DES MOYENS MODERNES POUR DES « MACHINES » À HABITER.

AN EMERGENCY SOLUTION. Having recently joined the editorial board of L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui, Jean Prouvé presented in the 1945 summer issue
dedicated to ‘Emergency Solutions’, the two rapid construction systems that he had patented in 1939: one with an external frame, the other an axial portal
system, illustrated by the erection in the yard of his Nancy workshops of a prefabricated house for those who had lost their homes.
The article details the simplicity of the construction process and the efficiency of its assembly, carried out by three men with a minimum of equipment. For
the magazine’s editors, it was a question of demonstrating the inventiveness and reactivity of French builders, primarily destined for the attention of the
public authorities.

The limited materials available in France immediately after the War meant that builders had to obtain rations from government

Par souci d’économie de matière, la plus grande attention est portée à l’emploi de la tôle, dont le pliage permet de rigidifier les profils déterminés en vue de Bearing in mind the shortage of available materials, great care was given to how the metal sheets were used. Folding the sheets ensured that the profiles

Pourtant, les approvisionnement restant très aléatoires, les Ateliers Jean Prouvé sont contraints à nombre d’adaptations : un essai de poutre faitière en treillis Nonetheless, supply remained unreliable and the Ateliers Jean Prouvé were obliged to make numerous adaptations: a trial using a lattice beam as the ridge

ELEMENTS IN TIMBER. Unable to make the houses entirely out of metal, Jean Prouvé used timber as a temporary substitute for elements that had previously

been developed in steel before the War. The facade panels are composed of two faces of timber decking, made up of pine planks that are slotted together
vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The two faces of the panels are separated by 3 cm-thick timber lathes, allowing for the insertion of fibreglass insulation
in between. These one- or two-metre-wide modules, joined by sheet-metal covering strips that also act as stiffeners, are rigidly connected to the edge beams
of the roof or to the floor by means of a metal profile. As a measure of economy, the windows and doors generally open inwards, but the Ateliers Jean Prouvé’s
design office conducted endless research to develop sliding windows and to perfect assembly details, as well as insulation.

FOR COMFORTABLE HOUSING. Providing 54m2 of living space, the 6m x 9m model of the pavilion for the war victims allowed for more flexibility in the
arrangement of the internal spaces. It also met Jean Prouvé’s concern to provide the homeless population with comfortable housing. He imagined a range
of dismountable wood furniture, of which certain pieces were specially developed. Others, such as the Visiteur armchair, which had been designed in 1941
for a hospital, were used in a domestic environment for the first time.
Pierre Jeanneret’s proposed fit-out in 1945 arranges the living spaces around two portal frames. The one with an integrated smoke outlet creates a cosy
fireplace niche. The Ateliers Jean Prouvé consequently produced a wood-burner, ‘Pyrobal’, which was adapted to all types of fuel. The relationship between
the daytime living spaces and night-time bedroom spaces is fluid thanks to sliding doors and openwork furniture. This project also corresponded with Jean
and Madeleine Prouvé’s desire to install their family in a more permanent prefabricated house.

ASSEMBLY IN A DAY. Although not explicitly stipulated in the contract signed with the State in 1945, on-site assembly of the houses was invariably carried
out by the Ateliers Jean Prouvé’s specialist workmen, whose intervention was always a demonstration of speed. The workshops did indeed have all the
necessary means, hiring qualified personnel and purchasing three trucks, as well as lifting equipment.
Construction was carried out on ground prepared and modified in advance following instruction from the architects responsible for the reconstruction of
housing. The portal frames were first bolted to the floor structure made up of timber beams. The final stage consisted of installing the tarred cardboard on
the roof and connection to supply networks.

“The models [for temporary houses] need to be standardized. The industry needs
to produce large quantities, under compulsory order if need be. It is a wartime industry.
Just like airplanes, a model must be chosen. And imposed.”

Jean Prouvé, 6 février 1946
“We need to build extremely quickly, whole towns and villages have been destroyed.
If we use traditional building methods, it won’t be finished for 20 years.”
