Chamisal Vineyards
While we experience wonderful weather year round on the Central Coast, we think there is no better time than summer to visit Chamisal Vineyards. Guests are welcome to enjoy Chamisals delicious estate wines on the outdoor patio in a comfortable setting of shade and sun. The same coastal climate that provides the ideal growing environment for Chamisals signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also results in very comfortable 70-degree weather with the occasional coastal breeze. On the rare warmer days, the tasting room is cool and inviting with a beautiful view of the historic vineyard to enjoy while you taste a selection of estate grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir along with one of Chamisals distinctive cool climate Rhone varietal bottlings. If youd rather skip the formal tasting and enjoy a chilled bottle of refreshing oak-free Stainless Chardonnay on the patio with a picnic lunch from home, you are welcome to do so as well. Throughout the summer, Chamisal hosts a number of exciting events. On July 9th, Concert in the Vineyard will take place (in the vineyard, of course!) where local favorite Still Time and special guests Sparrows Gate will be jamming on. This event is open to the public and benefits the SLO County Food Bank. Tickets are $25 and include entrance to the concert and wine sampling. In attendance and serving their delectable fare will be Full of Life flatbreads, Joses famous tacos and Doc Bernstein ice cream. Lobsterfest, Chamisals most popular event, sold out within the first two months of the year, so they have decided to add another date on the evening of Friday, August 5th. This extraordinary event showcases several chefs and vendors from all over the county boasting oyster bars, passed hors doeuvres, cupcakes, a photo booth and, of course, Maine lobster! The open layout of the Chamisals patio and tasting room encourages intermingling of the gracious hospitality staff and their guests. You may run into your neighbor, travelers from out of the country, or even an occasional furry four-legged friend. The staff at Chamisal loves animals, regularly donates to the local humane societies and welcomes well-behaved dogs. Chamisal is a wonderful place to visit for both their bold and delicious wines and the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The winery is happy to accommodate all wine lovers, from the novice to the connoisseur, but please keep in mind that reservations are required for parties of seven or more. Chamisal Vineyards is located at 7525 Orcutt Road, San Luis Obispo, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit Chamisalvineyards.com or call (805) 541-9463.

FIRESTONE
Vineyard & Winery
by Carolyn Turner
The wine industry is all about change. Its about creating perfection within the parameters that Mother Nature doles out from year to year. No two years are alike, which amounts to no two vintages or wines ever being the same. In this respect, the wine industry is one of the most dynamic and exciting industries to be in, a fact that Firestone Vineyard & Winery truly takes to heart. Although they hold the title as the first ever estate winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, Firestone Vineyard & Winery is constantly looking for new ways to take themselves and their wines to new levels. This drive began in 1972, when Leonard and Brooks Firestone began their winery at a time when the belief that the Santa Ynez Valley could grow, let alone produce, world-class wines was a belief shared by a select few. Luckily for us, the Firestone family vision still continues to thrive today at their newly renovated tasting room located on a breathtaking 400-acre property. Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Foxen Canyon wine trail, the newly remodeled Firestone Tasting Room offers tastings of their flagship Bordeaux and Rhne-style wines that exemplify the unique terroir of their estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and of course Syrah. You also wont want to miss a taste of The Ambassador, a Bordeaux-style blend of the best barrels in the cellar named in honor of Leonard Firestone, who was a former US Ambassador to Belgium. Yet its the Lineage Chairman Series that offers a truly unique palate, as its a blend created by handpicking the best fruit from each block of vines throughout the vineyard. Every year the blend changes depending on the fruit picked, creating a wine with rich, fruit flavors and a long, velvety finish. Winemaker Paul Warson has made it his focus to create wines that truly capture the unique heritage and terroir of the Firestone vineyards. Warson is incredibly passionate about his craft, which shows throughout his career as a winemaker over the past fifteen years in Napa and Australia. He brings a broad range of winemaking styles and philosophies and is excited to continue to raise the quality of the Firestone wines. Theyre certainly receiving the accolades and awards to prove it. Firestone winery should be a destination winery, not only for its beauty but also for its wines, said Warson. My goal is to create each wine to be able to show Firestone; to be able to take you there in each glass. Visitors will often have the unique opportunity to meet Warson while visiting Firestone; he lives on the property with his wife, two children and his dog, and enjoys sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with guests. Im fortunate to be able to make a living out of my hobby, said Warson. This is exactly what I would be doing in my free time. Along with their dynamic winemaker and wines, Firestone also offers a complimentary tour daily that will take you on a journey that starts at a real cork tree, and continues throughout the vineyards and barrel room, finishing in the historical room with a look at the history of the Firestone family. Although the tour includes wine tasting and a complementary logo glass, visitors of all ages are

