The eating disorder in teenagers Eating disturbance First I will like to define what is eating disorder is an obsession with food and weight that harms a persons well being. People with an eating disorder go to extremes to keep from gaining weight. Eating disturbance share many similar characteristic with eating disorders but is less severe in scope. Eating disturbance usually may be develop during adolescents; they are characterized by distorted eating patterns and usually occur in individuals of normal weight who have a history of dieting and a strong desire to become thin. Sometimes teenagers start this problem out innocently, with only small dietary changes such as eating smaller or larger portions of food, and eventually progress beyond the individual's control. One of the hardest times in a person is the adolescence. This is the time they start to discover who they really are, also to be more independent. Teenagers are in a lot of pressure to success and to fit in, in this process they spend a lot of time worrying about what others think and they desperately try to conform to society's unattainable "ideal" body image. So they believe that if they are thin, they will be accepted in society. Most teenagers buy teen or fashion magazine, the image of the models that appear in those magazine reinforce their believe that in order to be happy, successful and accepted they must be thin. Television shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Americans Next Top Models lead them to believe that they must be thin. Teens watch these show all time and some of they will do anything to try and look like the actresses on those shows. Teenagers need a role model and someone to look up to; unfortunately many of the teenagers choose fashions models and actresses as their role models. In some occasions they paste picture of them all over their room and some will resort to dangerous weight to try and look as their idols. The family environment may also play a big role in teenagers eating disorder. If they are in an environment where emotional, physical or sexual abuse is taking place, also if their parents may be going to divorce, families with alcohol abuse, or in families where feeling are not allow to expressed or

problems are not discussed they may develop an eating disorder to gain a sense of control, to block out painful feelings and emotions. Being raised in a home where the parents are very weight conscious, could lead the teenager to believe that weight and appearance are very important. Many teenage girls learn to diet by watching their mothers. Instead of learning that it's what's on the inside of a person that matters, they learn that appearance and looking good, which to them means being thin, is the most important part of being a woman. Schools should also take an active role in preventing eating disorders by educating the students on the dangers of eating disorders and helping to teach them that in order to succeed in life, their weight does not matter. You do not have to be thin, in order to succeed in the career of your choice. Body dissatisfaction a lead to eating disorders Just being unhappy with their bodies is not enough to lead most teen into eating disorders it takes additional factors, according to a new study. Teens are more likely to have eating disorders when their body dissatisfaction is accompanied by other issues most importantly, a tendency to obsessively examine their bodies and think about how they appear to others. Body dissatisfaction is so prevalent among teenagers in our society that it isnt very useful in identifying teenagers who may have eating disorders. About 3 to 8 percent of teenagers have some type of eating disorder, maybe most teenagers, are dissatisfied with their bodies. This study shows there are factors such as constant body monitoring that strengthen the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating disorders and may help identify teenagers at risk. A teenagers unhappiness about their overall body shape or about specific body parts such as stomach, thighs, or legs and eating disorders. Body surveillance involves actions like continually looking at yourself in the mirror to see how you look. Teenager who does this tends to ignore their

internal feelings and emotions and concentrate on their outward appearance. They think of their bodies as objects. For example, some teenager may ignore their feelings of hunger because they are more concerned with how eating may affect how they appear to others. Some discoverer said that another factor that strengthened the link between body dissatisfaction and eating disorders is neuroticism a personality trait in which people tend to be anxious, nervous, worrying, and insecure.
