Botox Injections Fight Underarm Sweat

Botox Treatment May Offer Long-Term Relief From Hyperhidrosis WebMD Health News
July 26, 2005 -- A treatment made famous for fighting wrinkles may also provide lasting relief from another embarrassing condition: excessive underarm sweat. The first long-term study of Botox injections in the treatment of the common sweating disorder shows the injections can safely reduce underarm sweat for up to two years. Known in medical terms as axillary hyperhidrosis, the condition affects more than a million people in the U.S. People with this condition sweat up to four times more than normal in order to maintain a normal body temperature. People with the disorder often suffer from difficulty in social situations and say it significantly interferes with their daily activities. "These long-term data demonstrate that Botox for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis over a two-year period is a safe and effective therapeutic option for patients who otherwise struggle with substantial impairment," says researcher Dee Anna Glaser, MD, professor of dermatology and vice chairman of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, in a news release. The FDA approved Botox (botulinum toxin type A) for treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis that can't be resolved with prescription creams or antiperspirants in July 2004. Botox Offers Lasting Relief In this three-year study, researchers examined the safety, effectiveness, and cost of repeated treatment with Botox injections on people with axillary hyperhidrosis and the impact of the treatment on their quality of life. The study involved 193 people who had participated in an earlier one-year clinical trial of Botox for hyperhidrosis. They were given the option to continue treatment every eight weeks if symptoms persisted under this follow-up study. In the follow-up study, researchers found Botox continued to be effective with repeated treatment. After the first treatment, 82% had up to a 75% reduction in sweat production in four weeks after the injection. Four weeks after treatments two and three, 79% experienced the same degree of relief. Overall, 94% of patients required four or fewer Botox injections to control their symptoms during the two-year study.

Facts About Botox

Botox first began to be used in the 1980s to treat uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm) and misaligned eyes (strabismus). Cosmetic treatments were pioneered by dermatological surgeons in 1987. Botox is reportedly a favorite with Oscar nominees who have injections in their armpits to paralyze the sweat glands there thus making sure that they dont have sweaty patches under their arms. According to Allergan, producer of the drug, Botox currently is in use or under study as a treatment in more than 70 countries worldwide.

How to Stay Healthy During The Summer While on Vacation

Five Ways to Stay Fit While on Vacation
By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD WebMD Weight Loss Clinic Feature

Plan Ahead to Fit in Fitness: Vacations should be an opportunity to reenergize, refresh, and relax -- not an excuse to take a break from health. When planning your vacation, opt for locations that will allow you to engage in physical activities you enjoy. Keep in mind that physical activity is the ticket to enjoying extra calories without weight gain. Be Prepared: When you travel, whether by plane, train, or automobile, be

Facts About Sun Exposure

UVA rays cause skin aging and wrinkling and contribute to skin cancer, such as melanoma. Because UVA rays pass effortlessly through the ozone layer (the protective layer of atmosphere, or shield, surrounding the earth), they make up the majority of our sun exposure. Beware of tanning beds because they use UVA rays as well as UVB rays. UVB rays are also dangerous, causing sunburns, cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), and effects on the immune system. They also contribute to skin cancer. UVC rays are the most dangerous, but fortunately, these rays are blocked by the ozone layer and don't reach the earth.

prepared with healthy food so you wont have to eat whatever is available. Start the day with a nutritious breakfast, then pack easy and satisfying snacks or a small meal, such as a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole-grain bread, a piece of fruit, and some cut-up veggies with hummus. Avoid Dining-Out Disasters: Eating out may pose the biggest challenge for avoiding vacation weight gain. "It is easy to control calories if you stay away from fried, crispy, or creamy foods; hold extras such as cheese and mayo; top salads with low-fat dressings; drink water instead of sodas -- simple things that can shave calories and make room for the special treats," says Blatner. Indulge in Moderation: Deprivation is no fun when you're on vacation. Instead, "the name of the game is moderation when it comes to controlling calories from treats and alcohol," says Blatner. So have one scoop of ice cream instead of the sundae, or split that decadent dessert with a dining companion. Pare Down Portions: Even when you're on vacation, portions count if you want to avoid weight gain.

A patient is not a commodity. She or he is a human being with dreams, priorities and choices. I see it as a duty to help them achieve their dreams by guiding them in making choices that lead to the healthy results, and by using the most advanced technology in the most ethical way. - Cheri A.
