Introduction

The experience I have that is relevant to any engineering position includes a st

rong background in installation and repair of a wide range of equipment and mach
inery. I have learned from the ground up how things work and why they fail. In 1
992 I began my formal study of engineering. While in engineering school I contin
ued to work full time, developing a metal fabrication/welding business. With thi
s work I learned to tailor my designs to my fabrication capabilities in addition
to the customers needs. I also learned that the people doing the production wor
k need to provide full feedback to the designers before a product design is comp
lete.
As for my work performance, I have been praised for my ability for quick learnin
g and problem solving, and being very easy to work with. According to my advisor
for my Masters research project, my "overall performance was spectacular. In my
first engineering job, I quickly earned the trust of my supervisors and co-work
ers, and became the primary airplane performance engineer in the company, superv
ising the performance work of several other engineers during the massive FAA cer
tification effort.
Work History
December 2009 to May 2010. EU OPS 1 certification of the Eclipse 500 Very Light
Jet (Eclipse Aerospace, Inc). The reduction and expansion of the performance dat
a from the takeoff and landing flight tests were done during this period. The wo
rk included: developing a set of computer scripts to combine several data stream
s and extract takeoff and landing distances, speeds, and airplane attitude from
the data; developing the takeoff flight path data required by CS 23.61; writing
much of the performance substantiation report; and participating in EASA/FAA/EAI
reviews of flight test data, analysis methods, Flight Manual data and formal ce
rtification report.
May 2005 to February 2009. Aerodynamic Performance Engineer for Eclipse Aviation
Corporation. I worked in a rich environment of engineers from all aviation disc
iplines, planning for development and certification programs for the Eclipse Jet
. I developed flight test data analysis and expansion methods and computer tools
. I wrote large reports documenting flight test efforts, analysis methods and re
sults, as well as certification reports substantiating compliance with FAA and E
ASA regulations. These reports were subjected to a rigorous internal review proc
ess before company "publication", then submitted to the American and European re
gulating agencies for their review, feedback, and final approval. Some additiona
l details of my work for Eclipse Aviation: I
* Produced a wide range of airplane performance data for internal and external c
ustomers.
* Used Pratt & Whitney Canada engine performance program to create the engine pa
rameters used by the performance expansion programs.
* Supported flight test operations in briefings and telemetry center.
* Worked with instrumentation and data streams that measured temperatures, air a
nd fluid pressures, positions, flow rates, accelerations, rotation rates and pos
itions, control forces and electrical loads. Identified many instances of instru
mentation problems, failures, and calibration errors by reviewing flight test da
ta, and then worked with instrumentation engineers and technicians to correct th
em.
1991 to 2005. Owner of business in Salt Lake City designing, fabricating and in
stalling a variety of custom metal products including structural and architectur
al steel and aluminum, fences, railings, staircases, awnings, racks and trailers
. I worked with architects, engineers, contractors and customers to optimize des
igns for fabrication and installation.
1988 to 1991. Self-employed Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Electrical Tech
nician in the US Virgin Islands, doing installation and repair for many restaura
nts, markets, hotels, private properties, power boats and sail boats.
1985 to 1988. Maintenance Manager for Guest Services, Inc in Sequoia National Pa
rk. I managed a crew of 15 men and women in the maintenance, repair, and constru
ction of all facilities used by Guest Services in four widely separated areas of
the national parks. Facilities included ski areas, service stations, hotels, re
staurants, retail stores, and employee housing. Equipment included ski lift driv
es and controls, slope grooming equipment,
refrigeration and heating equipment, boilers, plumbing and electrical systems, a
nd snow clearing equipment. I organized and supervised all maintenance and const
ruction projects done in the parks for Guest Services.
Education
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering 2003, University of Utah. Thesis on
Reconfigurable Flight Control. Developed facility with flight control concepts,
built embedded sensor systems using commercial and custom hardware, developed te
lemetry methods, learned to fly RC airplanes, developed data management and anal
ysis methods and tools using commercial and custom software.
During this flight control project, I gained experience with sensors that measur
ed pressures, rotary positions, accelerations, and rotation rates. I designed th
e systems for installation, calibration, in-flight data collection and encoding,
telemetry transmission, ground station reception, decoding, real-time analysis
and feedback control, and finally, analysis and presentation of results.
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering 2000, University of Utah. Senior D
esign Project developing model aircraft and sensor systems for Reconfigurable Fl
ight Control project. Several classes provided experience with load cells, strai
n gages and position sensors collecting data for solid mechanics experiments inc
luding strengths of structures and fatigue properties.
Computer skills: Windows, Microsoft Office, Visual Basic, Fortran, ANSI C, Matla
b, Mathcad, National Instruments DiaDem (data display, presentation and analysis
). I have done some design with AutoCAD in school and for fabrication projects,
and some school projects with ProEngineer.
Pilots License, Airplane Single Engine Land in 1985 in Cessna 172s.
Personal Activities: Back-country skiing, sailing the Caribbean, classical guita
r, hang gliding, aerial sight-seeing in Cessnas, bicycle touring, rock climbing,
canyoneering, mountain biking.
