    THE THOUGHT TODAY June 27, 2011 Psalms 40 - 43 The Psalmists Lament

    TodaymarksthreeyearssinceIstartedtowriteTheThoughtTodayintheseriesofreflectionswhichInamed thenDimensionsofFaith.ThesubjectofthefirstreflectionwasTheFaithofaMustardSeed.Itwasbased ontheGospelreadingsfromMatthew13:31,Mark4:30andLuke13:18.TheconclusionthenwasGodcan takeourlittlethingstocreateanoverwhelmingabundanceforourselvesandothers.Today,threeyears andnearly50reflectionslater,Iwalkedintomyofficeforthedailyworkload,bringingwithmesome preoccupationsoftheweekendandsomefrustrationsfortheweekahead. IclearedthespaceonmydeskfortheLaptopComputerandpreparedforthetasksathand.Therearereports tobereviewed,decisionstobemade,peopletomeet,issuestoberesolved,obligationstobemetallcrowding mymindforattentionandaction.Withahintoffrustrationalreadycreepingin,IreachedfortheBiblebeside me,foundmyrandomlychosenBiblepassage(proof)asIsearchedforthewordtoday.Myrightthumbrested onPsalms43:2whereIreadForthouarttheGodofmystrength:whyhastthoucastmeoff?WhygoI mourningbecauseoftheoppressionoftheenemy?Osendoutthylightandthytruth.Letthemleadme.Let thembringmeuntothyholyhillandtothytabernacles.Infascination,IreadonWhyarethoucastdownOmy soulandwhyartthoudisquietedwithinme?HopeinGodforIshallyetpraisehimwhoisthehealthofmy countenanceandmyGod. Withgreatinterest,IsoughtforthecontextwithinwhichthePsalmistwaswriting.Myeyesmovedupthepage toPsalm42,whereIreadofthePsalmiststruggletobalanceaspiritualtensionanddisturbanceinhisspirit. Thetellingofhisconcerns(hislamentations)isjuxtaposedwithwordsofsolace,comfort,andreassurance.He askswhyartthoucastdown,ohmysoulandwhyartthoudisquietedwithinme?ThenheanswersHopethou inGodforIshallyetpraisehimwhoisthehealthofmycountenanceandmyGod. Earlierinthispsalm,hehaddeclaredAsthehartpantethafterthewaterbrooks(forcoolingstreams)sopanteth mysoulafterthee,OGod.AsIreadthePsalmiststruggletoreconciletheschismsandissuesinhisspirit,I feltmyownempathy(asapoet)foranotherwriterstruggletoreconcilethedeeptravails,whichsometimes overtakeourspiritsandemotions,whenspiritualandemotionaltensionsbecomealmostunbearable. AsImovedbackwardstoPsalms41and40,IwasstruckbytheconsistenttenorofthePsalmsamanstruggle toliveandGodconsistentopennesstoamandeepestlongingsandtravails.Thisopennessshowsitselfinthe lovingactionsofaGodwhoinclineshisear,bringsoneoutofmiryclayuntosolidrock,putsanewsongin onemouth,deliversintimesoftrouble,deliversfromoneenemies,strengthensthoselanguishinguponthebed, healsthesoul,ismerciful,upholdestamaninhisintegrity,commandshislovingkindnessinthedaytime, becomeshissonginthenight,becomestheGodofmystrength,isthehealthofmycountenanceandaboveall myGod. AsIreadbackwardsandforwardsandponderedthewordsofthePsalmistthroughhisowntrialsand lamentations,IambothstruckandmovedbythePsalmistabidingfaithinthepowerofGodtocarrythe Psalmistthen,andyouandInowthroughourowntimesoflamentations Today.
