Message from the President

i Bulls!

This week we list all of our club's representative players and give them a bit of a plug as they prepare for the June long weekend carnivals around the state. Good luck boys! We are in the final stages of planning for the March past - it should be another great event and we'll be sending out transport details this week also. Finally, we are considering arranging a group booking for the Wallabies vs 'Boks. If we get numbers, we'll coordinate a bus and group purchase the tickets. Let your coach or manager know if you are keen and hopefully we can make it happen! Good luck (hopefully improves) this the weekend weather

Round 6 - vs Dundas/Liverpool

The U6 team were on fire this week playing a combined Dundas and Liverpool team. The team backed up well and are starting to generate some space between themselves when playing. It was great to watch a line of our boys scoring and tagging. The boys even had a go at some lineouts this game. Zeke Farrow, Koby Owen, Timothy Grehan and Harrison Irwin were all excellent on attack, always moving together, and backing up. The kids are definitely playing more like a team now. Round 7 vs Rooty Hill The U6 team this week played Rooty Hill and put in a great effort against a team which had to made up with half Under 7 players to make up enough numbers, our defense this week was fantastic with the opposition actually going backwards in attack most of the game. Great defensive efforts were shown by all of the team with special mentions needing to go to Zeke Farrow and Koby Owen for their out wide and chasing down defense and Harrison Irwin for some great tagging in the middle. Our team also took the ball up well with every player willing to take the ball up with some great tries scored; stand out of the day in attack was Mitchell Holmes with some great runs, big side step and a huge stack on the line that he got up laughing from! Well done to the Boys who were on top of this game against some older and faster players!

Spin doctor
By Dan Cottrell Some coaches, especially those working in Rugby League, hate players using the spin pass. Here we look at the pros and cons of this pass (sometimes called the "spiral" pass), and identify times when you can use it in a game. Speed of pass v speed of delivery A spinning or spiraling pass should move quicker through the air than a normal pass according to aerodynamic laws. It will have a flatter trajectory as well. However, the speed of the ball through the air must be balanced with the time it takes to set up to spin pass the ball. For instance the hands need to be repositioned and the hips turned. Also the receiver will need to adjust to take a spin pass and be ready to pass the ball on. Two spin passes could easily take as long to move to a wide player as three shorter normal passes. Accuracy and Length A spin pass should go further than a normal pass. However, it might not be as accurate because the shape of the ball and the position of the valve mean that the flight of the ball will be irregular as it spins through the air. Inevitably, longer passes will be more difficult to control. On the other hand, with a longer spin pass the recipient has time to adjust his line of running to catch the ball. Over shorter distances, both passes will only be as accurate as the skill of the passer. Breaking down the skills into their component parts, a spin pass requires the hands to turnover the ball while the normal pass is more like a push. Arguably under pressure, pushing the hands towards the target is likely to be more accurate than turning over the hands to spin the ball. It is also often the case that a player will spin hard off his strong hand and pass normally off his weaker hand, regardless of the circumstances of the game. (Continued over page...)

Round 6 - vs Dundas Another great game from our team, easily eluding the opposition defense, and slowly down their game play. A number of kids really stepped up their game. Congratulations to Emily Liggett showing great speed and scoring her first try! James Darmanin and Tyrese Lokeni played great all round games constantly attacking and defending. Toby Christini and Hamish Newton showed some deft sidesteps to bemuse the opposition.

Round 6 - Norwest 45 drew Liverpool 45 This was our toughest game so far the boys really had to work hard to get across the line. We faced a quality opposition, and up against some big boys in their forward pack. From the start whistle to the end of the game, the lead changed hands every 10 minutes. With ball in had we played smart rugby and ran outside their big forwards to score our tries. They too had a similar tactic which resulted in a high scoring game Norwest 45 and Liverpool 45. We were reasonably happy with this draw, however the lads need to get back to basics and get tackling techniques down pat. Player of the day was Logan Karaka. Well done mate with 3 tries to his name on the day. Round 7 - Norwest 38 def Rooty Hill 27 The boys had a good result last weekend. We played Rooty Hill at their home ground and knew this was going to be a reasonably tough game. We played a good first half with plenty of ball distribution as well as great runs through the middle of their forward pack. The second half Rooty Hill came back strongly and scored easy tries. With plenty of determination, the boys did not give up and managed to get a converted try in the dying minutes of the game. Well done boys you did well. Player of the day went to Silas for good solid runs up the middle and around the fringes as well as scoring a couple of tries. Great Effort!

Spin Doctor (continued) Overlaps A spin pass can both create and destroy overlaps. In a three v two a spin pass can miss out the middle player and get the ball to the player in space wider out. A spin pass can reach the player in space faster, with a flat trajectory, avoiding the chance of an interception. The danger is that the player marking the middle man simply drift out. Missing Players Michael O'Connor, head coach of the Australia Rugby Sevens squad, says that "spiral passing" (as it is known in Australia) means that key players can be missed out. He points out that Stephen Larkham at fly half was skilful enough to spin pass at pace on the gain line, often passing the ball beyond inside centre. The tactic was used consistently and Matt Giteau was often missed out. The more that players gain confidence in the ability to spin pass, the more likely they are to miss out attacking opportunities closer to them.