welcome to experience the beauty and history of Firestone and the growth of the Santa Ynez wine country. Another great way to allow the whole family (including your pets!) to enjoy Firestone is to come to the free Concert Series on the first Friday of every month. The next show will be on Friday, July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. featuring The Koles. Enjoy wine and snacks in the tasting room, or feel free to bring your own picnic. Make sure to check the schedule online for the list of upcoming bands! Your calendar should also be marked for the Annual Firestone Cellar Club Summer BBQ, coming up on Saturday, July 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Local band, The Crisptones will have you tapping your toes and dancing the night away, and Plemmons Catering will offer a scrumptious Santa Maria-style BBQ paired with a lineup of wines including their new releases. Tickets are only $40 for members of $50 for non member, and includes dinner, two drink tickets for a glass of wine, and the chance to be entered into a drawing for a two-night stay at the Carranza Guest House situated in the middle of Firestone vineyards! Whether visiting for your first or fiftieth time, Firstone Vineyard & Winery is certainly a must-visit. Their commitment to family and community only enhances their dedication to sharing their history and quality winemaking, and youre sure to leave with a lingering finish that is sure to keep you coming back for more. Firestone Vineyard & Winery is located at 5000 Zaca Staion Road in Los Olivos and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free daily tours are available at 11:15 a.m., 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. For more information, call (805) 688-3940, www.firestonewine.com.

Perfect Pairs
Niner Dogs with a Tangy Citrus Mustard, Mango Apple Relish
The Niner Wine Estates 2011 Cooking Series is well under way and we have had food on the brain! Combined with the hot summer days and comfortably cool nights Paso Robles is accustomed to, the meals weve been cooking here at Niner Wine Estates have consisted entirely of barbequed delights. Hot dogs are synonymous with summer-time grilling in Central Coast Wine Country, but sometimes you might feel like assembling something a little more elegant. Try this spectacular Gourmet Hot Dog recipe paired with our refreshing 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with aromas of melon and lemon rind. The 2009 Sauvignon Blanc is creamy and full in the mouth, with flavors of tart kiwi, lime leaves, lemongrass, green apple and a hint of apricot. It is crisp, with a pleasing mineral characteristic a perfect complement to this hot dog recipe. With inspiration drawn from Chef Bradley Ogden at Root 246 in Solvang, these light and fresh toppings are sure to impress guests at your next barbecue. Want to dig deeper into the wonderful world of food and wine pairing? Join the Niner Wine Estates team for the 2011 Summer Cooking Series with classes held on July 16th, July 30th and August 14th. To learn more: visit the website, ninerwine.com, give the team a call at (805) 239.2233 or simply pay them a visit at 2400 Highway 46 West in the heart of Paso Robles Wine Country.

NINER DOGS WITH A TANGY CITRUS MUSTARD AND MANGO APPLE RELISH
TANGY CITRUS MUSTARD For best results, prepare the day before you plan to serve the hot dogs and leave in the refrigerator overnight to allow the mustard to set and thicken. (1) 8 oz. jar of Dijon mustard 8 oz. low fat or olive oil mayonnaise 1 ripe orange Fresh tarragon Mix Dijon mustard and mayonnaise together. Zest one orange into mixture. Cut orange in half and squeeze the juice from both halves, including some of the pulp, into the mustard. Chop about a teaspoon of fresh tarragon and mix in. Refrigerate overnight to allow the mustard to set and thicken. MANGO APPLE RELISH Also best when prepared the day before and allowed to rest in the refrigerator overnight. 1 cup julienned mangos 1 cup julienned green apples (peeled and cored) 1 cup thinly sliced red onion (medium-sized onion, halved before slicing) 2 cups apple cider cup apple cider vinegar cup rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons brown sugar tablespoon dried basil 1 teaspoon mustard seed 1 teaspoon coriander seed 1 teaspoon fennel seed teaspoon celery seed teaspoon cumin seed cilantro Julienne mangos and green apple to an average length of 2 inches. Thinly slice the red onion to the same length. In a large non-metal bowl, add all liquids, kosher salt, brown sugar, dry basil and spice seeds and mix until sugar and salt are dissolved. Add mangos, green apples and onions and let rest in the refrigerator overnight. Just before serving, chop a handful of cilantro and fold into the relish. Drain most of the liquid. Top your favorite all-beef hot dog, fresh off the grill, with tangy citrus mustard and mango apple relish. For a spicier combination, use a sausage or hot link instead. Enjoy with a chilled glass of Niner Wine Estates 2009 Sauvignon Blanc.

