, "Dear God, we're saved."
Anne wants to be a writer, and she feels that Peter doesn't understand her.
Margot feels that she has to always keep the peace.
Mr. Frank keeps track of the progress of the Allies with pins on a map.
Anne writes that, "in spite of everything, people are good at heart," in one of her last diary entries.
The families have been hiding in the annex for 2 years.
Mr. Frank was a lieutenant in the German army.
Meip discovers Anne's diary and papers after everyone is gone, and gives them to Mr. Frank after the war.

Time Line
1929 — June 12th: Anne Frank is born in Frankfurt, Germany.
1933 — The Frank family moves to Amsterdam in the Netherlands because of increasing tensions in Germany.
1940 — Germany invades Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
1942 — Anne receives a diary for her 13th birthday.
1942 — The Frank family, Van Daan family and Mr. Dussel go into hiding in the “Secret Annex”.
1944 — The invasion of Normandy, or D-Day, begins.
1944 — August 4th: Anne Frank and the other residents of the Secret Annex are arrested by the police.
1944 — September 3rd: The Frank family and their friends are deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
1945 — March: Anne and Margot Frank die in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
1945 — May: Germany surrenders. The war in Europe is over.
1945 — June: Otto Frank returns to the Netherlands. He later learns the fate of his family and reads Anne’s diary.
1947 — Anne’s diary is published in Amsterdam.
1952 — The Diary of a Young Girl is published in the U.S.
