Course Outline
Course Description:
Career Management is the process through which individuals and organizations jointly plan, guide,
direct, and influence people’s careers to meet the individual’s and the organization’s future needs.
This course introduces students to current ideas about how organizations and individuals are trying
to manage the problems created by the new rules of the workplace through career management.

Course Objectives:
• Students will be able to analyze human resource development situations for Career
Management elements and opportunities.
• Students will be able to integrate intellectual explanations of Career Management with
methodological competencies that can be applied in real life situations such as: managing
their career; seeking employment; marketing and branding themselves; understanding
their traits through self assessment, understanding the importance of organizational and
work setting assessment, economic assessment; and how work impacts life.
• Students will be able to implement Career Management solutions to real organizational &
personal issues in managing careers.
• Students will emerge with a framework and set of guidelines that can serve as a career
management “map” throughout their work lives.
• Students will be able to engage in career exploration, career goal setting, and career
strategy development.

Teaching Methodology:
• Use discussion / questioning / brief lectures to convey an understanding of mandatory
• Use simulations and role-plays to promote application and analysis of theory and methods.
• Include self-assessment tools and activities to demonstrate acquisition of Career
Management competencies (Knowledge, Behaviors, Abilities, Attitudes, Talents, Skills
and Other characteristics)
• Lead facilitated discussion of readings and journal articles.
• Use short cases to promote application, analysis, and solution of organizational problems.
• Have students explain theoretical models and applications to the class.

Class Discipline:
• In order to maximize class participation by all students, late arrivals will be marked as
absent; although they may like to attend the class. The best policy to avoid such a situation
is never be late.
• Similarly early departure from the class will earn an absence to the students; unless leave
is sought before early departure.
• Maintain presence in class and involve in maximum participation.

Intended Assignments:
• Why is understanding career management important both for individuals and
• Today, careers are more boundary less and / or protean in nature. What does this mean to
the working world and more importantly to us?
• How do you define career success and what different ways are there of defining career
• Describe the key indicators of effective career management. In other words, what should
you be aware of in order to be an effective career manager?

Testing and Grading:

• Grading will focus on your overall grasp of instructor’s teaching and your ability to
capture and reproduce, with understanding, the essence of the taped lesson.
• Another portion of the course grade will include discussion/attendance and active
participation in all class activities.
• The mid term exam will be graded for 30 points and the final exam will have a value of 50
• Students may prepare notebook for taking notes and for references.
