Edinburgh, a thriving cosmopolitan capital with its own parliament and an impressive array of cultural institutions and festivals, including the Edinburgh International Film Festival, provides an ideal location for the on-campus residential part of this course. The residential week will be based at Merchiston Campus in the lively Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. The campus is well catered for by local amenities including cafes and bars, and is a short walk from the beautiful Meadows Park. Merchiston Campus, with its unique blend of past and present, is home to modern facilities as well as the 13th century Napier Tower.

Whats involved?
Youll learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, studio and newsroom sessions and through independent study. Learning will take place during one on-campus residential week as well as in an international virtual learning environment. The on-campus residential week will take place at the beginning of each of the first Trimester. Full lecture materials will be made available online for students who cant attend the on-campus residential week, for example due to problems with travel arrangements. If studied on a fulltime basis, this course can be completed within an academic year. You have the opportunity to engage in part-time studies, in which case the duration of studies should not exceed twelve trimesters. Part-time students will be guided by a tutor to put together an individualised programme of study. TRIMESTER 1 Cross-Platform Journalism and Media Practice: You will analyse your own professional practice in the context of a convergent media world and learn to refashion your content for audiences across a wide range of platforms, including online, broadcast, print, social media and mobile platforms. You will engage in the production of live rolling cross-platform news in a virtual global newsroom and will have the opportunity to acquire new professional skills, i.e. broadcast skills for print journalists or online skills for broadcasters. Global Current Affairs across Cultures: You will learn about cross-cultural issues in journalism and also reflect on different forms of film and media practice around the globe. You will compare approaches to reporting from different world regions and develop a critical understanding of key issues in global current affairs and international news. You will be introduced to the work of foreign correspondents and learn to develop strong content yourself, and to adapt it for a range of global audiences. Leadership & Entrepreneurship in the Media: You will be introduced to different cultural approaches to leadership and entrepreneurship. You will explore the potential for innovation in your professional practice and reflect on ways to shape the future industry. In support of this, you will compare and critique different political, economic, regulatory, ethical and legal contexts in which media practitioners around the globe operate. With the support of an industry mentor, you will identify strategies to progress your personal career and strengthen your personal leadership style. You will be encouraged to develop entrepreneurship, creative leadership and to become an initiator of change. TRIMESTER 2 Specialist Journalism (choose three of the following options): Global Business and Finance Reporting: You will be introduced to global financial markets and to reporting international financial affairs for a range of media platforms and a variety of global audiences. An experienced business correspondent will help you hone your practical financial reporting skills. Investigative Journalism: You will be introduced to advanced tools for investigative journalism and will reflect on cross-cultural differences in the application of these methods to a variety of media platforms. An experienced investigative journalist will help you engage in the practice of investigative journalism.

Documentary Film Production: You will be introduced to a variety of documentary formats and learn to select narrative style, film language and interviewees suitable for different target audiences. An experienced filmmaker will introduce you to research, production and commissioning process and help you develop your own project. Professional Industry Placement: You will expand your professional horizon by gaining experience in an unfamiliar sector of the industry. You can opt to gain experience of a new media platform or unfamiliar specialism; you can choose to acquire cross-cultural skills by working overseas, or you can opt to shadow someone in a leadership role. The professional placement totals three weeks, will be accompanied by a reflective assignment designed to embed and underpin your learning, and is supported by a course tutor.

TRIMESTER 3 Production Dissertation: You will be challenged to push the boundaries of your current professional practice as you produce a substantial piece of journalism or a major media project. In doing so, you will showcase advanced professional skills as well as the ability to innovate and practice creative leadership. You can produce a documentary film, a themed website, a series of videos for mobile platforms, or pilot a new magazine; the scope of possibilities is open to your initiative. The production project will be accompanied by rigorous critical analysis that demonstrates the ability to engage in thought leadership.

Entry requirements
You need an Honours degree, and you need to have worked for a minimum of one year as a journalist, media practitioner, communications specialist, information officer, writer, producer or in another suitable role in the media. Instead of an Honours degree, you may have a degree-equivalent qualification. Substantial experience gained in the journalism, communications and media industries can be counted in place of an Honours degree. Every applicant will be asked to provide evidence of industry experience as well as of suitability for the degree, in form of a portfolio of copy, or a showreel. Overseas applicants who are not native English speakers need to provide evidence of language skills equivalent to IELTS 7 in all tested areas. Applicants with IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 in one or more of the tested areas may be allowed to enrol on the course providing you enrol on an accompanying English language module, which you will need to pay for separately. This module will help you progress your skills to IELTS 7.0 level by the time you graduate.
