Symantec Veritas NetBackup (tm) Enterprise Server and Server 6.5 Hardware
Compatibility List
Introduction
This Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) document contains information for Symantec Veritas NetBackup Enterprise Server and Server 6.5. It is divided into sections
on the left that can be expanded. Tape libraries, tape drives, and virtual tape devices must be present on the HCL for support. Fibre-channel devices in the
Infrastructure Used for Testing section represent what has been tested in Symantec labs, or in Symantec-supervised partner labs, but is not intended to be a
complete list of supported devices. Refer to the iSCSI Environments section when implementing an iSCSI storage area network. It is recommended to use the exact
combination of components listed in each configuration.
Qualified hardware in this document is tested through the Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP). If you would like to have hardware considered for
inclusion on this HCL, please contact your hardware partner to ensure they are a member of STEP and have submitted a request to have their product qualified with
NetBackup.
New device support in NetBackup is accomplished through the use of a device mappings file. The latest version of this file is included in NetBackup patches and is
also available to download independently on the Symantec support site. This file is updated whenever new device support is needed independent of NetBackup
patches. It can be downloaded at <http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/289062 >for Linux/UNIX and <http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/289053 >for Windows.

SharedDisk Arrays
The SharedDisk array support information is listed below. This information is organized by vendor and provides information on the level of interface software (CLI)
tested, and what Operating Systems are supported by the disk array.
Please Note:
1. The disk arrays listed in this section have been qualified with the NetBackup SharedDisk feature. SharedDisk arrays are used by NetBackup as a backup
destination. This list does not apply to NetBackup SnapShot Client array support where a disk array is a backup data source.
2. The Interface Software (CLI) that is listed for each array family is the version(s) that have been tested within Symantec labs or Symantec-supervised partner labs.
It is the recommended level(s) of interface software for each array. Newer or older versions of the interface software may not be compatible with SharedDisk in
which case an upgrade (or downgrade) to a version listed in the following tables would be needed.
3. The firmware and Interface Software (CLI) are usually distributed in matching versions. Newer firmware however is often backwards compatible allowing older
levels of CLI to run with the newer firmware. It is recommended that these versions be matched when possible as most disk array vendors also suggest.
4. Where support is shown for "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition" it is implied that DataCenter and Standard edition are also supported.
5. To ensure support, all disk arrays in this section must be combined with interconnect hardware that is supported by the disk array manufacturer, and the
Operating System vendor. Refer to the respective vendors for this support information.
1. Please refer to the Veritas Storage Foundation Hardware Compatability List for support of Storage Foundation with various disk arrays. This list must be matched
with the SharedDisk Array tables below to determine support when using both NetBackup and Storage Foundation. NetBackup SharedDisk has a minimum
requirement of Storage Foundation 5.0 MP1 with RP2 on Solaris.
2. When installing and configuring HBA drivers it is recommended that the array vendor qualified HBA drivers be used opposed to the general HBA drivers that are
released for each operating system. These array vendor qualified HBA drivers are usually found in a separate section of the HBA vendor or array vendors website
where they are separated by array model. This is opposed to using the general HBA drivers that are separated on the website by selecting an operating system.
4. Sun StorEdge SAN Foundation 4.4.9 HBA (Leadville) drivers on Solaris are the minimum level for compatability with SharedDisk. For details see Sun Alert ID
102130.
5. Qlogic 2Gb FC HBA drivers on Solaris require a minimum level of 4.22 in the 4.x series and 5.03 in the 5.x series.
Multipath Software
The NetBackup SharedDisk feature must be presented with a single device path for any mutlipath volumes. The following multipath software has been tested to
verify functionality in consolidating multiple hardware paths to an array into a single software path that is compatible with SharedDisk.
-Solaris MPxIO
Third-Party Solutions:
-EMC PowerPath for Windows 4.6 and EMC PowerPath for Solaris 5.0 or higher
-Veritas Dynamic Multipathing (as part of Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 MP1 RP2) or higher

1. The EMC CLARiiON CX series refers to both the CX3 UltraScale and the CX Series.
2. The EMC CLARiiON CX series requires that EMC Navisphere Secure CLI be installed on each NetBackup Media Server. The EMC Navisphere Classic and Java CLI releases are not compatible with
NetBackup SharedDisk. Navisphere release 6.19 is the absolute minimum version required for NetBackup SharedDisk since it was the first package to include the secure version of the CLI.
3. The EMC Symmetrix DMX series requires the EMC Solutions Enabler Package that includes both SYMCLI and SYMAPI to be installed on each NetBackup Media Server.

