CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background of study The success of English teaching is affected by some supporting factors such as teachers, students, materials, methods, etc. Method is one aspect that discussed by people in language teaching. It is the practices or procedure used in learning process. Method is one of the ways to achieve the aim of the teaching that never can be separated from teaching or learning process. To achieve the goal of language teaching it also requires professional teacher who can apply a method correctly. Reading is one of the skills that stresses on understanding of words in passage. Reading means the process of communication between reader and author, where the reader reads a text to catch the authors idea. Many of EFL students are able to read English material. When reading a passage, readers just start from the top left-hand corner and finish at the bottom right-hand corner. Their eyes move in straight line and spend word by words, line by lines and paragraph by paragraphs. It is very easy activity. However, not many of them are able to comprehend what they read. Sometime reading can make a readers bored because they dont understand the passage. This is caused by some factors, such as lack of vocabulary, teacher and method that apply in learning process, etc. Method is one of application that can influence teaching learning. Therefore, the writer will apply inductive and deductive method to compare which one more effective in teaching reading and to make reading easy. In this research the writer focus on the method used in teaching

reading comprehension. Whatever methods are use in teaching language, surely, their main aim is to make the students be able to master language skill. In this study, the writer will conduct a research in MTsS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe. MTsS Ulumuddin is Islamic Boarding School that located in a small village. The students in this Islamic Boarding School speak English and Arabic language daily. Therefore, they must be familiar with English language. That is why the writer chooses this school to be the sample This is an example of previous research in a thesis about method that applies in the classroom: Teaching Readings the Student of MTsS Jeumala Amal (A Comparative Study between Two Methods to the Second Year Students) by Isnani in 2003. The result of her thesis is using Direct Method to the students of MTsS Jeumala Amal is more effective than the Audiolingual method. Isnani was compared direct method and audio lingual method. Meanwhile, the writer will compare inductive and deductive method in teaching reading. According to the above statements or idea, the writer wants to know which one more effective of both methods in teaching reading toward the second year students of MTsS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe. Therefore, the writer wants to conduct the research entitle: A Comparative Study between Inductive and Deductive Method in Teaching Reading (A Study at MTsS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe)

B. Research Question Based on the background mention previously, a question needs to be asked. 1. Which one more effective between Inductive and Deductive method? 2. What are the obstacles that faced by students in learning reading by using these two methods?

C. Terminology There are some terms in this study that should be explain in order to avoid misunderstanding, there are: 1. Reading Comprehension This term consist of the words reading and comprehension. Reading is a noun derived from read. It means look at and understand something written or printed1 and comprehension is power to understand something2 so reading is the power to understand something written by looking at and understanding it. In other words, reading with comprehension means reading and understand what has been read. Here, the writer focuses on reading short story. 2. Inductive method Inductive is known as a bottom-up approach. The inductive teaching method is the process goes from specific to the general and may be based on specific experimental learning exercises.3 The exercises here are reading short story and then student answer the questions relate to reading short story. 3. Deductive method Deductive is known as a top-down approach. Deductive teaching method progresses from general concept to the specific application.4 In applying deductive method, the writer also gives exercises. The students ask to write what they understand after reading short story.

C. The Aims of Study The aim of this study is to find out some important targets as follow: 1. To find out which one of both these methods more effective in teaching reading comprehension 2. To know what are students obstacle in learning reading by using these two method

D. Postulates and Hypotheses This study is carried out on the following postulates: 1. Method is the important factor in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching English. 2. Inductive and deductive methods are the method of language teaching that will influence the student in mastering reading comprehension.

Based on the postulate above, there are some hypotheses that have to be proved in this research: 1. Inductive method more effective than deductive method

E. Research Method Data Collecting Procedure To find out the valid data, the writer will conduct some researches, they are: a. Experimental Teaching The writer uses this technique to find out the data which one of these two methods more effective in teaching reading, the writer choose two classes of the second year students of

MTsS Ulumuddin. One served as an experiment class and the other one as a control class. For experimental class the writer applies deductive method. Meanwhile, for the control class the process of teaching was run as usual. b. Test To measure the students of MTsS Ulumuddin abilities in reading the writer will give pre-test and post test. Pre-test test will give before teaching learning process to measure the degree of the students achievement. And post test will give after teaching experiment. The questions are about what are they have read. c. Questionnaire In collecting data, the writer distribute questionnaire to discover students difficulties in studying reading or questionnaire separate to support the data and to know the students opinion.

F. Population and Sample Population is totality of data that will be researcher object in current scope and current time.5 The writer takes MTsS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe as population in this study. Sample is part of population, which can be choosing by using some method or current method.6 The sample of this study the writer takes the second year students of MTsS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe.
