How is Power Supply Data accessed from the DSM? The DSM uses Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to provide power supply data and access to the DSM settings through the network. Management Information Base (MIB) files must be compiled into the SNMP software to provide a map of the data and settings.

The Society of Cable Television Engineers (SCTE) created a standard for monitoring power supply data. They developed MIB files that provide standard locations for power supply and generator data. These MIB files are available at the SCTE web site http://www.scte.org/home.cfm. Alpha has also created a MIB file ATI-TABLESMGMT-MIB.mib for managing the DSM and for accessing power supply data and settings that are not covered by the SCTE standards. The Alpha MIB can be accessed through the Alpha website, or by calling technical support. What monitoring software packages will the DSM work with? The DSM is designed around the SCTE standards and should work with any SNMP management software that can monitor the SNMP MIB variables defined within the standard. Can DSM settings and power supply data be accessed from the front of the power supply? On the front of the DSM is a Local port that allows a user to access power supply and DSM settings using a laptop or computer. A special Local Port Adapter, Alpha part number 745-826-21 must be used to interface between the computer and DSM. Free emulator such as HyperTerminal or Terminal is used as the software for this local connection. Refer to the DSM Installation manual for details on using the Local Port. What is the difference between Single IP and Dual IP? By default, the DSM operates in Single IP mode, which means that the power supply data is only available through the modems IP address. This allows the DSM to be managed within the secure modem network. The DSM can be configured to operate in dual IP mode, where a second IP is assigned on the CPR (public) network. This will allow the power supply data and DSM settings to be available from any place on the public network. Refer to the DSM Installation Manual for more information on Single and Dual IP. Why are there 2 MAC addresses on the DSM? There are 2 MAC addresses on the DSM, the RF MAC and the CPE MAC. The RF MAC is associated with the cable modem and is the only MAC address required for Single IP operation (default). The CPE MAC is used for Dual-IP operation when a second IP address is provided for access to data on the public network. Does the DSM modem need to be specially provisioned? The DSMs RF MAC Address is the network address of the DSMs cable modem. The RF MAC address must be provisioned as a standard cable modem and must allow a CPE connection. Where are the firmware versions displayed? There are two components of the DSM assembly that require firmware, the cable modem and the DSM processor.

Cable Modem: The cable modem firmware information is located via SNMP through sysDescr at OID: 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1 DSM (HMS) Firmware: The firmware for the DSM code can be found through any of the following locations: Local Port: At the command prompt type TEXT. The firmware version will be displayed next to the SysDescr variable and will diaply as ATI P01V1.10.0 indicating firmware version 1.10.0. SNMP: SCTE-HMS CommonVendorInfo: OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.5591.1.3.1.5 What is the DOCSIS configuration file used for? A DOCSIS configuration file is required for all DOCSIS cable modems and provides settings for the cable modem. Settings in the DOCSIS file for the DSM are optional and include setting SNMP security (community strings) for the modem and for upgrading the firmware for the modem. HMS Firmware V1.05 In Single IP mode, community strings must be set in the DOCSIS configuration file in order to access power supply data. HMS Firmware V1.10: In Single IP mode, if the community strings are not set in the DOCIS configuration file, only the Power Supply SNMP MIB varbinds (enterprise.5591 and enterprise.926) will require community strings AlphaGet (Read) and AlphaSet (Read/Write) default. However if the Cable Modem community strings set in the DOCSIS configuration file they will override the DSM defaults. See the DSM Installation Manual for all of the methods for setting community strings. Is there a way to enable all of the options on the DSMs without visiting each site? The DSM Setup File allows automated distribution of communications, power supply and firmware upgrade options to each DSM on the network. See the DSM Installation Manual for instructions on creating the DSM setup file. Can the DSM be set to generate SNMP traps? The DSM supports the SNMP alarms defined in the SCTE-HMS Property MIB. See the DSM Installation Manual for instructions on setting alarms. How is firmware upgraded on the DSM? The DSM uses TFTP to upgrade the power supply monitoring (HMS) firmware and is independent of the modem firmware. The DSM Setup File can be used to automate the upgrade, or an Alpha-provided software application can be installed and managed from any Windows or Sun Solaris server on the DSMs network. See the DSM Installation manual for detailed instructions on upgrading firmware. SNMP data can be accessed from the cable modem but power supply data is unavailable in Single IP

1. Remotely verify power supply data can be viewed through web page. If you can connect to web page but cannot see power supply data then problem is most likely one of 2 things: 1) DEVICE ADDRESS on XM2/GMX is set to 0. DEVICE Address must be set to a non-zero value. Refer to DSM Installation Manual for details on checking and setting DEVICE ADDRESS. 2) 2x9 pin connector on DSM card was damaged during DSM installation and card needs to be repaired If power supply data can be viewed via Analog link on web page then the issue is SNMP network access related, and proceed through the following items. 2. Ensure DSMs Cable Modem has been provisioned to allow a CPE device on the network. 3. Check DOCSIS Configuration file for community string settings: V1.05.0 Community strings must be set in the DOCSIS configuration file in order to access power supply data. V1.10.0 - If community strings are not set in this file then access to Power Supply data will default to AlphaGet (Read) and AlphaSet (Read/Write). Community string settings in the DOCSIS configuration file will override the defaults. Refer to the DSM Installation Manual for details on setting community strings. 4. When polling for power supply data, make sure to start the SNMP walk or SNMP get from inside the SCTE-HMS or ATI enterprise tree (enterprise.5591 or enterprise.926) 5. Check the modems DOCSIS configuration file and ensure the following: 1) If the community strings are specified in the docsDevNmAccessTable, make sure the entries used to access the DSM are entered within the first 4 rows of the table 2) In versions prior to v1.12 the entry docsDevNmAccessIp must not be set to 255.255.255.255 How to troubleshoot the DSM Web page o On version 1.05 firmware port 61520 must be specified, i.e. http://10.2.3.4:61520 o Check Discretes table and ensure HTTP SERVER is enabled (Value 1) o If other devices with web pages exist on same network check to ensure that you can see these devices to ensure that you have web access to that network. o Check with network administer to ensure TCP port 80 is not blocked Power Supply Data is available through the web page and SNMP but individual battery voltages are not The most likely reason for this is mis-wiring of the individual battery harness. Refer to the DSM Installation Manual for detailed installation diagrams. How is the cause of a psMajor Alarm determined? With most transponders a site visit is required by looking at LCD on XM2. With DSM, look at DISCRETES menu through DSM Web page or through SNMP MIB

atiCibDiscTable. The XM2 parameter that caused the alarm will have a value of ALARM. What could keep traps from being received by the SNMP manager? o Disable personal firewalls on computer receiving traps o Disable firewall clients in network interface properties i.e Check Point SecuRemote o Ensure DSM trap table is populated atiMgmtSnmpTrapTable OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.926.1.3.1.1 o Ensure SCTE-HMS propertyTable and discretePropertyTables are configured to sent traps on desired power supply conditions. o Ensure port 162 is not blocked or filtered. Why is the Battery Temperature showing 80 Degrees C when I know the temperature is colder than that? Most likely there is no Remote Temperature Sensor (RTS) installed. Temperature is used as part of the XM2 charging algorithm, so if there is no temperature probe installed then the temperature reading is set high to prevent over-charging of the batteries.
