THE KIWIS AND THE KIWI

The Kiwi is a flightless bird, which prefers subtropical and temperate climate and lives in beech forests. Like most of the birds, the kiwi eats seeds and worms, but what makes it different is that it has nostrils at the end of its long beak, so it has a developed sense of smell. Nowadays, they are known by their nocturnal habits, but this is a consequence of habitat intrusion by predators, including the human being.

The word Kiwi is an onomatopoeia which refers to the birds call. The kiwi bird is a national symbol of New Zealand, but why are the New Zealanders called Kiwis as well? During the First World War the New Zealand soldiers were called Kiwis because they had a Kiwi bird stamp on their badges. But after the War, the denomination remained and the use of it has spread. Thats why, nowadays all the New Zealanders are referred to as Kiwis. A good tip to not confuse the birds and the people is to bear in mind that Kiwi (the bird) is a Maori word, so its plural has no s. Then, if you read or listen to the word Kiwis, probably its referring to the people and not to the bird. But this is not an absolute rule. By Erico Mlo

SHREK FOREVER AFTER

Many of my classmates know the story of Shrek the angry, green and misunderstood but lovely character of the movie SHREK. Sorry, Im not talking about the 4th movie. Im going to talk about a real Shrek. Sadly, the Shrek of our story was put down on the 7th June 2011, a few days ago, his passing away was advised by his doctor because he was old and ill. Like the Shrek of the movie he was a little angry and enjoyed very much his freedom. As a modern ogre, he lived alone in the mountains for too many years. Our Shrek is famous because he became a favourite of the world paparazzi in April 2004, when somebody discovered and brought him to civilization again. He had run away from home 6 years before. He showed the world that it is possible to live free and in good fitness with a can-do attitude and keeping calm under the pressure of the inclement environment of the mountains in the South Island of New Zealand. But, who is the Shrek of our story? Well, he is the most famous New Zealand sheep in the world and the symbol of the quality of New Zealand merino. He did it. His memory lives on in the hearts of many New Zealanders. By Carlos Escandon

Christchurch Earthquakes, 16th June 2011

Natural disasters could happen everywhere, and this time was unfortunately the Christchurch time. But you should remember it also could happen to you. After such an incredible sequence of quakes that started with a 7.1 magnitude shake last September, it was increasingly difficult to predict what would happen next. Two quakes on June 13 surprised the city residents in Christchurch. Even though, there have been more than 7400 quakes since last September. The last two quakes measured 5.7 and 6.3 magnitude, these have led to further damage to dozens of buildings and liquefaction in a lot of streets, but it doesnt stop the efforts of hundreds of people to reconstruct their city. I could see with my own eyes hundreds of people went out of their way to help when everything was chaos. I could have been scared but for me the life continued as normal as always two weeks after, but in fact there are more far-reaching consequences that only you can feel if you put yourself in the shoes of the families that lost their houses, their jobs, their relatives. The most impressive thing was my younger host sister, just 13 year old, my dear Sarah was dismissive of the fear, and went out from home after the earthquake to help her neighbours. I was in panic and she was the one who hugged me and gave me courage, even baked scones for the volunteer army from Australia. Helpfully, the late ski season in the South Island is contributing to the increase in the number of volunteers in Christchurch. Moreover, with all of these disasters the flights have become very much cheaper,

so anyone in all New Zealand could contribute. The inhabitants of Christchurch are still in dire straits, and it is unbelievable the way they keep calm under such pressure. There is a big community that support each other, many of them dont want to leave the city, they want to stay and rebuild their lives, stay with their friends, and recover from their loss together. They want to revive the good old days By Maria Paula Moreno Mendieta and Felipe Pedroni Favoreto

WINTER WONDERLAND
If you dont know where to go this winter, you should think about going to The South Island! Especially Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world! There you can do all kind of activities like bungy jumping, rafting, jet boating, skydiving, skiing and many others. For the people who like thrills, in Queenstown they have the worlds first bungy (Kawarau Bridge) and the highest bungy in NZ (Nevis Highwire - 134m!) for about $150 each. The ski season will start in a few weeks, so it is the best place to go this winter! Even if you dont like adventure activities, you must go there! Queenstown has one of New Zealands most beautiful views, which can be seen from the top of the gondola (a 5-minute walk from central Queenstown). After enjoying Queenstown, you can go to other places in The South Island. One of these places that you can spend a day is definitely Milford Sound! There you will see a stunning landscape and you can do overnight cruises, see a lot of dolphins and waterfalls. By Marilia Girao

Have you ever been there before? This is my homeland. Its a small country in Asia and has the 4000 years of history. We have the Eastern culture in the North and also mixed with a little bit of Western culture in the South. The weather is usually hot everyday but some places are a little cooler and the foods are of many varieties. There are many places you can choose, each of them has its own particular exciting character and its own history. So I would like to name some of them and then you can have a better look at Viet Nam.

