District Profile Lying in the northern tip of Kerala bounded by the Western ghats in the east and Arabian

sea in the west, twelve rivers flowing across its terrain, Kasaragod is an enchanting beauty of Nature's creations. Climate Temperature The diversity of the physical features results in a corresponding diversity of c limate. The climate of the district is classified as warm, humid and tropical. The average maximum temperature is 31.2oC and minimum is 23.6oC. Though the mean maximum temperature is only around 90oF, the heat is oppressive in the moisture laden atmosphere of the plains. Humidity is very high and rises to about 90 percent during the south-west monsoo n. The annual variation of temperature is small, the diurnal range is only about 10 oF. Rainy Season The mean annual rainfall of the district is 3581mm, which is highest in the stat e. (The state average is 3063). The south west monsoon starts towards the end of May or the beginning of June, heralded by thunder-storms and hold till September when the monsoon fades out. October-November brings the north-east monsoon. Out of the total rainfall, the months June, July & August experience 2/3 of the quantity. Rainfall during the year 2001 in mm. Total Rainfall - 3626 mm. Summer & Winter Dry weather from December to February. March to May is the hot season. The coolest months of the year are January-February.

Geography The district is marked off from the adjoining areas outside the State by the Wes tern Ghats which run parallel to the sea and constitute an almost continuous mou ntain wall on the eastern side. The Ghats dominate the topography. The coastline is fringed with low cliffs alternating with stretches of sand. A few miles to the interior, the scene changes and the sand level rises towards the barrier of the Ghats and transforms into low red laterite hills interspersed with paddy fields and coconut gardens. Based on physical features, the District falls in to three natural division. The low land, bordering the sea, the mid land consisting of the undulating country and the forest, clad high land on the extreme east. There are mainly

four types of soils namely, sandy, sand loam, laterite and hill or forest soil. The sandy and the sandy loam soils exist as a continuous narrow belt all along the Western coast about 20 Kms in width. The land of the district can be categorized in detail as follows. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) Steeply slopy hill lands, Upland plateau, Deep gorges with steep side slopper and very narrow valleys. Border valleys bounded by subdued hills, Coastal plain and marine plain, and Nearly level lowland plains along the coastal plain.

RIVERS There are 12 rivers in this district. The longest is Chandragiri (105 kms) originating from Pattimala in Coorg and embraces the sea at Thalangara, near Kasargod. The river assumes its name Chandr agiri from the name of the place of its source Chandragupta Vasti; where the gre at Maurya emperor Chandragupta is believed to have spent his last days as a sage . The second longest river is Kariankod (64 kms), across which a dam is being buil t at Kakkadavu. Shiriya (61 kms), Uppala (50 kms), Mogral (34 kms), Chithari (25 kms), Nileshwar (47 kms), Kavvayi (23 kms), Manjeswar (16 kms), Kumbala (11 kms), Bekal (11 kms) and Kalanad (8 kms) are the other rivers. These rivers provide ample irrigation facilities.

CULTURAL HERITAGE Kasargod offers a variety of patterns of arts which speaks volumes about the ric h cultural heritage of regions. The spectacular pageant of Theyyam deities impa ssinated - raises Kasargod into a land of fabulous fantasies. The symphonic mel ody created by Yakshgana, Kambala (buffallo race), Cock fight etc. of the Thulan ad culture, thrilling along with poorakkali, Kolkali, Duff Mutt, Oppana etc. enc hants the visitors. LANGUAGES Kasargod is a land of different languages. The languages without script are also used here. Tulu, Kannada, Malayalam, Konkani, Tamil and other local languages a re the popular. VARIOUS CULTURE IN KASARGOD DISTRICT The Hindus, Muslims,and the Christians, live side by side, each influencing and getting influenced by the culture of the other. Communal harmony and religious t olerance are the noteworthy characteristics of the people. Though the people speak different languages there is no barrier on the cultural unity. Mosques, Temples and Churches stand side by side as symbols of communal c ohesion.

The major religious groups are the Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Hindus Brahmins, Nairs, Ambalavasis, Thiyyas, Yadavas and Kammalas are the major divisi ons of Hindu community. Thiyyas of the district are known as Belechappad and Poo jaris. Yadavas are also known as Maniyanis. There are divisions among the Brahmi ns such as Shivally, Havyak, Karhada and Kota. Shivally Brahmins consists of Agi thaya, Kayarthaya, Kadanbalithaya, Kaikillaya, Ballullaya, Punichithaya etc. Bha ts are known as the Havyak Brahmins. The Gouda Saraswatha Brahmins or the Konkin is, can also be seen here, small in number. Nambiar, Kurup etc. are the sub divi sions of the Nair community. Kammalas are artisans like Thattan (goldsmith), Per umkollan (blacksmith), Asaris (carpenters). Muslims The Muslims of the district are very pious and they follow rigid religious custo ms. The family background and daily life of the muslims are conducive to a devou t life. In addition to the ritualistic prayers, individually or in congregation special prayers are offered on special occasions such as the funeral, Ramzan nig hts and during Ramzan and Bakrid festivals. Special supplications are made at th e death anniversary of Saints which is known as Uroos. The purdha system is obse rved more strictly here by Muslim women than in any other parts of the State. Christians The Christians dominate eastern portion in the district. They are settled mainly in the eastern hilly areas. They are settlers from the southern parts of Kerala . During the year 1943 the first settlers came to Rajapuram. The main Christian settlement are Thanapuram, Palavayal, Vellerikkundu, Cherupuzha, Bedadukka, Puli ngome, Karivedakam, Malom, Balal, Kanhiradukkam, Kadumeni, Mallakkallu, Panathad y, and Cheemeni. These hilly terrains are converted into rich plantations by the se people.

