Knowing in this case includes: the ability to think about and integrate technology to assist in the teaching and learning process; the ability to collaborate with other educators in utilizing educational resources, participate in professional organizations, develop and teach units that leverage the culture and everyday tools and experiences of students; and most importantly, the ability to focus on how different technologies serve learning goals as opposed to narrow training on particular tools. In short, an approach to technology that puts learning first, in order to prepare new teachers who can think flexibly about how to achieve their goals with the help of technological tools. You are invited to engage in a thoughtful exploration of some of the possibilities that exist for putting educational technologies in the service of your teaching and your students learning. I am interested in your thoughts, investigations, discoveries and concerns regarding these key questions: Where do you see possible benefits from the use of technology in your teaching? Where are you seeing potential sources of problems or concern as you contemplate integrating technology into your teaching? What seem to be important questions to be asking yourself as you consider the place of technology in your teaching? As you explore new technology tools, do design work, and explore the technology resources at your school and in your classroom (and see how they re used), what educational purpose(s) do you see technology serving? Where are the missed opportunities? What is the use of technology enhancing? What is it making possible that might not otherwise be possible? Conversely, what is/might it be

constraining or inhibiting? Do you see the use of technology creating problems or complications? How might your use of technology as a learning tool offer your students ways of expressing themselves, making useful connections, or of expanding the learning space? Where are the dangers, limitations, or potential pitfalls? To facilitate a rich engagement with questions like these, we are going to be learning about and using a variety of tools. Some of these tools are traditional technology learning tools, while others are more innovative and out-of-the box. Each of you will create a Kidblog to chronicle your reflections on your work in Teaching with Technology. You ll each have some in depth, hands-on experience in utilizing specific technology tools. In addition, you will also be introduced to some key professional organizations and resources, and you will be asked to get involved in these organizations via social media and other technology tools. Finally, as a result of the impact of digital tools on schooling, you will have opportunities to learn about and how to teach and learn in virtual schools.Ultimately gaining an appreciation for how technology tools can help generate opportunities for inclusion, expansion, access, and engagement in learning for students, parents, and the greater community. It's important that you understand that your instructor is exploring (and even experimenting) right along with you. These new tools offer exciting opportunities for educators, and we want you to be exposed to them, but I also want you to keep your eyes on the prize: your students. My sincere hope is not that you necessarily become an avid technology user, but that whatever you do with regard to educational technology, you make your decisions thoughtfully, and I hope to model that kind of engagement in Teaching with Technology. Standards Met: This course meets ALL the National Technology Standards for Teachers and Students (http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=NETS ), the Michigan Seventh Standard (technology), as well as the teacher education principles for technology at the University of Michigan (see below). Technology in Teacher Education Principles for University of Michigan School of Education Student Learning (SL) The pre-service teacher uses tools and media to qualitatively enhance interactions between and among teachers, students, and content in the following ways: 1. Scaffold students learning and individualize instruction 2. Create opportunities for exploration, feedback, revision, and reflection 3. Create opportunities for research, collaboration, and engaging in consequential tasks 4. Represent and visualize complex systems and problems

Professional Learning (PL) The pre-service teacher uses tools and media to critically examine and enhance one s practice in the following ways: 1. Collect and analyze records of teaching practice 2. Seek up-to-date tools and media both inside and outside of the school environment 3. Build and maintain professional networks of peer support Digital Participation (DP) The pre-service teacher promotes and models the use of technology with students, peers, and stakeholders in the following ways: 1. Model responsible use of technology and digital citizenship 2. Promote and create opportunities for students equitable access to technology 3. Evaluate tools and media based on established theories of learning 4. Participate in online communities and maintain a professional online identity Professional Workflow (PW) The pre-service teacher uses technology in their day-to-day activities in the following ways: 1. Prepare and manage materials for teaching 2. Communicate with stakeholders 3. Collect and manage student information

