Introduction.

My next report for the subject CKV is about the visit of the Photo museum in Rotterdam. I
have to write this report, to tell what I have learned from it, and how I experienced it. We
went to the exhibition angry, it is most about the topic radicalism. We saw photo’s which
presented us the main idea and the different forms and types of radicalism. We had a tour
through the museum, and a woman told us what the photo’s showed us. The exhibition
ANGRY is a project of the Dutch Photo museum, Paradox and Kosmopolis Rotterdam. With a
wide variety of photo projects, video works,
media reports, interviews and work of youth the
youth itself, ANGRY shows that radicalization of
young people from all cultures and all times.
ANGRY condemns and criticizes any position, but
examines and questions the origins and
consequences of being radical.

What exhibition did I see.

We went to the exhibition Angry. It is an exhibition about young an radicalism. Since 9/11,
radicalization is a hot topic and radicalism is by definition labeled as negative. But it was -
born out of idealism - not often a driving force for social change? And who is radical and who
decides? Does the increased radicalism in the Netherlands, especially the image or changed?
ANGRY looks to radicalization among young and looking for answers to these questions from
three perspectives: artists, media and young people themselves. ANGRY an exhibition of a
rich-in this time of polarization is very timely subject that affects us all.
We got a tour in this Photo museum and we got to see all kinds of photo’s which topic was
radicalism, on those pictures you could see a lot, you could replace yourself in those
situations.
A selection of important international artists, photographers and filmmakers reflect on
aspects of contemporary radicalism. Among them, Rineke Dijkstra, Willie Doherty, Joel
Sternfeld and Jules Spinatsch. In a video installation are twelve radicals and ex-radicals to the
floor, including Maaike Meijer (Purple September), Izz ad-Din Ruhulessin (Muslim, student
political science), Isa Short (cracker), Roel van Duin (Provo, goblin movement) and Saskia
Duys (Christian activist). They speak about their ideals, boundaries, purity, anger and feeling
of belonging. By contrast, we see how the 'radical ‘in the media portrayed, and how radicals
in turn to use the media to influence the imaging. The young people in the exhibition to the
word through various projects in group and school groups are made under the supervision of
Kosmopolis Rotterdam.
During the tour, we could listen to some of those
important international artists, photographers
and filmmakers, we could listen what their
ideals, boundaries, purity, anger and feeling of
belonging were.

Figuration.
The building where the Photo Museum is, was not build to serve as a photo museum, first it
was a warehouse called Las Palmas. The museum is quiet big, if you look at the picture on
the front page of this report, you will know why I said that. The building has a lot of
windows, that is now so the photo’s in the museum look better. Some windows are taped
because not every photo can have that much light. The exhibition we went to was Angry, it
was most about radicalism, all the pictures, were presenting the topic radicalism at another
way. I think that the photo’s are hang up in the exhibition very clear. All the different styles
and themes hang together and every wall has his own theme in the photo’s. The person who
arranges use light and darkness to show the photo’s, some are underneath a stoplight and
others are hanging in a dark room, with almost no light. I think that the way in which our
tour guide guided us, was a clear way to show the photo’s, she did it step by step. Every
theme or subject was separated. It was very clear to me at what I was looking, what the
photo’s had to suggest.

Content.
This exhibition is about radicalism as I already told you before. The
exhibition shows photo’s like the picture on the right for example, they
also showed us other forms of radicalism. I think that the title of the
exhibition does say something about it. It is angry, you can see it in a lot
of different ways. I thought the exhibition angry was all about angry
people, actually you can imagine it is, because with radicalism you can
also think that people act that way because they are angry about
something, and then this could be their way of expressing their self’s. I
think that the one who decorated the room, did it good. I think that the main
reason was to see which types of radicalism there are. They hang up all the different themes
with each other and I thought it was in a way from bad to worse situations. I think that the
presentation of the photo’s is in a good and logical order. It’s like I said before, in my
experience it’s from bad to worse. At every photo’s is a kind of plate with the title of the
photo and who the photographer. I do understand the way the organizers give some more
information about the photo’s. It’s very useful because now you know some more about the
photo.

Function, my reaction, conclusion and.

6
Function.
I think that the function of this exhibition has two reasons; I think that the main reason was
to learn especially the youth something more about radicalism and that this happens more
in the world than you know. Some daily moments can also be seen as radicalism, like what
we saw as an example in the exhibition, that 2 girls were passing 3 or 4 black man. This is a
situation that can happy every day. The last target could be that the photographers want the
people who watch their photo’s to really think about the situation and to give it their own
interpretation.

My reaction.
When I heard I was going to a photo museum I was a bit exited, but when I came there, I
thought it was disappointing. It was very boring and the woman who guided us, talked very
slowly, it wasn’t pleasurable to listen to what the woman had to say. It was not what I
expected. The think that made most impression to me was that we could go outside with a
camera to make our own radical photo’s. We went back inside and we put the photo’s
together.
I thought that the whole tour in the photo museum was boring, as I already told you, the
part where we could go outside was most fun. When we got the tour I thought it was very
boring, to be honest, I eventually was not listening to the woman anymore.

Conclusion.
Eventually everything I have to say is that the whole trip could have been more exited. It was
very boring and I was excited to go home. I thought it could have been a more exiting trip.