The California Wine Festival

Now in its eighth year, the California Wine Festivals three days of wine events are scheduled for July 14-16, in picturesque Santa Barbara. Were expecting another great festival this year, Director Don Fritzen said. Our new Orange County California Wine Festival sold out last year and we expect the same here in our original home base where weve always enjoyed tremendous support. Organizers are expecting a wide variety of wineries from every wine region in California to pour at the prestigious three days of events, plus regional microbreweries, some imported wine and even vodka and tequila tasting exhibitors. Were also working hard to attract the best local and regional restaurants and gourmet food purveyors from around the country, Fritzen said. Of course, live musical entertainment has been lined up at all three events to provide an exciting sound track to this outdoor extravaganza. Emily Kaufmann, the growing companys new Vice President of Festival Operations agrees with Fritzens vision of a bright future, Were beginning to attract some national sponsorships along with more significant wineries and gourmet food purveyors. Our brand has stood the test of time, and weve always maintained the highest standard of wine, food and fun entertainment, giving our guests more for their dollar. Elite wineries, gourmet food manufacturers, top restaurants, and especially event sponsors recognize the value they receive from marketing to CWFs high profile clientele in an environment of prestigious wines, foods and lots of sun and fun. Kaufmann concluded Tickets are going on sale sooner than ever before this year as demand seems to continue to rise for California Wine Festivals blend of quality wines and gourmet foods, presented in a one-of-a-kind California setting. Better buy early and take advantage of our early bird prices, as we expect to sell out again, Kaufmann warned! and hot Latin sounds will keep everyone caliente throughout the event.

Friday, 4:30-6pm, Riedel Wine Glass Seminar & Tasting

The California Wine Festival will host a Riedel Glassware Journey tasting/seminar at the Fess Parkers Doubletree Resort where attendees will explore how the shape and size of the glass effects the perception of the wine on the palate. Each attendee will receive their own set (to take home) of four varietal specific wine glasses (valued at $123) for the seminar/tasting. Guests attending this fascinating class will also get front of the line privileges if attending the CWF Sunset Rare & Reserve Wine Tasting immediately following the seminar.

Top chefs from Santa Barbaras most popular restaurants will prepare amazing hot and cold gourmet appetizers while live jazz keeps things super cool. The charming old-world carousel at Chase Palm Park Plaza provides the backdrop for this romantic summer night under the stars.

Saturday, 1-4pm, Beachside Food & Wine Fest

This ever-popular wine event will hit Santa Barbaras sun-splashed beachside location for a day of sun, sea, wine, food and music. Literally hundreds of premium California wines are served up along with the best of the regional microbreweries, local top chefs and food purveyors and vendors of all things related to wine. Artwork by Melissa Mahoney at Carina Cellars

Carina Cellars is excited to welcome the artwork of Santa Barbara artist Melissa Mahoney, which is on display at their Los Olivos tasting room. Growing up in a family of artists, Mahoney recalls that some of her earliest memories were of her and her mother sketching and drawing pen-and-ink still-lifes at the kitchen table. Thus sparked a life-long love of art, which continued through a BFA at the University of Georgia, and graduate work in Cortona, Italy where she studied calligraphy and art history. Although Mahoney has worked extensively with oil pastels, watercolor pencils, encaustic, oil and acrylic paints, her current work is mixed media. The materials range from traditional canvas and paint, to raw linen, modeling paste and foil leaf. I like the contrast of rough textures and distressed layers with refined, smooth textures like foil leaf and metallic enamel, said Mahoney. larity. Vortices draw into their powerful currents all that surround them. My series of paintings is inspired by this sense of energy, said Mahoney. A thought or idea sparks a creation that starts the transfer to a two-dimensional surface. Each piece is intended to convey a sense of motion and an energy that captures, and then transcends, the particular subject matter. Energy in its raw form, feeding the canvas with paint and modeling paste, utilizing color with shades of dark and light, will in turn invite the viewer to receive the energy, if they so choose. Vortices is on display through August 31 in the Carina Cellars Tasting Room at 2900 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. The tasting room is open daily from 11a.m. to 5p.m. For more information, go to www.carinacellars.com or call (805) 688-2459, and you can also visit Melissa Mahoneys personal website: www.mahoneyartwork.com.

