Summer Reading Program
starts strong, to offer events
throughout summer
By Lauren Fitch
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS Big Rapids Community
Library kicked off its summer reading
program Thursday with lunch, coloring
and the chance to sign up for the rest of
the summers activities.
For the rst time, the library will offer
numerous activities throughout the
summer along with reading incentives.
For every 10 books or 500 pages each
child reads, he or she can choose
gift certicates for Taco Bell or Dairy
Queen, books or a pool pass. Friends
of the Library donated the prizes.
They read good books and get cool
prizes on top of that, said Helena
Hayes, library director.
Chelsea Mitchell and Miriam Andrus are
helping Hayes coordinate the summers
activities, which include a tie-dye, paper
mache and bird house crafts, movie
nights, a eld trip to John Ball Zoo and
presentations by a percussion group
and a professional frisbee team.
More than 150 people turned out for the
kick-off, where volunteers were serving
hot dogs and cookies while introducing
children and parents to the One World,
Many Stories theme.
Steve Graetz brought his sons to sign
up for the program.
My wife and I are both teachers. We
have summers off and this is a good
opportunity to get (the kids) ready for
school, he said. They love to read at
home, and this gives us something to
do during the day.
Geralynn McAdams, whos going into
second grade at St. Marys Catholic
School, has participated in summer
reading before and plans to read 20
books this summer.
Her favorites are the Magic Tree House
books.
For more information on One World,
Many Stories, visit www.bigrapids.lib.
mi.us and click on the events tab, or call
(231) 796-5234.
Power of water safety
The Big Rapids Jaycees promote
importance of learning to swim
during River Safety Week
By Jonathan Eppley
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS Wading along the
banks of the Muskegon River or
enjoying an afternoon oat down the
rapids are fun ways to relax with family
and friends in the summer.
The Big Rapids Jaycees want to make
sure the people who enjoy the river
also Respect the Power of the Mighty
Muskegon.
Since taking over the Muskegon
River Water Safety Project last year,
the Jaycees have introduced the
community to its new mascot, Sammy
the Salmon, to help promote river
safety, and have installed a seventh
emergency tower along the Riverwalk.
With plans to create a website about
river safety and install another
emergency tower along Phase III of the
Riverwalk south of Hemlock Park this
summer, the nonprot organization is
showing no signs of slowing down.
Our future focus is going to be river
safety education and really getting
the word out there, said Jaycee Tyler
Schuberg. One of the smartest things
you can do is have some kind of
oatation device when playing in the
river. You can be the strongest swimmer
in the world, but if you get caught in
an undertow and pulled under, you
may not know which way is up. With
the (Muskegon) River, knowing how
to swim is half the battle. Having the
proper safety devices, and knowing
how to use them, is the other part.
To further encourage safe swimming
and teach children to Respect the
Power of the Muskegon River, Sammy
the Salmon and the Jaycees will make
several appearances starting Monday
during River Safety Week.
The week kicks off at the Charles
E. Fairman Community Pool, where
Jaycees will talk to lesson swimmers
from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Monday about
the importance of learning how to swim.
Sammy and the Jaycees will visit the
Big Rapids Middle School from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday to pass out
temporary river safety tattoos, as well
as promote river safety.
River Safety Week will conclude during
The Whitfords performance from noon
to 1 p.m. on Friday at Pocket Park.
Jaycee Matt Yeoman will be on site to
shoot and print photographs of children
with Sammy the Salmon at no cost.
In hopes of creating water safety
awareness among a younger
demographic, the Jaycees will be
hosting a coloring contest for children
ages 5 and younger, ages 6 to 10,
and 11 and up. An entry form will be
included in an upcoming edition of the
Pioneer. Prizes will be awarded for the
top three entries in each age group.
Creating that awareness among a
younger crowd is one of the missions
of the organization, said Jaycee Erin
Diehm.
Its the most important thing for a
child to know how to swim. If they
understand the basics, theyre much
better off, Diehm said. If they are in
the river and can do those basic things,
then they can go out there, not be
scared and feel a little less intimidated.

