Embroidery floss Small craft or old pillow Safety pin Scissors 60 Fabric tape measure

Embroidery floss typically comes in skeins that are 8 meters (8.7 yards) long. Most patterns require at least 60 inches for each strand. This means that you should be able to cut 5 strands per skein. Unless you are making a very wide or very long bracelet, one skein per color should be enough to make one bracelet. A small craft pillow or old pillow is recommended to use as your work station. It should be comfortable enough to sit in your lap and not have any special meaning. Since a safety pin is used to anchor the threads down, eventually many holes will start to appear in the pillow as you expand your bracelet creations. Alternative travelling workstation. My favorite workstation for making friendship bracelets? My leg! I like using a safety pin to fasten my work to my jeans. No pillow required that way. A 60 inch fabric tape measure is not necessary, a yard stick or other measuring device can be used, but it is strongly suggested.

Friendship Bracelet Knots and Abbreviations

These are the 4 basic knots you'll use for making floss friendship bracelets. The abbreviations (in brackets) should come in handy if you follow patterns - they are commonly used in friendship bracelet instructions.

Forward Knot

Watch a forward knot video.

To make a Forward Knot, start with the thread on the left (red). Lay the thread on top of the right thread (white). This should make the number 4.

Loop the left thread (red) under the right thread (white) and pull upwards. ** Repeat to finish the knot. The left thread will now be on the right.

Backward Knot (B):

Watch a video showing how to make a backward knot.

The Backward Knot starts on the right and moves left. Lay the right thread (yellow) on top of the left (red).

Loop the right thread under the left and pull upwards. **Repeat to finish the knot. The right thread will now be on the left.

Forward-Backward Knot (FB):

This knot starts with the first loop of the forward knot and ends with the backward knot. This means that the thread on the left will stay on the left when the knot is completed. Watch a forward backward knot video to see this in action. top

Backward-Forward Knot (BF):

This knot is reverse of the FB knot. It starts with the backward knot and finishes with the forward knot. The right thread will stay on the right. Watch a backward-forward knot video to see this knot being made. top

Starting a Friendship Bracelet

Once you have decided on the bracelet pattern and color scheme, measure the strands to the desired length and cut. Lay the strands together, lining their centers up. Fold the strands in half and make a knot at the center, leaving a loop approximately - an inch long. This loop will be used to tie the bracelet when complete. When you have the loop at the length you want it, pull on the strands to make the knot tighter. Lay out the strands in the order the pattern suggests. Try different variations of color patterns to see which looks best to you. You can then begin knotting. top

Finishing Your Friendship Bracelet

After reaching the desired length of your bracelet, separate the strands into 2 equal groups. Braid each group to at least 4 inches and put a knot at the bottom. Pull the strands to tighten the knots.

Trim the remaining strands. The braids can be shortened after the bracelet is on the wrist, if they are too long. Note: If you are following a pattern, the pattern may have different friendship bracelet instructions for finishing off. I like this finishing style because I don't have to be too particular about measuring the bracelet length. top

Fastening Your Friendship Bracelet

To fasten on the wrist, lay your wrist on the bracelet. Pull one braid through the loop and tie to the other braid. You are finished!

Friendship Bracelet Tips:

y

y y

y y y y y y y

The most important thing to remember when making friendship bracelets is to keep consistent tension on the threads in use. It is a matter of personal preference on how tight you want it, but it should not be too loose, as the bracelet could fall apart. If the bracelet seems too tight, dont worry. It will loosen after repeated wearings. Remember, the longer and more complex the bracelet pattern, the more thread you will need. Sixty inches per strand is the minimum you will need. Often, you will need a longer strand of one color than another. Leave at least 6 inches for the braids. If your bracelet curls, the knots may be too tight. Even tension is the key - not too tight or too loose. For curling that just won't stop, try ironing lightly using steam, but don't press too too hard with the iron- you'll flatten the knots. Take your time, and don't get frustrated. Practice makes perfect. It is ok if you make a mistake, as long as you detect it quickly. The knots can be taken out. Dont be afraid to experiment with knots and colors. You never know when a masterpiece might be created! Have fun! I hope you enjoyed these friendship bracelet instructions!

The Candy Stripe

Embroidery Floss Friendship Bracelet Pattern
The "Candy Stripe" is the easiest friendship bracelet pattern for a beginner. Here's how to make it:

What you need:

y y

Embroidery floss in your choice of colors Masking tape, a safety pin, or a clipboard y Scissors y Measuring Tape

Fig. 1

Fig. 2

Fig. 3

Step 1:
Cut 3 strands of each of your 3 colors of floss to about 3 feet each. (I know, a lot of 3's.)

