Zebra Pen Competition 2011
“To design a family of pens that reflects your own culture”
Beach Huts
In the UK, the seaside has a lot of history and heritage attached to it. An important part
of the British seaside scene are colourful beach huts in a row, at the top of any beach.
The owner of each hut is free to choose the colour they would like to paint it. This
is often seen as an expression of that person. I wanted to carry this over, and
into my design.
When the user wears the pen in their pocket using the
clip, the colours could be seen as a badge. Again reflecting on
that person and their personal values (favourite colours, football team
colours, national flag, religion, or charities).
There is a lot of potential here to exploit secondary branding; partnerships could be formed
with companies or groups. For example, a partnership with Team GB in the run up to and during the
London Olympics, using a colour combination of red, white and blue people could show their support for
the British team. This could be transferred to many other circumstances.

One of the main advantages the current packaging was the ease of production - just one piece of tape applied by hand
to keep the flowers secure within the ‘collar’ of cellophane. There is consideration for this in my design. There would still
only be one single piece of tape to secure the flowers in their packaging and still the ease of just placing them inside the
packaging in a similar way.
The tape creates ‘belt’ enhancing the framing effect for the flower heads and also containing its own water reservoir at the
base of the product. This results in enhanced product life; convenience for the customer and the possibility of a streamlined,
distribution network and point of sale display as from both environments buckets containing water can be removed. Single piece of tape Integrated water pocket
