WHERE DO CERTIFICATE HOLDERS WORK?

There is ever-growing demand for native or near-native English speakers trained to teach the language both in the
United States and abroad. Community colleges, universities, private language schools, adult education language
programs, and private businesses all need qualified English teachers. Individuals from all walks of life in the United
States and other countries also hire trained personal tutors to help them learn English.

WHAT IS THE REPUTATION OF THE NEW SCHOOL CTE PROGRAM?
Graduates of The New School Certificate in Teaching English secure jobs teaching in adult education programs, private
language schools, and colleges both here and abroad. Some graduates become coordinators of ESL programs at local
community-based organizations. In addition, graduates are highly marketable as private tutors, often drawing on their
knowledge and skills from other fields (many graduates are career changers from finance, advertising, law, and health
care, etc.). About 20 percent go on to earn the MA in TESOL.

Most alumni of the program are currently working in the field in paid and volunteer positions. Many certificate holders
ZKRDOUHDG\KDYHDPDVWHUVGHJUHHLQD different field have been hired for community college programs. To help
students and alumni find positions, the Department of English Language Studies maintains a list-serve on which all job
announcements received by the department are posted. Also, every fall, we offer a workshop on interview skills and
where to look for jobs.
