I wish to shout aloud as I proclaim

with the deep-girdled Charites that

Telesicrates is the man, Pythian victor with the bronze shield,
blessed, the crowning garland of chariot-driving Cyrene .
(Pindar Pyth. 9.1-4)
The words "with the deep-girdled Charites" may be a direct echo of the phrase in the fifth ode of
Bacchylides, written two years earlier, 6 but it is the connection with a garland (4) which is interesting
. The athlete Telesicrates is a garland : He crowns his city as he himself was crowned in the games .
The epinician poet then performs a third and climactic crowning with his song-garland . 7 The
culmination is extended by the repetition of the ode, a perpetual coronation . Why are the Charites
present in this context? Because they carry echoes of lush fecundity from their early presentation as
vegetation goddesses, and this echo enhances the imagery of the garland crown .

"Je veux, avec les Grâces à la belle ceinture, chanter d'une voix forte la victoire que dans Pytho,
Télésicrate à remportée à la course malgré le poids d'un énorme bouclier d'airain." (Pindar Pyth. 9.1-
4).

L'expression «avec les charites profondes» peuvent être un écho direct de la phrase dans la
cinquième ode de Bacchylides, écrite deux ans plus tôt6, mais c'est la connexion avec une guirlande
(4) qui est intéressante. L'athlète Télisicrate est une guirlande: il couronne sa ville car il a été
couronné dans les jeux. Le poète epinicien effectue alors un troisième et un couronnement
climatique avec sa guirlande de chants. 7 L'aboutissement est prolongé par la répétition de l'ode, un
couronnement perpétuel. Pourquoi les Charites sont-ils présents dans ce contexte? Parce qu'ils
portent des échos de la fécondité luxuriante à partir de leur présentation initiale comme déesses de
la végétation, et cet écho améliore l'image de la couronne de la guirlande.