A Wine Garden?
Functional outdoor entertaining with style
If you love wine and entertaining, you will love The LEDGE a beautifully handcrafted, wrought iron table that easily attaches to pots, urns and even wine barrels. Its the perfect pairing of function and beauty! The LEDGE is the progressive dinner, wine tasting and outdoor entertaining creation of Fresno, California resident Sharon Duncan. I have always had a passion for gardening and entertaining and I found a unique way to blend the two, says Duncan. We often host dinners at our home and I wanted to create a sort of partygoers paradise, where our guests could relax next to beautiful pots full of lush plants in our patio sitting areas. I noticed during gatherings that people were holding their wine glasses and struggling to balance their appetizer plates, and that the need for more table space was apparent. I got tired of renting pub tables, cloths and centerpieces, then I realized I could make use of the beautiful pots I had on my patio, so I created The LEDGE! Now I can simply enjoy my morning coffee on the patio or host a dinner party, and The LEDGE is always in place. It is the most beautiful end table Ive ever had and I cant do without it! The LEDGE has excellent appeal because its as functional as it is versatile. Its available in three styles and can be used casually or made up to be chic and elegant. Whether youre lounging by the pool, relaxing in your garden or entertaining on a larger scale, The LEDGE makes is easy to Bring your garden into the Party!

Unique, Elegant and Functional its the perfect gift idea!

Tall urns can be easily transformed into wine bars for special occasions.

Festival Mozaic Celebrates Pop Cultures Influence on Classical Music

2011 Summer Music Festival, from July 14-24, showcases seasoned musicians, emerging artists, and classically-trained players working in other genres, to bridge the gap between pop culture and five centuries of classical music.
Festival Mozaic (formerly the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival) has announced its 2011 summer season, which marks the festivals 41st year of presenting intimate musical experiences on Californias picturesque Central Coast. The annual summer festival will take place July 14-24 in more than ten locations across San Luis Obispo County. To create an immersive musical experience, the festival chooses a theme each summer. This years focus is on the influence popular culture has had on classical music through the ages. This summer, were bridging the gap between popular culture and the music played in concert halls, said Music Director and virtuoso violinist Scott Yoo. Pop culture has always influenced the great composers through the ages, through fairy tales, literary works, the jazz age, film and even rock and roll. The 2011 festival presents works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvok, Ravel, Debussy, Corigliano, Copland, Poulenc and Grieg. Two world premieres will be featured, a new quintet by Patrick Zimmerli and a cello sonata by John Novacek. The festival draws players from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony and a host of fine orchestras across the country. Over the years, the festival has presented emerging artists early in their careers, including Richard Goode, Jeffrey Kahane, Hilary Hahn, Sir Neville Marinner, the Kronos Quartet, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and the first American premiere performances of Maxim and Dmitri Shostakovich with Mstislav Rostropovich, immediately following their defection from the Soviet Union in 1981. The 2011 guest artists in residency include violinist Caroline Campbell and internationally recognized pianists Orion Weiss, Anna Polonsky and John Novacek. The Festival also welcomes composer and saxophonist Patrick Zimmerli and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi. Performing in the Festival Fringe Series, which highlights classically-trained artists working in other genres, are Tango No. 9, a modern tango ensemble, and the Modern Mandolin Quartet, who specialize in bluegrass, Americana and other folk music for the mandolin. New this year, the Festival chamber players will perform on a Fringe concert called Classical Musicians Doing Decidedly Non-Classical Things, which will feature jazz, tango, bluegrass and even a little heavy metal. For tickets and schedule, go to www.festivalmozaic.com or call (805) 781-3009 or 1-877-881-8899.