The Under 9s played Dundas at Warwick Farm in Round 6. The early 8.30 kickoff time had several parents looking around for the coffee facilities. Unfortunately Dundas did not have the required number of players for the start of the game and had to forfeit. Both sides took the opportunity for a practice game. Congratulations to Alex, Julian, Conor, Lachie T for good sportsmanship in helping the other team for half the game. Special mention particularly goes to Edward who played both halves for Dundas and had a fantastic game. So eventually a shortened 10 a side game was underway with the boys enjoying the chance to test their skills against each other. Lachlan D added his name to the season try scoring tally along with some good runs and tackles. Nathan made some tough tackles. Julian was great around the field, its hard to believe this is his first year of Rugby. Conor seemed to be involved in every ruck and maul and only just missed out on the Man of the Match. The deserved winner was Chad who had his usual strong game with some robust play. Round 7 - Norwest 17 (3 tries, 1 conv) def by Rooty Hill 31 The Under 9s played Rooty Hill in a game which pitted the two most powerful teams against each other. The Norwest boys displayed courage, determination and Rugby skills on the day. Unfortunately so did Rooty Hill who eventually won the game. In a great game which had everything including fierce defence, torrid breakdown play and skilful backline moves which saw the ball sweep up and down the field the boys can be proud of themselves. Norwest were on the back foot after about 20 seconds, with the backs caught in the ruck quick recycling of the ball allowed the opposition to score almost untouched. The boys worked hard and with Lachie T scoring late in the second half (his third of the day) and an earlier conversion by Alex had us within 7 points of tying the game and a glimmer of hope. However Rooty Hill scored again to ensure the result. Matthew had another strong game and Lachie Ts efforts kept us in touch. Conor was awarded the Man of the Match because of his play at the breakdown and a couple of superb tackles.

Under 11s
Round 6 - Hills 25 def Norwest 24 Our local derby was played in good spirits on Saturday but unfortunately our boys didn't show up to play as a team. In what was an exciting (and sometimes frustrating) game to watch the boys showed plenty of individual enthusiasm and never gave up - they just didn't click. We scored some great tries. One in particular would have made this weeks Super 15 highlights reel when TJ barged up the field, beating a half a dozen of the opposition before off loading to Connor on the inside for him to score under the posts. The game went to the wire with our boys scoring on full time with a tricky conversion just missed to hand Hills the match. Good effort boys - we'll get them next year! Round 7 - Norwest 53 def Merrylands 10 The boys played Merrylands today and put in an awesome effort. In the best team performance so far this year they dominated the breakdown which gave us the opportunity to spin the ball wide and take advantage of our zippy backline. James, TJ, Robert and Cayliss tore up the opposition down the middle, whilst Lachlan, Connor, Cody and Ben tore them up out wide. Player of the day went to Dylan who ran straight, tackled hard and did his job fantastically. Special mention to Blake and Jayden who both played a half a game for Merrylands to match numbers - Jayden even managed to score a try for them in the dying seconds so that 58 of the 63 points were scored by Bulls! Well done boys.... We have a big game next week against Blacktown. Train hard this week.

When to use the spin pass The spin pass has a major role to play in two main areas. First the clearing pass, where it is the role of the scrum half, in most cases, to get the ball away from the base of scrum or ruck, or from a lineout or maul. Secondly, with more sides kicking in field, the back three of 11, 14 and 15 will need to use spin passes to spread the ball out from the first point of receiving. Summary The spin pass cannot be the only pass in the repertoire. The best players need to balance speed and accuracy with using the pass as an attacking weapon to beat opposition players. It is a powerful tool that can reduce options as well as create them.

Round 6 vs Western Raptors

R E P O R T S

Our team was cut to only 13 players with injuries and sickness this week and the boys were more than a little nervous taking on the huge and aggressive players of Rooty Hill. The boys could have forfeited but to their coaches pride they decided they would like to play the game. With a good attitude the boys should only take positives from a very one sided match. Happy to come through the match with no injuries we look forward to a much better game this Saturday. Round 7 vs Wests We travelled to Concorde again this week for our 2nd match of the season against Wests, a club we usually enjoy playing, and the boys had a much improved performance this week with some moments of absolute brilliance and bravery. However this week the opposition team included the largest, most aggressive boy they have ever played (he made most of our dads look small). In what could have been a generally good and fair game this super huge player had a very large impact until he was sent from the field for repeated dangerous tackles, unfortunately the last of these (at least 4) injured one of our players. Special mention must go to Jack, Connor and Ryan J, three of the smallest boys playing who tackled superbly on quite a few occasions, showcasing the talent of the little guy. Also to Michael for his outstanding tackling and attack - resulting in a fantastic try. We also must mention Ethans never give up chase and try saving tackle, all efforts resulting in very loud applause and cheers from Norwest supporters and families, who had endured quite a day seeing their boys treated unsportsmanlike by one player. You will see from the photos attached the David and Goliath struggle in this game and our moments of triumph.

Round 5 vs Merrylands

R E P O R T S

Its been a long time waiting but our team finally posted a win in a competition game. On Saturday our boys faced Merrylands who we narrowly lost to in an exciting encounter over a month ago and after a tough encounter against Dundas opens last weekend, we were ready for a win. Our boys learned some tough lessons last weekend against Dundas and it was very satisfying to see them take those lessons to heart and open the game with two brilliantly constructed team tries. Tho Merrylands fought back hard posting some good tries of their own the boys held strong and found a plethora of opportunities for our backs out wide. A well-earned win supporting our every player counts team approach. Well done boys! Round 6 vs Rooty Hill On Saturday the 16s were well beaten by a better Rooty Hill team. Struggling with numbers all week the boys had to start the game with 13 players on the park. As per usual the boys hearts kept them in it until 20mins in we were able to field a full complement. Juggling positions around, to make a team, hurt us against the talented Raptors. Hopefully with luck we can train with a full squad and win some more games.