(NewsUSA) - The headache youve
had for the past year planning your
wedding, inviting all the guests and
meticulously checking to ensure your
big day runs smoothly is nally over.
And, just around the corner, you can
see your honeymoon in sight. The
last things on your mind are planning,
thinking and otherwise doing anything
but relaxing, right?
To ease your mind after the chaos, the
ultimate Mexican getaways are offered
by The Villa Group Resorts, complete
with Hacienda-style villas, exotic spa
treatments and palm tree-framed views
of the Pacic Ocean. Youll nally be
able to unwind, comfortable knowing
everything you could need or want is at
your ngertips.
With seven different locations in four
unique destinations including Cabo San
Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta
and the Sierra Madre Mountains,
The Villa Group caters to a variety of
interests. Each location offers unique
scenery, activities and accommodations
that can make your honeymoon exactly
the way youve envisioned it.
The myriad vacation options available
to newlyweds are overwhelming, but
noting a few key things will keep that
headache at bay and your relaxation
level high:
- Pick a location that appeals to
both of you. Where do you see you
two having the most fun? Secluded
beaches, tranquil mountains or
cobblestone streets lined with
shopping?
- Decide how you want to spend your
days. Will you lounge poolside, taking
in lagoons and waterfalls, or do you
want to explore the surrounding area by
horseback, canoe or bike?
- Scope out the options in his-and-her
spa treatments, such as hydrotherapy
sessions, mud baths and massages.
Some resorts offer ultra-relaxing
themes, while others focus more on
invigorating treatments.
- How will you spend your evenings?
Resorts often provide nighttime
festivities, complete with themed
dining events mere feet from your
room. Or, would you rather be near a
town where you can explore both the
areas attractions and what the resort
provides?
Whatever type of honeymoon you and
your new spouse want, The Villa Group
Resorts offers honeymoon packages
prepared to make your matrimony
celebration a once-in-a-lifetime
experience. And, with packages geared
toward wedding anniversaries, you can
go back and have that once-in-life-time
vacation all over again.

In a Daily Slump? Tips to Make
Sure You Get a Good Nights
Sleep
(NewsUSA) - Do you nd yourself
fatigued and yawning throughout the
day? A mid-afternoon slump could really
be trying to tell you something -- its
likely you arent getting enough sleep!
The average adult needs seven to
nine hours of sleep per day to function
properly. However, in a 2005 health
survey, 30 percent of adults nationwide
reported getting only about six hours
of sleep per day. For many adults,
fatigue seems inevitable. In a 2002
study conducted by the National Sleep
Foundation, 37 percent of adults
reported being so sleepy during the
day that it interfered with their daily
activities. Much of that lost sleep can be
attributed to background noises.
Background noise is a problem for
people when they are sleeping, said
Dr. Rafael Pelayo, associate professor
at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic
at Stanford University School of
Medicine.
A study by Consumer Reports found
that sound machines are nearly
as effective as prescription sleep
medications, and more effective than
over-the-counter sleep medications
or aids, without the side-effects. Dr.
Pelayo recommends the Sound+Sleep
Adaptive Sound Therapy Machine
(www.soundofsleep.com) as part of
a healthy sleep plan for people trying
to achieve a better nights sleep with
minimal use of drugs.
There are a lot of dumb sound
machines out there that just play
constant noise in an attempt to cover
up these disruptions, says Dr. Pelayo.
The new Sound+Sleep responds to
sudden background disturbances by
adjusting its sound output to better
mask the noise. For some people, the
improved sound masking seems to help
them sleep better.
Other tips for better nighttime sleep
include:
* Set a regular bed time and stick to it.
* Eliminate caffeine before bed.
* Sleep without the lights or TV on.
* Get plenty of exercise during the
day.