Kasaragod district was part of South Kanara district of Madras state prior to th e States reorganisation on 1st November 1956. On that day Kasaragod taluk was ma de part of the re-organised Malabar district of Kerala state. Two months later o n 1st January 1957, the present region covered by Kasaragod district became a pa rt of the newly formed Cannanore (later renamed as Kanoor) district. Along with it the erstwhile Kasaragod taluk was bifurcated into Kasaragod and Hosdurg taluk s. In 1984 Kasaragod became a new district with Kasaragod town as its headquarte rs. Kasargod became part of Kerala following the reorganisation of states and formation of Kerala in November 1,1956. The district was Kasargod Taluk in Kannur District. The formation of Kasargod District was a long felt ambition of the people. It is with the intention of bestowing maximum attention on the

development of backward area, Kasaragod district was formed on 24th May, 1984 as per GO.(MS)No.520/84/RD dated 19.05.1984. With the formation of the district, comprising the erstwhile Kasargod and Hosdur g Taluks. It has become possible to develop this area fruitfully. Kasargod consists of the hill tracts villages in the eastern side and costal villages in the western side and it is the 14th district in the State. For revenue administration, Kasargod district is divided into two taluks, five f irkas, and 75 villages. (See Location & Maps). The only Revenue Division in the district is Kasargod and the office is at Kanha ngad. The Collectorate functions at Vidyanagar in Chengala Panchayath, which is 5 Kms. from Kasargod town. ii) District Treasury The District Treasury is located in the Civil Station and the Six Sub Treasuries are at Kasaragod Town, Hosdrug, Chattanchal, Nileshwar,Vellarikundu and Manjesh war. EMPLOYMENT In order to mitigate the unemployment problem, two Employment Exchanges are func tioning in the district. Agriculture forms the mainstay of the population of the district. The soil in th e three natural divisions generally fall under three types. In the highland reg ion it is laterite. In the midland, the soil is a red ferruginous loam of lateri te origin with an admixture of clay and sand. The coastal strip is sandy. Divers ity of crops and heterogeneity in cultivation are the key notes of agriculture here. The eastern tract comprises of forests and hilly areas. The forests comprise of a variety of timber with teak and other plantations. The hilly areas are mostly cleared and put to private cultivation; the important crops being rubber, cashew and ginger. In the skeletal plateau areas, cashew trees are cultivated, while in some patches, arecanut, pepper and cocoa are grown. In the coastal tract, pad dy, coconut, arecanut, cashew, tobacco, vegetable and tapioca are cultivated. Compared to total production of state, district share is Tobacco - 100% Arecanut - 26% Cashew nut - 16%

CENTRAL PLANTATION CROPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CPCRI)

The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute is an establishment having natio nal importance. With headquarters at Kudlu, five kms. north of Kasargod, the CPC RI has regional stations at Kayamkulam, Vittal and Kozhikode. Its research centr es are at Peechi, Palode, Hirehally, Appangala, Mohithnagar and Kehikuchi. There are seed farms at Kidu and Sathigode, one field station at Thrissur and a World Coconut Germplasm Centre at Sipighat. The objectives of the CPCRI are to serve as national forum for improving genetic potential of plantation crops, to conduc t basic and applied research on various aspects of these crops, to co-ordinate r esearch works being done by other institutions and agencies in the country, to s erve as an information centre on all matters pertaining to these crops, to produ ce genetically superior planting materials and to carry out all India coordinate d cropping improvement project on coconut, arecanut, spices and cashew nut. CPCR I was established in 1970 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Resear ch is carried out on various branches of Agricultural Sciences such as Gardening , soil chemistry, plant production, microbiology, plant diseases, cattle rearing , pisci culture, etc. TxD, Mangala arecanut, new species of cardamom, turmeric and cashew, mixed crop and multi-crop system, etc. are some of the contributions of the CPCRI for the d evelopment of agriculture. The most remarkable venture is tissue culture in coco nut. Research on various diseases of coconut, areacanut, cashew, pepper and fiel d crops has given better yields. Technology Assessment and refinement through Institution Village Linkage CPCRI is one of the ICAR institute implementing the NATP project on Technology A ssessment and refinement through Institution Village Linkage which is having emp hasis on ensuring farmer participation in agro eco system analysis, identificati on and prioritization of problems and deciding appropriate technological interve ntions. Under the project different interventions have been implemented in farme rs in different micro farming situations. Agricultural Technology Information Centre Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) is established at CPCRI, Kasar agod to provide the required technology information, diagnostic and advisory ser vices and supply of quality planting material to farmers through a single window delivery system. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) The Krishi Vigyan Kendras functioning under CPCRI at Kasaragod and Kayankulam ca ter to the training needs of farmers of Kasaragod and Alappuzha Districts respec tively. Farmers are immensely benefited through the vocational training programm es, front line demonstrations and on farm testing in the farmers fields and othe r technology transfer activities organised by the KVKs. Production and distribution of planting materials Quality planting materials of coconut, arecanut and cocoa are produced and distr ibuted to farmers from the various centres of CPCRI. Farmers can write to CPCRI in advance for seedlings and can procure the same in person on intimation. Consultancy Services The Institute offers project consultancies to individuals on nominal charges on the establishment and maintenance of gardens of coconut, arecanut and cocoa, far ming systems, pests and disease management and post harvest technology.

Library and Information Centre CPCRI library has a collection of 50,000 documents pertaining to palms and Cocoa and subscribes to 225 journals. All documents of the library are classified, c atalogued and indexed and the process of computerization using Library software is in progress. Library at the Headquarters and at regional stations provide do cumentation services to scientists, research workers, students, farmers and pers onnel from plantation crops industry
