Don Meyer- Tape #6 Developing Your Post Players

Keys to Post Play 1. Heart 2. Hands 3. Head *Must have these things 1. Be aggressive 2. Love contact- must like to bruise it up! 3. Want the basketball- have a desire to get the ball in your hands 4. Must want to score (once you receive the ball) 5. Communication- communicate by pointing where you want the ball, demand the ball. Be a director6. Be strong, play strong 7. Be in condition- must be able to get up and down the floor 8. Be a worker- the best post players are blue collar posts 9. Be a good free throw shooter- most are weak- Chamberlain 50% FT shooter 10. Play without fear- of injury, missing shot, etc Basic Post Positioning: *Wide base, feet wider than shoulders, have your knees bent. *Get both hands up, have your back straight *If you want to receive the ball on the bounce, get you hands down *Passer is telling you where you are open by where he passes the ball *Whichever side the defender goes to, you want to sit on his front leg *If defender is fronting the post, get both arms up so the offensive player is not called for a push off. Getting open in the post: *Have an inside-outside approach *Great post players will score without the basketball *Great post players will score off of a teammates missed shot *In Meyers thinking, if his postmen can be guarded one on one and from behind, then they are in serious trouble. They need the kind of post player that is going to make teams double-triple team him. Don Nelson technique: *Big man faces the lane (defender usually plays inside) and spins inside and seals him strong.

*You can also just take the man away (defender goes with you) and then come right back. *You dont have to move a lot in the post until the ball is across half court. Let the ball get into scoring position. *If your man is guarding you low toward the baseline, take him lower and then V-cut *If your man is guarding you higher, take him higher, then V-cut and back cut into the post position. *Post players that receive a lot of attention: -Bring the basketball back to the great offensive post player. Take the ball away from the post, then bring it back. From the top, post can duck in. On the swing from top to the wing, post will be open. -Concept of using the screen to get an outstanding post open. Flare screen, and then seal the next available man Safety receiving the basketball: Meyer- You can hide a lot of things in basketball but you cant hide someone who is not a good receiver of the basketball Tennis ball drill catch the ball with your eyes- Meyer ball in the air feet in the air *Use one tennis ball, then two tennis balls. Pass them with a flick pass. *Then use basketballs- one basketball, two basketballs, also, switch up the basketballs (one is a bounce pass and the other is a flick pass) Step Slide Drill- use step slide ball rolling ball to the player, make it challenging. - have a wide base