Course Structure Thematic units in education technology structure the course, each unit have two to four activities that combine to meet the objectives for that particular unit. The units build on another over the course of one year. This course uses a blended learning approach, where half of the class sessions will meet face-to-face and half of the sessions will meet virtually (on Elluminate). Summer: 1. SUMMER, FALL, WINTER, SPRING PROJECTS: Summer (projects A)


PROJECT A: Professional Podcast (20 points) (Standards Met: DP, PL; NETS-T 1, NETS-T 3, NETS-T 4, NETS-T 5) Congratulations! We have our own class Internet radio show. The show is titled This Week in MAC and it will be produced by 2 different students each week between August 2011 and December 2011. The podcast will be 30 minutes each week and it will be LIVE. When it is your week to be in charge of the podcast, you and your partner will be able to select ANY educational topic of your choice (it does not have to be related to technology) for the 30 minute broadcast. Requirements: y Produce ONE podcast between August-December 2011 y Your podcast should stay on theme and be conducted in a professional manner y Podcast should involve the chat room, bring in possible guest speakers, and be engaging y Post a link to your podcast and a short reflection in your Kidblog y Listen to and participate in the Live chat for at least 2 other podcasts

Fall (Projects B, C, D, E)
PROJECT BBlog (14 points) (Standards Met: DP, SL; NETS-T 1) You will be required to create your own blog website, which will be used as a reflective journal for this course. Your blog should be a running reflection of the digital resources that we explore in the classroom and how you might use them in your own classroom. Your blog is meant to be an outlet for you to reflect, discuss, and comment on technology-related issues in education. This is YOUR professional blog. Keep in mind that you are creating digital footprints when you post your blog. Please DO NOT post any K-12 student names or identifiers in your posts. In addition, You should also be viewing the other students blog and commenting on their ideas and reflections. Requirements: y Blog post and reflection Projects A, C, D, E, F, G, H, y DUE DATE: June 1st PROJECT C: Conduct Technology in my Placement Survey (10 points) (Standards Met: DP; NETS-T 4) You will conduct a survey about the technology in your student teaching placement. The survey will focus on the technology resources available to you in your student teaching placement, legal issues with technology in schools, and guidelines for using technology in your teaching. You will be required to post the results via the Google survey and a reflection on the results on your Kidblog. th DUE DATE: November30 , complete Google survey online and post reflection in your Kidblog PROJECT D: Virtual Webinar Social Studies (30 points) (Standards Met: SL, PW; NETS-T 1, NETS-T 2, NETS-T 5) Virtual schooling is on the rise, and there is a good chance that you will have opportunities throughout your teaching carrier to teach with virtual resources. To prepare for being a virtual teacher, you and a partner will create a live webinar on a web resource for teaching and learning in social studies (more information will be provided in your social studies methods course). Webinars are interactive class sessions. Your webinar will last 30 minutes. Requirements st th y Create and conduct a virtual webinar in Elluminate between Oct 1 2010-Dec 15 2011 y Participate in 2 virtual webinars y The webinar will be interactive (participants will also have a role not just a static lecture) y Brief discussion time should be included in the webinar

y Post reflection on Kidblog DUE DATE: Webinar should be conducted between September 2011-December 18th 2011, and a reflection should be posted on Kidblog. PROJECT E: Web2.0 Screencast (Standards Met: NETS-T 2, NETS-T 3) In the Fall you will conduct a webinar on a web2.0 tool for teaching social studies. After you learn how to use the tool, you will create a screencast tutorial for your classmates on how to use the tool. You will post a link to your screencast in your Kidblog as well as a reflection on the screencasting experience.Requirements: y Screencast should explain how to use the web2.0 tool y Screencasts should be more than 3 and less than 12 minutes y Screencast should be narrated with audio y Screencast should be posted in your Kidblog DUE DATE: Screencasts should be posted by December 20th

