Clean Air Solution From Coconut Shell Charcoal Industry With Liquid

Smoke Technology

Indonesia is one of the biggest coconut (Cocos nucifera ) products supply

in the world. Utilization of this fruit spread in varied ranging like food, cosmetics
and health. One of the results from the processing side (biomass waste) is the
coconut shell. It’s generally used as a raw material of creative goods, crafts or
other secondary products such as charcoal, activated carbon or firewood.
Industrial processing of coconut shell charcoal product is one of the
industry that developed from the waste of coconut primary product. charcoal
generally produce by burning and heating process. However, the development of
this industry have a environmental impact, because the side result of charcoal
production waste is a smoke that cause air pollution. Obviously, this is the
problem for people who live in the surrounding environment since it cause
inconvenience and disruption respiratory. Presently, smoke waste in charcoal
production can be convert to liquid smoke product that have many utilization.
Liquid smoke (wood vinegar) can be used as an alternative food preservative,
fertilizer, odor remover (deodorizer) and latex coagulation in natural rubber
industry.
From this case, me and the Association of Agricultural Engineering
Students of IPB (HIMATETA) with Dr. Rokhani Hasbullah as our lecturer , try
to solve the problem of air pollution by smoke in charcoal industry and promote
the liquid smoke as an profitable products. This program start in December, 2008
and still continue until now. We straight doing the research to development other
technology and process so that it can be more efficient, cheap and eco-friendly.
Several steps that we do for instance ;
a. Doing the comprehensive research to design a new technology/
instrument that economically and environmental friendly for smoke
converter to liquid smoke. We also doing the research to know the
advantages of coconut charcoal liquid smoke.
b. Applied the technology that we invent in Wulung Prima Commanditaire
Vennootschop (CV) as an home small industry that produce the charcoal.
c. Socialize and promote the benefit of coconut charcoal liquid smoke to the
people through several agricultural exhibition.
The budget of this program is about Rp. 6,000,000 or ($ 600) . Almost 50
% of financial support we got from university grant and the other from our
organization budget and donations.

Table 1. Budget Allocation

No. Allocation budget

1 Charcoal converter unit to liquid smoke 5,000,000
2 Lab analysis and product desain 300,000
3 Socialization and exibition 500,000
4 Transportation, comunication and others 200,000
Amount 6,000,000

The converter unit can still produce charcoal in accordance with the
standard quality, but without the waste of smoke into the air as before, because it
convert to liquid form. In addition, Wulung Prima (CV) income will increase
because the liquid smoke product have an economic value. For information, the
price of charcoal produt is about Rp.3,000/ kg and the liquid smoke can reach Rp.
10,000 – 15,000/ liter . If all of the charcoal industry which is currently still a
contributor of smoke waste apply this technology, then this could become a mass
movement to reduce emissions and air pollution. Charcoal industry with no waste-
friendly environment is not a dream.