Tolosa Winery opened its tasting room doors in August of 2004. Since then, it has continued to be a mainstay in San Luis Obispo tourism. Thanks to its proximity to downtown, the tasting room is a nearby oasis for locals and tourists alike. Marketing and Events Administrator, Katie Noonan adds, It is a great advantage being so close to both downtown SLO and the ocean. We receive a lot of walk-in guests, including locals and tourists that may have never planned to go wine tasting but because its so close or on the way to the hotel or beach it makes for an easy stop, without turning the entire day into a wine tasting trip. We also find that a lot of locals love that its so close to come out for lunch or bring family and friends for a quick trip into the beautiful San Luis Obispo Wine Country. In addition to being accessible for those in the San Luis Obispo area, Tolosas tasting room offers a myriad of tasting option for visitors. From a traditional tasting at the beautiful glass bar to self-guided tours around the property, Tolosas diverse portfolio of varietals specially paired international cheeses and Tolosa wines. Four wines are paired with four cheeses and the serene setting away from the tasting room is a more intimate experience with the wines. Tolosa has embraced the significant and burgeoning demographic in the wine industry; the Millennial generation, by creating the Clique Social Club. Noonan explains that this is not a wine club, but a social club, designed to make wine less intimidating and more fun. Benefits of Clique include free wine tasting during the week, invitations to exclusive social events and discounted prices on wine, merchandise and events. A members only commitment is purchasing one bottle a month. Taking its name from the California Mission that anchors the town of San Luis Obispo, Tolosa, like Gum Alley, the Fremont Theater or the Madonna Inn, is a must visit for both tourists and locals. Tolosa Winery is located at 4910 Edna Road in San Luis Obispo and is open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 782-0500 or visit the website at www.tolosawinery.com.

(ranging from Pinot Gris and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Syrah and Petite Sirah to name a few) produced allow a wine journey for a tasters palate. On Tolosas gorgeous, modern patio, one can enjoy wines by the glass; a terrific way to enjoy the scenery and any particular wine they would like to savor longer. On weekends the options increase for tasters at Tolosa. Resident Cheesemonger, John Shakley creates an artisan cheese pairing with Danika from local cheese shop Vivant, where guests can relax in the reserve Heritage Room overlooking the vineyards and sip

Winemaker Profile: Halter Ranch Winery

Kevin Sass
by Brette Ann Womack
Kevin Sass has been intimately acquainted with the Halter Ranch estate vineyard since 2000 when he began working as the Grower Relations Manager for Justin Vineyards and Winery. As a winemaker for Justin since 2002, Kevin has had the opportunity to work extensively with Halter Ranch grapes. Kevin, who grew up in Southern California, has two degrees Enology and Agricultural Business from California State University, Fresno. He will be working in Halter Ranchs brand new state of the art facility, set to be complete by the 2011 harvest. I am excited to be involved in the continuation of an amazing long-term project. My previous experience with Halter Ranchs grapes, combined with a new, state of the art facility, will allow me to showcase what Halter Ranch has to offer, expresses Kevin. Being a vineyard enthusiast, Kevin is most excited to work with Halter Ranchs expansive 250 planted acres. The vineyard boasts 20 distinctive varietals which grow in the unique microclimate of the property. Kevin promises to be entirely hands on with each and every acre; Each morning we meet to determine popular Estate Syrah which is sure to please the long time Halter Ranch fans. To keep cool during the upcoming warm summer months, Kevin recommends enjoying the Ctes de Paso Blanc. This Rhne white is a blend of Roussane, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Picpoul Blanc, which adds the necessary acidity to keep it fresh, explains Kevin. Its a wine not to miss; Kevin proclaims, if you have not tried [the wine], I guarantee you will enjoy it! Throughout the summer and into fall, Halter Ranch has plans to host several intimate events such as the Late Summer Covered Bridge Dinner where guests can enjoy a delicious menu paired with the estate wines. For more information and reservations, email info@halterranch.com or call 1-888-367-9977. The tasting room located on the corner of Vineyard Drive and Adelaida Road in Paso Robles and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and vineyard tours are available by appointment. We are all in for a treat in the coming years as the new vintages are released. Kevins passion for this magical property and obvious work ethic is sure to show in the wines!

where we will go next; it is micro-managing in a positive way. Looking toward the future, Kevin visualizes bottling Rhone and Bordeaux varietals that usually are used as blending grapes, such as Tannat, Malbec or Petit Verdot. These exclusive bottlings will truly showcase the wonder and complexity of the Halter Ranch Estate. Kevin continues to make the wildly

One pretty reliable way to find out just how good the food at a local restaurant is, is to ask somebody in the restaurant business. Ask a bartender, a waiter, anyone in fact, what they think of Mamas meatballs in San Luis Obispo and their lips begin to quiver, their eyes roll towards the heavens, they sigh; that is how good Mamas Meatball is. Set in a small courtyard off of one of the towns main streets, in a place called the Old Creamery, Mamas Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the take-out where people line up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with its mural of the Mediterranean across the back. Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes, many of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the economy and his customers wishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pasta dishes than there is space here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka sauce cannot go unmentioned). There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas (now available in two sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts. Mamas Meatball currently has two locations. The original is in the Old Creamery plaza at 570 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo, (805) 544-0861. Mamas Meatball is also available for your convenience in the south county at 325 Pier Avenue by the entrance of the Pismo Beach Dunes, (805) 473-2383. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m., closed on Mondays. You can order online at www.mamasmeatball.com. And, dont forgot they can also deliver and have very popular catering services, which work with groups (including weddings) of every type and size.