MANCHESTER UNITED SECURE DEAL FOR BLACKBURNS PHIL JONES

Jones has finally tied down a move from Elwood Park to Old Trafford. Manchester United have sealed a five-year contact for Blackburn defender Phil Jones in a deal believed to be worth up to 17m. As a result, he is going to play with Rooney, Park, Vidic in the next season. As Manchester United is a world famous football team, many fans were interested in his transfer. Actually, Arsenal and Liverpool also offered Jones a place in the team but he only wanted to move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United lost to Barcelona in the final Champions League twice. They might have realised they needed a faster defender. Jones contributed to Blackburns survival in the Premier League. Why not try typical Brazilian food in New Zealand???

Casa da Sogra is a Typical Brazilian restaurant, located at 12 Remuera Road in Newmarket. There you can taste the main Brazilian dish: rice and beans. But dont worry, Brazilian people dont eat just that, rice and beans is a more like an accompaniment to any dish, so you can eat it with meat and salad. However I need to tell you that the beans could be a little different from the ones in Brazil, probably because of the difficulty of finding them in an uncooked state, exactly like Brazilian people are used to buying in their supermarkets. I recommend trying some pastel, kibe (I know, it`s Arabian food but its very common in Brazil) and some drumsticks. Enjoy it!!!!!!

One of the first person you will meet arriving at Kaplan is Adrian. Hes the Kaplans intern. He work at the reception and hes definitly here to help you during all your school time... Do not esitate if you have a question, he is here! Who are you? (where do you come from ? why are you here ? ) I am Adrian, I am 19. I am from Hamburg in Germany, and I came to NZ to do an internship because I need this to go to the University in Germany. I came in March and I will stay for 6 months before going back to Germany. Before coming to NZ I finished my high school and worked in an elderly people residence for 6 months. Why did you choose to become an intern instead of a student? Because I needed to do an internship before I can apply for University I chose to do this internship instead of studying, but I think both are very good to improve your English. If I have the chance, I might come back as a student. Do you enjoy being an intern at Kaplan? And why? Yep I really enjoy working here. My job is very interesting and challenging as well. And furthermore, all of my colleagues and the staff at Kaplan are very friendly and helpful. I think working at Kaplan is a great experience for me and this experience will be very important for my life in the future. What are your main tasks? (typical work day) My main tasks are helping the students with their daily inquiries, answering the telephone, preparing new student welcome packs, dealing with daily student payments, weekly school induction tour and weekly activity announcements. A funny story? One week, I had to print all the student tests for the next level for all classes. So I printed more than 1000 pages in three days. Luckily I dont have to do this again. What are your plans for the future? I am not sure yet, but probably I will go studying in University when I go back to Germany. Or I will look for a job first to earn some money because even though an internship is a great experience, it is unpaid and I need to get some money again. by Pauline Szwedowski

WHO IS THIS GUY

As all other languages, Kiwis imagination to talk about drunk people is very deep...you can say: "Shes off her face" "Shes hammered" "Shes trashed" "Shes wasted"

A WAR PROOF THEATRE

Do you like movies? Have you seem Hangover part II, X-men First Class and Pirates of the Caribbean? All of these are quite good movies and should be seen. But if you want more then sheer entertainment, if you want something really moving, you must go to the study center right now and rent Mrs Henderson Present. Its based on the true story of the Windmill theatre in London, which never closed the doors during World War II. What makes the movie interesting is the different stories hidden behind the curtains. After the death of her wealthy husband, Laura Henderson (Judi Dench) decides to spend the heritage in an unusual way. She bought an old building, intending to inaugurate a theatre. For this she contracts the showbiz impresario Vivian Van Damm (Bob Hoskins), who is really bossy and has a strong personality. In the beginning, the new enterprise was really successful, but some time later Mrs. Henderson and Van Damm started facing some problems, like the lack of audience. Aiming to make the plays more attractive, Mrs. Henderson comes up with a new idea: naked statuesque woman! In a brilliant performance, Judi Dench brings to Life the eccentric Mrs. Henderson, a brave woman who remains determined even in the face of bombardments and strong pressure by prudish politicians. Overall, this moving story captures the hearts of everyone and makes you laugh and cry at the same time. By Erico Mlo

HANGOVER II
Two years after the events showed in Hangover, the Wolfpack is back, but now running wild in Thailand! The film works because it follows the same formula as the last one with unexpected situations, charismatic characters and the mystery about what happened the night before But what is good for some people can be exhausting for others. We cant say that this is a copy of the first one because it has different situations in a different city, but in the essence it is the same. Someone is missing after a crazy night and they have to remember what they did to find the lost friend.

