XBMC Live setting up Wifi

January 25th, 2010 Piethein Strengholt Leave a comment Go to comments For those interested in setting up Wifi using XBMC Live or Ubuntu, lets start installing the necessary packages:
sudo apt-get install wireless-tools wpasupplicant

The packages installed will allow us to configure wifi and encrypt the password. My network is configured with WPA2 but the configuration procedure for others kind of networks should be quite the same. After weve installed the packages we should be able to encrypt passphares with the following command:
wpa_passphrase your_essid your_ascii_key

your_essid should be replaced by the name of the network. your_ascii_key should be replaced with the password. This is just an example: wpa_passphrase 'Wireless Home' password100 The result should be:
network={ ssid="Wireless Home" #psk="12345678" psk=fe727aa8b64ac9b3f54c72432da14faed933ea511ecab1 5bbc6c52e7522f709a }

Now we have the network and key encrypted we can start adding this information to the interfaces configuration file:
sudo pico /etc/network/interfaces

Add the following lines of code, the wpa-psk line should match the result from wpa_passphrase:
auto wlan0

iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-ssid Wireless Home wpa-ap-scan 1 wpa-proto WPA #RSN wpa-pairwise TKIP #CCMP wpa-group TKIP #CCMP wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK wpa-psk ffe1b80746215def132a6afa2f192c90f5bed672b5793f17362086a7624ebe9d

Now we should restart the networking services:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

By typing ifconfig we can validate that were connected to the network. In this tutorial Im using TKIP encryption. wpa_passphrase your_essid your_ascii_key Ik krijg steeds de melding dat wpa_passphrase: command not found? Wat doe ik verkeerd? Normaal zijn de wireless-tools wpasupplicant al genstalleerd. Ook als ik ze wil installeren met de sudo apt-get geeft hij aan dat ze reeds genstalleerd zijn. Wie o wie kan mij helpen? 4. subutux September 6th, 2010 at 13:53 | #4 Reply | Quote Nice! Bobek Can u install it? I try, but installer dont find hard disk...