All Eyes are on Project Wind-Chime

Imagine 50 wind chimes from 10' to 30' tall, all of which carry a unique artistic theme. The individual wind chimes (sculptural works of art) will be placed at wineries and other key locations throughout the Paso Robles wine country. The goal is to create an, over the top, art happening that will blow the socks off the artistic charts so to speak. Project Wind-Chime is the brainchild of American Artist, Dale Evers. The goal is to garner national media attention and bring an additional 250,000 tourists per year to experience the ongoing Exhibit, Evers explains. Paso Robles wine country is the perfect venue according to the artist. Paso Robles is experiencing an art renaissance of sorts. No doubt, the wine region speaks for itself while it continues its meteoric rise as a world contender as a producer of fine wine and culinary delights. Evers believes that the region has a unique opportunity to establish itself as a visual arts tourist destination as well. By adding a layer of intrigue through engendering a world-class visual arts program, Paso Robles could double down and bolster the local economy. In short, the idea is to bring more bodies into tasting rooms, restaurants and boutiques and add another dimension to the existing charm of our community. Moreover, the arts will benefit. The first installation was in June at the venerable Zin Alley Winery at the crossroads of Vineyard Drive and 46 West. Visual Art Pioneers such as Sculpterra Winery, Studios On The Park and Dale Evers Studio, have laid the foundation for cultural groath. We are hoping for others to share our vision to expand the north county art renaissance. If you would like to know more about the art of Dale Evers, log on to www.daleeversstudio.com and www.zapopanart.com.

RiverStar Vineyards The Complete Wine Country Experience
RiverStar Vineyards is a 60-acre vineyard, winery and home to the Dutton Family. These family-owned vines, originally planted in 1992, produce elegant wines with great style and character. Originally a horse ranch, a two-story horse stable is now the home of RiverStar Vineyard offices and a three-bedroom vacation rental appropriately named The Ranch. The Back Porch, a cozy, private one-bedroom suite located adjacent to the Dutton family home, is the newest addition to RiverStar Vineyards Vacation Rentals. A second horse stable has been transformed into a welcoming tasting room where you can taste 100% estate grown wines that are extremely food friendly. Each bottle delivers rich flavors that will turn an everyday dinner into a joyful celebration. RiverStar wine prices range from $16 (Entice Blush) to $25 (2007 Cabernet Sauvignon) making these foodfriendly wines affordable to have at your dinner table daily to share with family and friends. In addition to the stand alone varietals of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, RiverStar specializes in unique red wine blends: Sunset Red, a smooth blend of Syrah and Merlot; Affinity, a 2007 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel; and Allure, a delightful blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the incredible view from the tables located just outside the tasting room doors. Winemaker Profile: Salisbury Vineyards

Harold Osborne
by Michael Cervin
Salisbury Vineyards, situated in the maritime influences of nearby by Avila Bay, has created a unique wine experience that includes tasting their wine in an historic wood schoolhouse, and viewing art in the adjoining fine art gallery. Its a pleasure for the eyes and palette. But wine doesnt just happen, just like art which takes time to create, wine must be created and Salisbury relies on the talented hand of winemaker Harold Osborne. Osborne learned about wine by attending the two best wine schools in California at that time; U.C. Davis and Fresno State and started first by making sparkling wine at the well regarded Schramsburg Cellars in Napa for nearly a decade. He relocated to the Central Coast and has accumulated more than 30 years of winemaking experience here including Salisburys neighbor, Kelsey See Canyon, Masion Deutz (now Laetitia) and he was the first winemaker at Cambria Winery in Santa Maria. With a creative bent in the cellar he has earned the nickname, the wine doctor, and this doctor loves to blend wines. Im a blender at heart, because I make Champagne, he says of his experiences with sparkling wines which laid the foundation of properly blending different grapes to make the best possible wine. Blending a wine is just like mixing color and texture for a canvas. I wonder what it would be like to put wines together to see what happens, he says. Therefore youll see lots of blends like Rucks Red, a combination of Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot, or Devil Dog, a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I blend for the positive characters of each wine, he says. He is also influenced by his time spent in the Australian wine region and decided, along with many other winemakers, that cork isnt the best seal for wine. Screw caps provide the most consistent seal for wine. He admits. We know that every single bottle is going to be the same. The only reason (the wine industry) still uses cork is because of tradition. He also eschews over oaked wine and prefers to allow the fruit inherent in the

grape to be the same fruit in the bottle. It is that continuity that is important to Osborne, reflecting of three decades of area winemaking. Taste continuity in your glass at Salisbury Vineyards tasting room, located at 6985 Ontario Road in Avila Valley. They are open Monday through Thursday from noon to 5 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For directions or more information, call (805) 595-9463 or go to www.salisburyvineyards.com.