It is not what you can call a genius screenplay, but still very funny and certainly the most hilarious movie of the year. by Felipe P. Favoreto and Paulo C.C. Duarte

PROBLEM PAGE
ASK MARY .SHELL HELP! Dear Mary I have been going to the gym for 2 months and there is a hot, very attractive instructor. He took my breath away the first time I saw him. I have never been brave enough to say hello to him but I always stop my class to watch him on the bicycle. A few days ago, I went to the gym and I was wandering around when he suddenly glanced at me and our eyes locked. I felt like time stood still, everything was perfect, I heard bells and angels singing. I started sweating and I said nothing because I was afraid of putting my foot in it. He didnt say hello either, but he raised his eyebrows and went away. I melted! Since then I cant concentrate on my exercise. What should I do? Im desperate! Gym Bunny Dear Gym Bunny, Dont forget, the instructor might be shy too. I know it is difficult to say hello, but my advice to you is to take baby steps. For example, the first time you just say hello and the next time, hello, how are you? The third time you could talk about the weather. But remember if you dont do anything you will bitterly regret it. Be brave and have confidence in yourself. Dear Mary, Hi! Ive got a problem. I have a boyfriend. Weve been dating for more than 2 months and Im totally into him. However, there is a problem. Since about a month ago he has started to smell really bad. I asked his best friend to say something to him and tell him to do something about it. And he left me holding the baby!! He told me he was incapable of saying anything to him because he was afraid of putting his foot in it. He thinks he might hurt his feelings and lose his friendship. But I feel the same! What should I do? Di Lemma Dear Di Youre right - you have a problem! You and the best friend are both afraid of hurting your boyfriend. But you should tell your boyfriend directly what you are feeling and thinking. Why dont you try to have a conversation about it? Be honest. If youre a couple you should tell each other your innermost thoughts and help each other to be better. I think he will understand you and thank you. Good Luck! Dear Mary I have been living in New Zealand for 8 months. I used to enjoy New Zealand life, but all my friends have left New Zealand and Im alone now. At first I tried to make new friends but they are not as friendly as my old friends so Im not as close to them. Finally I started smoking. Now cigarettes are my best friends in New Zealand. Actually I dont want to smoke because its not good for my health, but I cant quit because if I do Ill be depressed. Theyve got me over a barrel. I asked my teachers what I could do but they said I had to make good friends and stop smoking. The advice was useless for me. Please help me! Scaredy Cat Dear Scaredy Cat, Have you ever wondered why this is happening to you? Sometimes in life there are times just for ourselves. Times to discover who you are. We must be comfortable with ourselves, enjoy ourselves. Perhaps it is time to be alone. In life, we meet people and we love them. However, how can you love them if you arent able to love yourself? It is time to learn about you. Go out and do the maddest things you have ever done. It is time to do different things and feel different emotions. It is time to be positive and enjoy the lovely heat of a sunny day, eat food you havent eaten in your life. Dance to music and rhythms you havent danced to before. It is time to discover, to feel alive and then youll find there wont be any cigarettes in your pocket anymore.

WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?

Everybody has a fear! What are they afraid of?

I wanted to get into peoples minds. I interviewed 18 Kaplans students and I had flabbergasting results!
Animals: 33.3 % Hopelessness: 16.7% Violence: 16.7 % Losing Important Aspects of Their Life: 16.7 % Learning New Things: 11.1 % Weakness: 5.6 % The vast majority agreed that Animals are dangerous and disgusting. They have real trouble dealing with them. Surprisingly, the minority think that weakness would be the worst feeling they could cope with. Learning new things is scary and they usually think in that before going to bed. Many people are concerned about losing important aspects of their life. Being victims of violence or anything that could hurt them is terrifying as well. Hopelessness is bitterly painful even just thinking about it. In this survey I have found that Childhood has been important to the people and it has left indelible marks on most of the interviewed students. Changes in their life influenced in their fears. Bad experiences were incredible important in the growth of most of the fears. Although all their fears, most of the people want to get over these fears; try to get over them and even they think someday they will. Many students are afraid of trying to get over, however they believe it is possible. Also there are people who strongly believe they wont in their whole life because it is too difficult. Everyone thinks there are plenty of people who have the same fears as them. Half of these students said it was irrelevant because this fact didnt make them feel any better. The other half said that it is a relief to think that they are not the only one who carries with such heaviness. By, Alexia Canon Iriarte

He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up wondering what had happened. She answered the phone, crying, and said she couldnt get out of her room.