Winter (Projects F, G)
PROJECT F: Google Student Survey (15 points) (Standards Met: SL, PW; NETS-T 1, NETS-T 2, NETS-T 5) You will be creating a Google survey that you will give to your students (and/or their parents) in the Fall. The purpose of this survey is to get to know your students and their technology background, interest, and skills. You will be developing a lesson plan as a result of the findings from this survey (and a future one). We will begin this survey together and you will complete it on your own. Requirements: y Survey should have at least 6 questions on it. y Survey should be completed by students th DUE DATE: Post results and a short reflection on the results on your Kidblog by Feb 30 PROJECT G: Create and teach a technology-enhanced Lesson (20 points) (Standards Met: SL, DP; NETS-T 1, NETS-T 2, NETS-T 3) Based on the results of yoursurvey (PROJECT F), you will develop and teach a lesson plan that integrates student technologies into your teaching. You can choose to do the technology portion of the lesson inclass, extra credit or for homework. The lesson plan should include; y At least 2 ISTE NETs technology student standards (http://iste.org/nets) y Objectives y Technology Tools y The Process (Daily Activities) y Evaluation y Pictures or Video from lesson o Student products o Teaching the lesson o Students working on the lesson (if possible) DUE DATE: May 15th, post lesson plan, reflection on lesson, and pictures in your Kidblog.

Spring (projects H)
PROJECT H:Professional Education Technology Publication or Presentation (30 points) (Standards Met: DP, PW, PL; NETS-T 1, NETS-T 2, NETS-T 3, NETS-T 5)

You will have a choice of either presenting at the 4T virtual conference or writing a piece for publication in an education technology-related journal, magazine or web-based organization. Choice ONE: 4T Virtual Conference Presentation You will be presenting at a professional virtual education technology conference for K-12 educators. In doing so, you and a possible group of 3 will create a professional workshop for other educators. You will select your own topic (it can be learning a web2.0 tool for teaching, management hints and tips .whatever you prefer), and develop an engaging webinar session (between 45 and 60 minutes) around the topic. Your target audience are K-12 teachers. The conference website is http://4tvirtualcon.com. More details will be given in March class session.DUE DATE: Week of May 20th, create and conduct a virtual presentation during our virtual conference week. Choice TWO: Professional Ed Technology Publication You will have the opportunity to become published education technology writers. You will be writing a 2-3 page how to article and submitting it for publication for one of the following education technology professional magazines such as TechLearning or MACUL Journal. In the March, we will discuss and review the proper writing techniques for these publications and further elaborate on this assignment. Requirements for article: 1) 2-3 pages double-spaced 2) written in the 1st person 3) written as a how to article 4) Submitted to professional publication no later than May 30th 5) Send Liz documentation of your submission (such as an email)

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory at both the Face to Face and Live virtual sessions. For each session that you miss in attendance, you will lose 2 points from your overall grade (it will be subtracted from your total points in May). If you plan on missing a session, please contact Liz beforehand.

Internet Posting Guidelines: 1. Only post things that you would want everyone (in school, at home, in other countries)to know. 2. Do not share personal information. Ask yourself: Could someone find me or the person I am posting about (in real life) based on this information? 3. Think before you post. Ask yourself: What could be the consequences of this post? 4. Know who you re communicating with. Ask yourself: Who is going to look at this, and how are they going to interpret my words? 5. Consider your audience and that you re representing Michigan and your own placement schools, and your professional self. 7. Treat other people the way you want to be treated. When you post a comment, make sure you are respectful. 8. Use appropriate language and proper grammar and spelling. 9. Only post information that you can verify is true (no gossiping). 10. Anytime you use media from another source, be sure to properly cite the creator of the original work. Ask yourself: Who is the original creator of this work? 11. You may not post any media (photos, audio, video, school work) of ANYONE without their WRITTEN or RECORDED VERBAL permission (this includes your students, colleagues,friends, other teachers...etc).