System Storage N series ONTAP 7.1, ONTAP 7.2 9.0, 10 Enterprise Edition, Enterprise Edition (x64)
1. The IBM System Storage DS6000 series requires that IBM DS CLI be installed on each NetBackup Media Server.
Network Appliance
FAS series [1] ONTAP 7.1 9.0, 10 Enterprise Edition, Enterprise Edition (x64)
1. Network Appliance requires Data ONTAP Release 7.1 or higher for NetBackup SharedDisk. Earlier versions will not function.
Please Note:
1. The virtual tape device software listed in this section are the only software levels that are supported.
2. Configure the virtual device with the unique inquiry string as listed in this document. Emulating other devices is not supported. The inquiry string should not be
that of a real device even if that device is supported by NetBackup.
3. For each virtual library only the virtual tape drives that are listed are supported. This information can be found with each virtual library in the below section. Other
virtual tape drive types are not supported even if the real device it is emulating is supported with NetBackup.
4. Do not fill up the disk space on a virtual device. Doing so may cause unpredictable behavior of the device. The device vendor will then have to recover from any
errors that result from a full disk.
5. It is required that NetBackup move virtual volumes to physical media so that the data can be restored directly from physical media rather than needing to utilize
the virtual device as an intermediary restoration point. If the virtual device moves virtual volumes to physical media, NetBackup is not aware of the physical media
and may not be able to recover that data directly from it. Direct backups by the virtual device to physical media are not supported by Symantec; any support for this
must come from the device vendor who provides the capability.
6. When NetBackup expires a virtual volume, the virtual device is not aware that the data is no longer needed. When NetBackup begins writing to that virtual volume
at the beginning of the volume then the virtual library is aware that the rest of the data is not needed and it can free up the disk space. Because of this, the virtual
device may appear to be much closer to capacity than it really is.
7. Where support is shown for "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition" and "Windows 2000 Server Standard", it is implied the other versions of Windows Server
2003 and Windows 2000 Server are supported.
8. Where support is shown for "RHEL (AS)" it is implied that other versions of RHEL such as ES and x86 or x86-64 architectures are also supported.

1. Consolidated Media Management is supported through an integrated NetBackup 5.1 Media Server that runs natively on this device. Upgrading the integrated NetBackup 5.1 Media Server with future
maintenance packs (MPs) is recommended. This integrated NetBackup Media Server is not to be used as the Global Device Database Host, Volume Database Host, or Master Server in the NetBackup
environment. The purpose of the integrated Media Server is to duplicate and vault disk based backup images stored on the device to physical tape or another virtual tape on a second EMC Disk Library
page 10, Virtual Tape Libraries/Drives, EMC © 2007 Symantec Corporation / 2007-07-27
device. It is not to be used to backup NetBackup Clients across the LAN. The integrated NetBackup Media Server controls any attached physical tape libraries and drives or the second EMC Disk Library
device. See the appropriate Tape Library, Tape Drive, or Virtual Tape Drive/Library sections of this document for a list of supported devices that can be attached to the integrated Media Server. For further
details contact EMC for a Best Practice White Paper on the solution.

1. Symantec supports the methodology for the creation of physical tape media, readable by NetBackup, whose barcode is synchronized with the virtual media on the NearStore VTL (Direct Tape Creation),
as well as direct access to physical media behind the VTL system (pass through mode). This entire process retains full traceability of the media through the NetBackup catalog. Support for physical tape
creation is provided by Network Appliance.
2. Resume logic not supported on Windows 2000.