Step 2:
Gripping all strands together, tie an overhand knot, leaving a tail of about 3 inches

Step 3:

Attach your floss to something - you can use masking tape to tape it to a table, clip it to a clipboard, or (my personal favorite) use a safety pin to attach it to your pant leg. (This last way makes it really portable. I like to make bracelet on my bus ride to school.)

Step 4:
Spread out your floss strands (see fig. 1).

Step 5 (a.k.a. Row 1):

Using your left-most strand of floss, bring it over strand 2, behind strand 2, and back in front of strand 1. This is called a half hitch knot. It's a lot easier to show you this than to describe it: see fig. 2. Make sure you are holding strand 2 taut when you make the knot, and pull strand 1 up and slightly to the right, gently but firmly to tighten the knot. To continue down the row, use the same strand you knotted over strand 2, and use it to form the same knot on strand 3. Continue using strand 1 to make a knot on strand 4, then 5, etc., until you have made a knot on each strand all the way across. If you completed the row correctly, the strand that was the left-most strand at the beginning of Step 5 is now the right-most strand. Sidebar: Learning how to make friendship bracelets that look good takes a little practice. Patience and practice young apprentice! Pay attention to what you're doing and try to keep an even tension for each knot. Not too tight and not too slack - too tight and it'll start to curl and look weird. Too slack and it'll look weird too.

Step 6 (a.k.a. Row 2):

Do it again, starting with your leftmost strand (see fig. 3).

Step 7 (a.k.a. Row 3):

A repeat of step 6!

Step 8
Wash, rinse and repeat - I'm sure you get the picture. Keep starting with your left-most strand, and knot all the way across. (For you literalists - don't actually wash anything. I just mean that you do it again and again and again...) Fig. 4 is an illustration of what your friendship band will start to look like as you start building up your rows.

Fig. 4

Step 9:
When your friendship bracelet is the right length, make another overhand knot. To finish it off, you can braid the ends, or string beads onto them.

Variations:
The example images for these friendship bracelet instructions use 3 colors, but you can change that up.

Friendship Bracelet Patterns: Why don't you try adding the Chinese staircase to your collection?
When I first started making these friendship bracelets, I started out with the "Chinese staircase". Basically you have around 3 feet of string, and you have three strings (or more). You tie them at the top (don't fold them in half) and you pick one color and wrap it around the two others and then make a forward knot. Then you do that about five or how ever many times then you switch them off.

Triple Diagonal Swirl 1.Gather 3 strings each a different color. Make them all about 30 inches long. 2.Tie a single knot 2 inches down from the top. 3.Separate the strings. ( I used yellow, orange, and blue) 4.Start with the first string (yellow) and tie a double knot around string 2 (orange) 5.Now take string 1 (yellow) and repeat step 4 on all the other strings.(Example in picture)

6.Now do steps 4 and 5 with the next string in line.(orange) And repeat until you've made 12 rows. 7.Tie a single knot around the group. Repeat 12 times. 8.Repeat step 6 with the other 2 colors. 9.Now repeat steps 6, 7, and 8 until the bracelet is as long as you want. Tie off. Then tie the 2 tails around your wrist and wear it

Swirl Knot! 1.Gather 3 strings each a different color. Make them about 30 inches long. 2. Tie a knot about 2 inches down from the top. 3.Hold all the strings together with one left out. 5.You should have both purple in the middle now, tie them in a double knot and repeat step 4 only this time use the blue. (Example in picture)

6.Keep making those chevrons until you have 4. 7.Now get strings 2, 3, 4 on the left and make the swirl knot. Do this 10 times. Now do the same on the right side. 8.Once you've finished the ten swirl knots you should have the 2 purple in the middle. The Basics!
Types of knots. The Basic Left Knot (left to right) 1.Gather 2 strings (left hand string and right hand string) hold the right string straight. Knot the left string around it. 2.Pull the left string toward the left and pull tight. Repeat to make double knot.

The Basic Right Knot (right to left) 1.Gather 2 strings (right hand string and left hand string) hold the left string straight. Knot the right string around it. 2.Pull the right string toward the right and pull tight. Repeat to make double knot.

ALWAYS TIE DOUBLE KNOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! To tie off. Loop at one end. 1.Take the tail end divide it into 2 groups. 2.Put one group through the loop and tie it in a knot with the other group.(so your tying a knot around the loop) 2 Tails. 1.Tie the 2 tails together into one knot.
