LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL

Date: October 07, 2010. Sir Abdul Aleem Siddqui Course Teacher,

Sir, We are submitting the assignment report of Computer Orientation Packages. The report is based on the topic Bus Service using GPS and E-ticketing. This report is based on bus service using new global positioning system and electronic ticketing. We are grateful to your guidance in the project, without which this could not be completed. PREFACE

All praise is to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, the Beneficent, the Merciful and every Grace of Allah is on His Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), who is always a source of knowledge and guidance for humanity as a whole. The technology side is very vast and always in the evolving process and you never knows what will come next. So the report has been limited to a large extent while preserving the real, basic and fundamental contents. The report is divided into six chapters. At the start we give the introduction of project with our mission and introduction to Zab Bus Service. In the second Chapter we give the prologue to new technologies that we are planning to use in Zab Bus Service. In the third chapter we discuss this system with old system. Also in this chapter we discuss advantages and flaws of Zab Bus Services. In the forth chapter we share the idea to overcome the flaws and to improve the system and quality of services. It is a matter of great satisfaction and pleasure for us to present this report, as our work in this report had been well-received and appreciated by all concerns. The report is written in a simple and easy guiding way.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

With a deep sense and profound gratitude, we take this opportunity to convey our sincere thanks to Almighty Allah who has bestowed upon us a minute portion of His knowledge, courage and strength by virtue of which we were able to accomplish this challenging task. We are highly indebted to our course instructor, Abdul Aleem Siddqui, Adjunct Faculty, Szabist, Karachi, for his untiring assistance, unrelenting guidance and unrelenting moral support. We would also like to extent our thanks to our classmates and friends outside the university who encouraged us and whose co-operation enabled us to complete this report. CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Mission

Introduction to Zab Bus Service

1.1 Mission:
The overriding objective is for ZAB Bus Service to provide public transportation services to a wide variety of population/market segments, both residents of and visitors to the City. More specifically, this project will be the keystone for the long-term development of a region-wide comprehensive urban public transportation system serving all the eighteen town of the City.

1.2 Introduction to Zab Bus Service:

Our objective is to start a bus-service which facilitates the local people by making good use of some latest technology. Karachi is a city with a population of nearly 20 million and big percentage of people living here travel in buses. The number of buses present till date is not enough to cope up with such a large population and not surprisingly a large proportion are forced to travel standing. All buses will have GPS installed in it along with the latest tracker system. The passengers will also be facilitated by the introduction of E-ticketing.

CHAPTER 2

Related Work

GPS E-Ticketing

2.1GPS:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system that provides reliable location and time information in all weather and at all times and anywhere on or near the Earth when and where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver.

2.2 E-Ticketing:
An electronic ticket or e-ticket is used to represent the purchase of a seat on passenger transportation, usually through a website or by telephone, or sometimes through ticket offices.

CHAPTER 3

Analysis

Current System Advantages of Zab Bus Service Flaws in Zab Bus Service

3.1 Current System:

As no clear urban transport policy exists in Pakistan, any individual can buy a vehicle and ply on the route and become a member of the urban transport operation. This policy is considered to have destroyed the entire transport system of the country. There are three main stakeholders of urban transport service in Pakistan namely, Users which are vulnerable to public transport, Operators (providers) which are the owners of the vehicles and Regulators. The regulators category includes government agencies like traffic police and transport management institutes. In

order to provide an efficient, economical and centrally well managed transportation system at city level the role of these stakeholders need to be studied in detail. Presently, operators and regulators blame each other for the current worst condition of public transport and consequently commuters face worst public transport. Due to lack of understanding on how to improve the situation, the gap between transportation needs and the means to satisfy the requirement is continually increasing in the cities of Pakistan. Despite the huge investment in road infrastructure, large cities are facing an ever increasing problem of traffic jam, accidents, air and noise pollution. One of the basic problems of the Karachi bus service lays in mismanagement particularly the failure of regulating, monitoring and enforcement agencies. A number of agencies are responsible for administration, but lack of coherent and focused policy, affects the ability to function effectively. Bus operators struggle to survive under the prevailing conditions of rising costs and on-road competition. The existing public transport service in Karachi has limited ability to cope with the increasing travel demand of those who depend on it. 3.2 Advantages of Zab Bus Service: Zab Bus Service is uses latest technology to cover most of the flaws of old system. Core advantages of Zab Bus Service are: Ease of navigation Searching a nearby area becomes easy Alternate routes can be used with ease in cases of traffic jam in a certain area The usage of alternate routes can save a lot of time. The tracker system can easily track the exact location of the bus which can be beneficial in case a bus faces an emergency. This can also be used to find out the estimated time, the bus will take, to reach the next stop The tracker system helps keeping a check on driver. Comfortable Seats High Quality Service. Well maintained Busses. Less Polluted Busses. Awareness of new technology. This system will bring great change in City.

3.3 Flaws in Zab Bus Service: Nobody is Perfect no system or service is perfect because idea or technology we implemented have some side effects with their good points. This system has also some flaws Obstacles like buildings can block or deflect the signals making it unreliable

In Pakistan not all people have access to the internet hence E-ticketing could prove costly. The introduction of GPS and other technologies needs to be maintained regularly and this can effect on service cost. Drivers need to be trained in order to cope up with the new technology.

CHAPTER 4

Suggestions and Recommendations

Suggestions 4.1 Suggestion:

Suggestion should be warm welcome to improve the service and make it easier for the people. Few suggestions to improve this system are as follows: The prices should be close to the price charged by the existing public buses 3D GPS device should be used in order to maintain reliability and accuracy Recently, petrol is becoming expensive. To overcome this factor, CNG kits should be installed in all buses to avoid more liabilities as CNG is a cheaper fuel as compared to petrol. Booking of tickets should also be done from their mobile phone via sms. Schedule should be send to regular customers via sms or email.

CHAPTER 5

Conclusion

Conclusion 5.1 Conclusion:

Before ZAB bus-service was introduced: Passengers have to wait for long for their bus You are lucky enough if you find an empty seat in a public bus In a city like Karachi where traffic jams are a part of daily routine, an inexperienced driver might face problems finding an alternate route. A driver might stay at a stop for long as per his wish due to lack of check and balance of drivers After ZAB bus-service was introduced: Passengers do not have to wait for so long for their in case if theyre getting late for their destination Passengers save a lot of time escaping all threats of traffic jams. All thanks to the GPS Finding an empty seat is frequent for most of the passengers ensuring a comfortable travel

Key to Success:

E-ticketing Air conditioning. Punctuality. Tracking System (track your desired bus via sms/email).