Tape Libraries
The library support information is listed below. This information is organized by vendor and provides information on the level of firmware tested, inquiry string
(vendor ID + product ID), the method(s) of controlling the robot, and any other important notes about the hardware and its compatibility.
Please Note:
1. This library listing is for robotic support only, not drive support. You must also verify that the specific drive used in the library is supported on the specific OS
platform(s) you plan to use by referring to the Tape Drive section of this document.
2. The firmware listed on this page is the firmware that has been tested. All firmware versions that are newer than what is listed are also supported.
3. Tested iSCSI versions of tape libraries (if any) are listed in the "iSCSI Configurations" section. Please reference the limitations listed in that section.
4. API robot types (ACS, TLH and TLM) are only supported on NetBackup Enterprise Server.
6. Robotic control is only supported on NetWare for devices where the Address Scheme column shows "SCSI ID".
7. HP uses the following methodology for their libraries: SureStore A/B where A is the number of drives and B is the number of cartridge slots. NetBackup Enterprise
Server supports both SureStore and SureStore E series libraries with DLT-1, DLT-7000, DLT-8000 or LTO drives installed.
See the NetBackup Device Configuration Guide for more information about the robot types and how they are configured.

In general, NetBackup can support one and only one media type that is UNKNOWN to NetBackup. If a version of ACSLS contains a media type that is not yet
supported by a particular version of NetBackup, then that media type can be configured as type UNKNOWN. However, if errors or anomalies occur, upgrading
NetBackup to a version where the media type is supported may be necessary. In general, Symantec testing occurs at the NetBackup version level where the new
media type support is added, or at a level where known bugs are addressed.
Please see the ACS chapter in the NetBackup Device Configuration Guide for more information on ACS configurations.

Please Note:
1. To ensure support, a device (both drive and library where applicable) must be supported by Symantec, the device manufacturer, and the Operating System
vendor.
2. ALL drives are SCSI versions unless otherwise noted with an FC which indicates Fibre Channel.
3. The Tape Alert column indicates the presence of Tape Alert functionality. NetBackup drive cleaning that is based upon Tape Alert flags is not implemented on
NetWare.
4. The firmware listed on this page is the firmware that has been tested. All firmware versions that are newer than what is listed are also supported.
5. Symantec tests and recommends the use of the Symantec-Veritas tape driver packaged with the latest release of the Symantec-Veritas Tape Device Driver
Installer when running 32-bit Windows. Unless otherwise noted, manufacturer's drivers are not tested by Symantec. However, they are supported, meaning we will
work with customers and vendors in an attempt to resolve any issues.
6. The Symantec-Veritas tape driver is not compatible with 64-bit Itanium or x64 Windows. The manufacturer's most recent driver should be used with Itanium or
x64 based Windows.
9. Where support is shown for "SLES" it is implied that both x86 and x86-64 architectures are supported.
10. Where support is shown for "Tru64 5.1B" it is implied that 5.1B2 and 5.1B3 are also supported.

The list below is intended to show the latest versions of the IBM device drivers that have been tested with NetBackup. Older versions may work but the versions
listed here are recommended.
AIX (atape) and HP-UX (atdd) require IBM device drivers since there are no native drivers on these platforms for IBM tape drives. Windows can use either
Symantec or IBM tape drivers.
If using the IBM Windows Tape Device Drivers be sure to use the installation wizard to install the bus enumerator drivers and that the exctapef.inf For Tivoli Storage
Manager drivers are selected. The exctapef.inf For Tivoli Storage Manager driver prevents a tape drive from being accessed by more than one process on a Media
Server which is a requirement for NetBackup.

FT server HBAs
This section lists fibre channel host bus adapters that have been tested in a SAN Client configuration for Fibre Transport. The NetBackup SAN Client Fibre
Transport hardware support model is an "OPEN" model. In other words, all host bus adapters (HBA), switches, bridges, and routers are supported in a SAN
environment. This means that if a fibre channel (FC) component is causing a problem, Symantec will work with the component vendor in an attempt to resolve the
problem, but resolution is not guaranteed.
Please Note:
3. Where support is shown for "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition" it is implied that DataCenter and Standard edition are also supported.
4. Where support is shown for "Linux RHEL (AS)" it is implied that the other editions of RHEL (ES, WS) are also supported.

