PERSONAL SYNOPSIS My metallurgical career began in the specialty steel industry as a staff engineer in corporate R&D centers. Management of R&D laboratory departments and quality systems followed. With a change in companies, focus was shifted to customer technical support. This responsibility expanded to the management of all of the technical support activities, including literature and websites, and supervision of the process metallurgists and technical support staff and laboratories for specialty steels. Poor economic conditions forced a move to the tungsten carbide industry. After learning the metallurgy of tungsten carbide, technical support and leadership was provided for manufacturing, quality control, and customers. Success was demonstrated in the ability to study and master new technologies, and provide leadership and cost reduction in application of those technologies. I exhibit strong skills in leading and coordinating work among various departments and technical disciplines. I am a self-starter, and I am especially skilled at analyzing information and data, and synthesizing the results into definitive action programs. I enjoy learning new technologies and I am motivated by improving the functionality of systems and processes to reduce effort and costs, and to improve consistency and quality. I believe in management with high integrity, openness, and honesty. I am skilled in Microsoft Office software, technical writing, metallography, photography, and computer graphics. Other interests include publishing woodworking articles, cycling, and playing guitar. April 2004 to August 2008 Chief Metallurgist and Quality Control Manager All technical aspects of the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide preforms were managed. * Three redundant grades were eliminated from the product mix to minimize inventory * Two new grades of cemented tungsten carbide were developed for new applications * Product sintering times were reduced by 10% * Furnace uniformity and reliability were increased, reducing scrap by 5% * Revision of laboratory procedures reduced production material approval times by 10% * A corporate quality system was established in anticipation of registration to ISO 9002 * Technical support, including failure analysis, was provided for customers Carl J. Dorsch Resume Page 2 of 2 Bodycote Materials Testing January 2004 to April 2004, Skokie, IL Principal Metallurgical Engineer Metallurgical characterizations, material recommendations, and failure analyses on all types of metal products were performed for nation-wide customers. Timken Latrobe Steel May 1997 to September 2003 Manager of Tool and High Speed Steel Product Metallurgy * Two process reliability metallurgists were managed and product yields improved by 3% * A new technical services metallurgist was trained and mentored * Management of the technical services laboratory staff resulted in a one-day reduction in the average time to perform a laboratory investigation * Training seminars and presentations for customers, technical organizations and sales were produced to boost sales and new product marketing * Customer services and failure analyses included about 400 written laboratory investigation reports per year, and visits as needed * Over $1million of customer quality claims were successfully defended * Printed technical literature was updated to eliminate the costs for outside printing and put in electronic format for first-time inclusion on the company web site Crucible Research, a Division of Crucible Materials Corporation 1979 - 1997 Pittsburgh, PA Research Engineer and Research Manager * Four new grades were developed in management of R&D for ingot-cast and powder-metal hot work steels, die casting die steels, and plastic mold steels * Work requisition paperwork was reduced by 50% in management of the heat treatment, forging, machine shop, metallography, and mechanical testing departments for the laboratory staff of about 40 engineers and technicians * A laboratory-wide, ISO-type Quality Assurance program was developed and implemented * One Research/QA engineer and six technical specialists were supervised and trained * New product training and technical programs were produced for customers and sales staff. This included an extensive training program produced for General Motors Corp. that was accredited for participants by Vincennes University in Indiana * Two new tests were developed to increase sales of hot work and wear resistant steels * Management of special projects resulted in the successful import and marketing of a new hot work steel, and selection as a special supplier for General Motors Corp. * Six U.S. patents and several European patents were granted for new tool steel grades EDUCATION: Carnegie-Mellon University B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and a simultaneous B.A. in Economics, 1978. Metallurgical Engineering emphasis was in physical metallurgy, and included four semesters of industrial internship work (co-op program) at the corporate research centers for Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and Crucible Materials Corp. The projects focused on process metallurgy, and included ladle injection facilities, electric arc furnaces, and continuous casting. PUBLICATIONS I have written eleven technical papers, magazine articles, and ASM/MEI video presentations. A list is available upon request.