information about how you can get a
better nights sleep
Understanding Your Pets
Immune System
(NewsUSA) - In my practice, Ive
always used probiotics in general -;
as animals need probiotics just like
humans. Adding benecial bacteria
to a pets diet helps the digestive
system combat intestinal parasites and
improves digestive function.
The gastrointestinal tract is such an
important foundation to pets immune
systems because the gut is an entry
point for pathogens. If youre using
probiotics, the immune system is
supported and strengthened to ght
infection quickly and aggressively.
Probiotics also help stop the immune
system from over-reacting and creating
inammation.
One common issue for pets is ear
infection. Ive observed that whether
we used conventional or alternative
treatments, adding a probiotic product
for immune system support shortens
the length and reduces the severity
of the infection. I usually see a better
outcome by adding Del-Immune V
(www.delimmune.com) to treatment,
and generally dont need to do
additional treatments, as is common
with ear infections.
Another common issue with pets is
skin problems, including mange. I
have found that skin problems improve
quickly with a probiotic product, like
Del-Immune V. I use it for immune
system support with all types of
mange, including the problematic
demodectic mange. Some animals
have genetically inherited immune
weaknesses that allow mange-inducing
mites to overgrow. Dogs can inherit the
mites from their parents. You will know
the mites are out of control if mange
becomes a problem.
Probiotics help immensely by
supporting the immune system in
mounting an appropriate response to
the mange mites. Traditional treatments
for mange can include strong antibiotics
and dips in toxic medicines. But many
dogs, if provided a good diet and Del-
Immune V, can get over it on their own

-- unless the infection is too severe.
Most dogs survive with veterinary
intervention, but if severe enough,
mange can be fatal.
See your local veterinarian if your pet
begins to display any symptoms.
What Makes a Successful Diet
Plan?
(NewsUSA) - A low-calorie diet
consisting solely of grapefruit, cabbage
soup or weight-loss milkshakes will
most likely cause you to lose weight, if
strictly followed. But is it healthy? Not a
chance.
Almost any diet plan will work for a
while, yet up to 95 percent of dieters
who lose weight fail to keep that weight
off after just one year. According to Dr.
Mike Moreno, author of the NY Times
bestselling book The 17 Day Diet, the
two biggest obstacles that cause diets
to fail are boredom and plateau. Thats
because most mainstream diets are too
complex or restrictive, making it nearly
impossible to stick with them for a long
period of time.
Instead, Moreno emphasizes that
weight loss that results in even the
smallest changes in body composition
can pay off with life-changing benets.
He encourages participants to measure
their success, not just in pounds, but
also by looking at the overall health
benets to include cholesterol, healthier
blood sugar readings, and improved
blood pressure.
As the founding physician behind
BistroMD, the provider of the meal plan
for The 17 Day Diet, Dr. Caroline J.
Cederquist, a bariatric physician and
family practice physician, agrees that
even something as small as a 5 percent
decrease in weight loss is signicant
with regards to lowering the health risks
associated with being overweight.
In my medical practice, diabetic and
overweight patients who achieve 5
percent weight loss often have lower
blood sugar readings and also have
improvements in their blood pressure,
says Dr. Cederquist.
Morenos The 17 Day Diet helps
you lose weight with a cycled eating
plan that alters the amounts of
carbohydrates, proteins and fats
you eat every few days. We call it
metabolic, or body, confusion, Moreno
explains. Divided across four phases,
each is designed to accomplish a
different objective: burning fat, resetting
the metabolism and teaching you
proper portion control and hunger signs.
If you want to try The 17 Day Diet but
dont want to cook, you can bring the
meals from the popular book to your
table by ordering The 17 Day Diet
Meal Plan by BistroMD. For more
information, visit www.The17DayDiet.

