In a time when sustainability and victory gardenswhich graced the backyards and schoolyards of Hawaii during both WW I and WW II, are on our minds, Kauamanu (Hawaiian for rain bird) is achieving just that. Located in the historical section of Hana called Kaeleku, this legendary district was inhabited by ancient Hawaiians as far back as the 15th Century. The immense historical community is evidenced by Piilanihale, Hawaiis largest heiau (place of worship) which was unveiled to modern man as recently as the 1970s. Early Hawaiians selected Kaeleku for its perfect amounts of rain and sun for growing massive volumes of food for the vast ancient Hawaiian community. As the centuries passed, the Hana region, still today, produces large quantities of the fresh foods consumed and enjoyed in Hawaii.

Nearby quaint Hana Airport is another venue to arrive to or depart from Hana. Hana Town offers a library and other necessary facilities. Local residents typically go to Kahului once or twice a month for their Costco run and other errands. Needless to say, they are happy to return to their haven of Hana.
Common foods produced are tomatoes, sweet potatoes and a chic ground cover of pumpkins. Fifteen species of non-running bamboo dot the acreage. Shoots of edible young bamboo are often served in salads and stir-fry. Herbal and medicinal plants such as lemongrass, noni, kava, cacao, cinnamon, allspice, miracle berry, and achiote add to the sustainable attributes of this prized property.
