Slips, trips and falls commonly occur as a result of: y Falls from a height such as trailers, ladders, docks, falling down steps and stairway or landing awkwardly after a jump or y Falls on the same level, including falls up stairs, all slips, trips and stumbles even if a fall doesn't necessarily follow. Generally hazards from falls from freight transport happen either during moving to and from vehicles and plant or loading and unloading work, positioning loads, securing freight and minor maintenance work. Work environments and employee activities differ yet incidents often occur when: y There is an unobserved obstacle or limitation y A person is unaware of the potential hazard or y The type of condition of the floor surface represents a potential hazard

Workplace Slips & Falls

TOOLBOX MEETINGS

There are many ways that we can improve, monitor and maintain the workplace to eliminate or at least greatly reduce the hazards faced by employee and everyone. Everyone in the workplace needs to be aware of potential hazards and understand their role to reducing the problem. Good preventative strategies include: y Good housekeeping y Maintenance procedures/ rules y Workplace and building design y Visual aids & warning signs y Communication In the WA Code of Practice on the Prevention of falls at Workplaces (2004) falling is defined as a person falling from, through or into a place or thing". This code provides practical guidance and preventative measures on meeting the requirements in the WA Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and the Regulations relating to the prevention of falls. It is not possible to deal with every situation that may be found at workplaces, where there is potential to for a person to "fall". However employer (through management) and employee involvement in the process of identifying hazards from falls and assessing and controlling the risks will help to ensure that: y The risks from falls are identified because employees are most likely to know about risks associated with their work; y Employees have a commitment to this process and any changes, such as control measures that are implemented and y Fall incidents are eliminated or reduced. Identifying hazards Identifying hazards involves recognising things or situations that may cause injury of harm to the health of the person such as where a person may fall from, through or into a place or thing. QUSTIONS 1. How slips or falls occur? 2. Provide some examples of preventive strategies? 3. What is the definition of falling?