Known Limitations
1. Emulex HBAs on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition have had restore issues which are being worked on between Emulex and Symantec but until these issues
are resolved it is recommended to not use Emulex HBAs on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.
2. There is a known issue with the HP A6826A HBA on HP-UX. This issue is being worked on between HP and Symantec but until these issues are resolved it is
recommended to not use this HBA model on HP-UX.

iSCSI Environments
This list of tested iSCSI components represents what has been tested in Symantec labs, or in Symantec-supervised partner labs. The NetBackup Enterprise Server
Shared Storage Option (SSO) hardware support model for Storage Area Network (SAN) components is an "OPEN" model. In other words, all iSCSI host bus
adapters (HBA), switches, bridges, "may" work in an iSCSI SAN environment. If a listed or unlisted iSCSI component is causing a problem, Symantec will
work with the component vendor in an attempt to resolve the problem, but resolution is not guaranteed.
Please Note:
1. Each column within the configuration tables represents the key components that were tested in an iSCSI SAN with the NetBackup Enterprise Server Shared
Storage Option. Those items connected with freeform lines should be grouped and configured together to ensure compatibility. Example: HBAs installed inside
servers, tape drives operating inside a tape library.
2. To ensure compatibility, Symantec, the device manufacturers, and the operating system vendor must support the combination of iSCSI devices.
3. The firmware and driver versions listed are minimum recommended levels. For device support and firmware/driver updates, please contact your hardware
vendor.
4. Where possible, avoid mixing of vendor HBAs. All like HBAs within your SAN should use the same firmware, BIOS and driver revision.
5. In some cases, tape libraries with mixed media drive types were tested. Either drive type may be used.
6. For virtual tape libraries, the tape drive listed is an emulated tape device. It is shown for device driver considerations.
7. iSCSI initiator drivers are included with most server class operating systems. NetBackup works seamlessly with these drivers on RedHat Linux, SLES Linux and
Windows Server 2003. Other operating systems such as AIX, HP-UX and Solaris iSCSI drivers have been found not to be compatible with NetBackup. iSCSI can
still be used on these platforms but would require 3rd party drivers from the iSCSI adapter manufacturer.

Optical Software
NetBackup supports third party software for backups to optical drives and libraries. The software makes an optical drive or library appear as a pseudo disk device. A
NetBackup policy is created that writes to a Disk Storage Unit managed by the software. The following subsections show the software currently supported by
NetBackup.
Pegasus InveStore
The NetBackup 6 release supports Pegasus InveStore software for backups to optical drives and libraries with Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 x86 32-bit media
servers. The list of optical drives and libraries that are supported by the InveStore software is available at: <http://www.pegasus-afs.com/hardware.html> The list
covers both Read/Write and WORM optical drives and libraries from a wide range of vendors including, but not limited to, Ultra Density Optical (UDO), ProData
(PDD) optical and DVD-RAM drives.
A Technote that provides additional information on using NetBackup with InveStore is available on the VERITAS customer support web site at:

The NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO) hardware support model for Storage Area Network (SAN) components is an open model. In other words, all host bus
adapters (HBA), switches, bridges, and routers are supported in a SAN environment. This means that if a fibre channel (FC) component is causing a problem,
Symantec will work with the component vendor in an attempt to resolve the problem, but resolution is not guaranteed.
Please Note:
To ensure compatibility, Symantec, the device manufacturers, and the operating system vendor must support the combination of SAN devices.
HBAs
This list of tested components represents what has been tested in Symantec labs, or in Symantec-supervised partner labs, but is not intended to be a list of
supported devices.
Please Note:
1. Where possible, avoid mixing of vendor HBAs. All like HBAs within your SAN should use the same firmware, BIOS and driver revision as is recommended by
HBA vendors.
2. Consult the hardware vendor's Web site for up-to-date firmware and driver updates (where applicable).
3. Often, the presence of a "No" in a particular operating system column identifies no HBA driver support has been provided by the HBA vendor.

4. Where support is shown for "Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition" and "Windows 2000 Server Standard", it is implied the other versions of Windows Server
2003 and Windows 2000 Server are supported.
5. Where support is shown for "RHEL (AS)" it is implied that other versions of RHEL such as ES and x86 or x86-64 architectures are also supported.
5. Where support is shown for "SLES" it is implied that both x86 and x86-64 architectures are supported.
