PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
ANALYTICAL GRAPHICS, INC., Exton, Pennsylvania * 2008-2010
Satellite mission planning and analysis software development
and distribution company with approximately 250 staff and
$50M in revenue; primarily serves aerospace and defense
clients.
Strategic Product Management Consultant: Led key strategic
product restructuring initiative, working closely with senior
team to create and implement a strategy to increase users of
free software products and drive users to migrate to paid
product lines ("freemium" business model). Updated desktop
product, creating modern, web-centric design and usage model,
enabling automated updates and product user collaboration.
Coordinated product manager and developer activities.
Identified potential product enhancements and features,
leveraging industry knowledge to accurately gauge user
requirements, champion innovations, and design marketing
and sales programs to increase user base. Developed
strategic plans to expand product usage and produce
broader appeal in vertical markets. Directed Educational
Alliance Program and led program support team.
Key Accomplishments:
- Successfully redesigned and modernized the "freemium"
product feature set, repositioning it as an open platform
and encouraging participation of 3rd party developers in a
new product ecosystem.
- Discovered important user targeting data, identifying
usage metrics that flagged user characteristics corresponding
to 30% conversion rates rather than average of 6%.
- Reduced sales and marketing costs from 52% to 45%
(and falling) of revenue by streamlining lead generation &
sales processes, improving freemium program performance and
monitoring product usage.
- Enhanced supporting product infrastructure and redesigned
business processes to encourage distribution and collaborative
use on the web; built internal consensus on strategy.
- Initiated company's participation in design competitions
including being the preferred software vendor for the Google
Lunar X-Prize and Canadian Satellite Design Challenge; created
and led the company's annual University Design Competition.
- Advanced open platform repositioning initiative by
advocating for a strategic incubator for start-up companies
that used company technology.
- Worked with search engine optimization consultant to review
site and implemented changes that elevated site's page rank
from 50+ to top 10 status for keywords relevant to primary

GREAT SWAP SHOP, Los Altos, California * 2004-2007
Consumer web start-up company serving the home exchange
industry by facilitating 250K+ vacation home exchanges per
year via a network of more than 30 independent sites offering
paid membership subscriptions.
Founder: Created concept to capitalize on home exchange industry
opportunities. Developed strategy to eliminate constraints
imposed by independent site memberships by serving as an
aggregator, thus increasing the location and variety of homes
available for exchange. Managed all aspects of business start-up
without external funding. Developed and maintained product,
enabling detailed queries and product matches across multiple
sites. Forged partnerships with existing sites, persuasively
conveying value proposition to other web entrepreneurs to develop
new business and improve marketplace reach.
Key Accomplishments:
- Created unique opportunity to capitalize on networking
potential in a fragmented web services market and successfully
conveyed value proposition to potential partners.
- Developed standard XML Schema (HomeXML) as well as
proprietary matching technology to create a fully functional
tool that added significant value for partners and the broader
industry.
- Successfully proposed revenue sharing and channel partner
relationships with leading home exchange listing services.
ADDITIONAL POSITIONS
SWARMNET, 2001-2002, Founder: Launched web-based start-up
to capitalize on automated information sharing and reuse
across a broad user base, pioneering an early collaborative
rules-based expert system application as a precursor to
Web 2.0. Managed all facets of start-up, including prototype
development, management team recruitment, investor
identification and development of user and beta customer
network. Developed working prototype and presented business
plan to angel investors.
ANALYTICAL GRAPHICS, INC., 1997-2000, Vice President of
Product Management: Managed development of satellite mission
planning and analysis software, integrating product
technologies, customer base and marketing strategies from
acquired company (see below). Restructured core product,
serving as change agent to promote new business model entailing
free base product and revenue-generating add-ons. Leveraged
deep technical, customer and industry knowledge to build
consensus for change, communicating value proposition
internally and externally. Replaced ACT databases with
integrated ONYX client / server CRM system to support sales,
marketing and technical support efforts. Played integral role
in building pipeline from 8K to 42K self-qualified leads and
growing revenue from a baseline of $7M to $50M in 2004.
Generated positive press on marketing initiative via extensive
Wall Street Journal interview.
CYGNUS ENGINEERING, 1990-1997, President & Co-Founder:
Launched company that developed and marketed PC software for
satellite mission planning and analysis for the global
aerospace and defense sectors (NASA, USAF, the European Space
Agency, etc.). Won an Air Force SBIR contract in this domain.
Created product concepts and directed technical aspects of
development, overseeing 5 engineers. Managed product
marketing and sales functions. Bootstrapped company with no
significant outside investment, maintaining consistent
profits until profitable sale of company to Analytical
Graphics, Inc. in 1997.
CAREER NOTE: Past job history includes Research Specialist
and Senior Research Engineer positions at Lockheed Missiles
and Space Company. Also performed master's thesis research