Rules of Engagement: What
to Know Before Popping the
Question
(NewsUSA) - An engagement ring
symbolizes your promise to love and
cherish your partner forever, and shows
the world your commitment to your
ance. Many women dream about
their engagement ring their entire lives,
so choosing the right style is of utmost
importance.
Here are some tips to ease the
pressure of nding the ring and
proposing:
Its Not Only About the Diamond
A rings setting is as important as
its diamond because the setting is
what displays and secures the stone.
Platinum provides an ideal setting as it
is stronger than other precious metals,
which means that you dont have to
worry about losing the center stone
with everyday wear. Also, platinum is
a naturally white metal, allowing the
diamond to sparkle even brighter.
Did you know that a platinum
engagement ring will last forever?
Since platinum is so durable and
loses little metal over time, the ring
will undoubtedly become a family
heirloom that can be passed down for
generations to follow. And platinum
engagement rings are surprisingly
affordable. Contrary to popular belief,
they are available in a wide range of
price points, starting at around $1,000
at BlueNile.com.
Know Her Style
Before you go to the jewelry store,
know your future ances style,
personality and lifestyle since there is a
ring to suit her perfectly. For example,
a woman with a hands-on job, like
nursing, might prefer a simple band
with a secure setting, while a woman
who has a less active job might want
something more intricate. A woman with
classic style will want a different band
design than a trend-setting fashionista.
A classic polished platinum band from
Michael Barin will suit a girl with more
traditional tastes, while a birth stone of
colored diamonds on an embellished
band like one from Suna Bros. will look
bold and unique, says jewelry and
style expert Michael OConnor. To
gure out her ring size, press one of
your girlfriends rings in a bar of soap
until it leaves a mark. You can also put
one of her rings on your own hand,
mark where it falls on your nger and
have the jeweler measure that area,
suggests OConnor.
How to Propose
Some women want a public proposal
in front of friends and family, while
others want something private and
special. In either case, your ance
will remember the day for the rest of
her life. Think about what your ance
likes, and where and how you met.

or choosing an engagement ring, visit

ith a little more than three
weeks of classes left, stu-
dents at the Math/Science/
Technology Center are filling the remain-
ing days of the school year with as many
extra learning activities as possible.
It is these types of activities that
educators say make the Math/Science/
Technology Center worth the
investment.
However, due to decreased interest
fromlocal districts, the Mecosta-Osceola
Intermediate School District waits to see
if the center will sustain itself.

BIGRAPIDS Watching a big,
red fire truck whizz by with lights
flashing and sirens blaring was
something that fascinated Jerrad
Councilor as a child.
Now hes doing more than
watching the trucks rush to the
scenehesclimbingaboardtohelp
fight fires as a part-paid firefighter
for the Big Rapids Department of
Public Safety.
Ive always thought it would be
exciting, Councilor said. I always
liked the lights and sirens as a kid
and thought it would be fun to do.
... Now Im getting my pager, and
Ive been on a few runs for carbon
monoxide, but havent been to any
big fires yet.
Councilor recently completed
his Fire 1 and Fire 2 certification
classes, which teach potential fire-
fighters how to extinguish a blaz-
ing building while trying to limit
the amount of property damage.
Getting certified allows him to
respond to fire calls with the rest of
the crew.
The Big Rapids Department
of Public Safety fire crew is look-
ing for more people like Councilor
to fill a few open spots for part-
paid firefighters, who work on an
on-call basis, like volunteer fire-
fighters, but are paid for their time
and given on-the-job health care
coverage in the event that theyre
injured on scene.

the man schedule II narcot-
ics, said Sgt. Drew Nielsen.
The man then left out the
front door on foot. Deputies
arrived at the scene at 1 p.m.
Anyone who recognizes

At Belle Oakes, my meals are
prepared for me and my
housekeeping is done. They
offer access to exercise
programs to keep me
motivated and healthy. Not to
mention the on site store,
beauty parlor and spa.
My apartment offers me
the most privacy and
indpendence available.
Stop in and see why so many
seniors prefer Belle Oakes
over your traditional retirement
homes. Youll be glad you did.