Central Coast Shakespeare Festival

July 14-August 13 Shakespeare Under The Stars
Experience live, classical theater in an outdoor setting this summer with Shakespeare Under the Stars, when the annual Central Coast Shakespeare Festival kicks off their 2011 season. The Festival is scheduled from July 14 through August 13 and will feature two lively comedies, The Comedy of Errors and As You Like It. All performances take place at the River Oaks Events Ampitheatre in Paso Robles. The Shakespeare Festival is the only nonprofit theatre group producing classical theatre, specifically Shakespeare, in repertory in San Luis Obispo County since 1997. The company runs two shows in alternate weeks using the same cast and crew members for both productions. This repertory system allows the company to broaden the context of their work with complementary shows; develop a versatile core of actors and designers; challenge company members to explore and expand their talents; and create opportunities for a rich artistic dialogue between directors and designers, working in concurrent shows. timeless classic tales that enlighten and entertain. Its easy to forget sometimes what makes us feel passionate about living. Theatre can remind us all to live a life full of passion. The company continues to evolve and grow, aspiring to create a full-time professional repertory company similar to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. Their hope is to establish San Luis Obispo County as a destination location for quality classical theatre. This summer the Festival will present two of Shakespeares most light hearted plays. The season will open with The Comedy of Errors, one of Shakespeares earliest works, from July 14 through August 12. It is his shortest and one of his most farcical comedies, with the majority of the humor coming from slapstick and mistaken identity, in addition to puns and word play. The Comedy of Errors (along with The Tempest) is one of only two of Shakespeare's plays to observe the classical unities. The second play, As You Like It, will be presented from July 21 through August 13. The play is a pastoral comedy believed to have been written in early 1600. The work was based upon the early prose romance Rosalynde, Euphues Golden Legacie by Thomas Lodge. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone the court jester, to find safety and eventually love in the Forest of Arden. The play features one of Shakespeares most famous and oft-quoted speeches, All the worlds a stage, and is the origin of the phrase too much of a good thing. For more information, send an email to info@centralcoastshakespeare.org, call (805) 546-4224 or visit the website at centralcoastshakespeare.org.

The Shakespeare Festival is strongly committed to the enrichment of the local actor, director, designer and technician, providing them the opportunity to work alongside guest artists from other areas. Artistic director, Zoe Saba, explains the effect live theatre has on the actors and the audience, Those of us who bring you the festival each year have our own particular passion theatre, she said. We are passionate about bringing you each season

Living The Fantasy Life with Tessa Marie Wines

By Carolyn Turner
Abandon the search for truth, settle for a good fantasy. This saying graces each bottle of Tessa Marie Wines, created by up-andcoming winemaker Tessa Marie Parker. Tessa is one whos blessed to have found her fantasy early on. Of course, being born into a family of winemakers certainly helps, which meant that seed of passion and joy for winemaking was planted in Tessa from the beginning by her both her father and grandfather. Growing up, Tessa would help her father Eli Parker, winemaker and owner of Epiphany wines, as well as her grandfather, the one and only Fess Parker of Fess Parker Winery. After graduating from high school in 2004, 18-year old Tessa enrolled in the Enology and Viticulture program at Allan Hancock College, too young to even taste the wines she learned about. It was during her first harvest that Tessa discovered Sangiovese, and was instantly unique and flavorful. After getting a few harvests under her belt, Tessa decided to open up a tasting room in downtown Los Olivos in April 2010. The tasting room is shared with E&T Wines, a winery partnership between her father Eli (E) and herself (T). Visitors have the opportunity to taste both Tessa Marie wines as well as E&T wines, and will often have the opportunity to meet Tessa. My goal is to make good wine, said Tessa. I want to touch every aspect of the winemaking process a create wine Im proud of. Thats why my name is on every bottle.

smitten with this bright, bold, food-friendly wine. Sangiovese is my pride and joy, said Tessa. I have a lot of respect for Italian varietal and enjoy creating them with a California twist. This passion led her to create a delicious Vermentino, as well as Coquette, her flagship blend of Sangiovese and Syrah. Coquette means a flirt in French, said Tessa. I wanted to make wines that are true to myself: something different, cute, fun. Although her production is small (only 1,000 cases) each one of her wines is certainly

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-the-art stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. Stay tuned to www.figmtnbrew.com for more information, or follow them on Facebook: Figueroa Mountain Brewing for the latest news and updates.

Antonio Moretti is the creator and owner of the tasting room Taste of Sta. Rita Hills. His passion for wine and food goes back to his early age when his family was involved in the restaurant business. When he moved to the United States from Italy the passion became his career, and for the past 30 years he has devoted his time between managing restaurants and working in wine distribution. A few years ago, after visiting the wine areas of the Central Coast several times, he was so inspired by the Sta. Rita Hills that he knew he wanted to make this his home. After meeting and working with some of the winemakers and owners of Sta. Rita Hills appellation, it became very clear to him that he wanted to be involved as much as possible with the wine business that was quickly growing there. Upon tasting wines throughout the area, he realized that there were many wineries that were open by appointment only that deserved more active representation. So the Taste of Sta. Rita Hills was born as a way to expose these special wines to a wider audience. In addition, Antonio and his wife work with Steve Clifton to make their own label Moretti focused on wines made in a more European, food-friendly style. Visit Antonio at his tasting room in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto and taste some of the finest wines Sta. Rita Hills has to offer! Taste of Sta. Rita Hills is located at 1505 E Chestnut Avenue, Lompoc. The Annual Chardonnay Symposium, July 22-23

July 22-23, SMVWINES presents The Chardonnay Symposium, an insightful weekend of education and exploration designed to enlighten wine consumers, industry professionals, and media on West Coast wine producing regions and winemaking styles, and their effects on America's favorite wine. Friday night, Sierra Madre Vineyards celebrates its 40th anniversary at The Chardonnay Symposium Welcome Barbecue feast featuring Chef Ricks Ultimately Fine Gourmet food paired with Sierra Madres award-winning Chardonnays. SPECIALIZING IN SANTA BARBARA & CENTRAL COAST PINOT NOIRS

LOS OLIVOS
Qup Tasting Room
Qup is a family winery sharing space with Verdad and several other wine labels. Under the Qup label we focus on premium Syrah and Rhne varietals as well as Chardonnay. With Verdad Qup focuses on Spanish varietals, producing Tempranillo, Albario and a Ros of Grenache. Based in Santa Maria, Qup was founded in 1982 by Bob Lindquist who got his start in winemaking while giving tours and being a cellar rat for Zaca Mesa, under the guidance of Ken Brown and Jim Clendenen. Bobs first vintages included Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Vin Gris a ros blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Bob would eventually focus on the Rhne varietals and Chardonnay and come to be known for a pioneering spirit. While using old world wine techniques in the winery, like whole-cluster fermentations and opentopped fermenters, Bob pushed for new varietals becoming the first to produce Syrah, Viognier and a Rhne blend in Santa Barbara County and the first to produce Marsanne in California. In 1989, the Miller family approached Bob with an opportunity to build a winemaking facility at the esteemed Bien Nacido Vineyard. Joined by his long-time friend and fellow winemaker, Jim Clendenen, Bob set down his roots and started what would become a premier winemaking facility and training ground for some of Santa Barbaras finest winemakers. Included in this is Louisa Sawyer Lindquist, Bobs wife and the winemaker for Verdad. Founded in 2000, Verdad has pioneered Spanish varietals

They planted the property to Syrah, Grenache, Albario, Tempranillo, Marsanne and Pinot Noir. Additionally they decided to farm the property using Biodynamics, furthering their commitment to organic and sustainable farming practices. By 2008, the first vintage was ready and the vineyard produced some of their finest wines that vintage. In addition to making wines from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard, Qup and Verdad source fruit from Bien Nacido, Ibarra-Young, Purisima Mt. Vineyard and many others. Qupes wines are made in an elegant fashion, with a focus on balanced wines. Acid is a key component of the wines, making them food friendly and adding to their ageability. On Saturday afternoon, August 20th, the Sogno (Dreams) Del Fiore Ranch in Santa Ynez will host the Gathering II Wine Tasting and Dinner. This second annual event is a benefit for People Helping People (PHP) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The fundraiser features a champagne reception; tasting of numerous premium wines; and appetizer, dinner and dessert buffets prepared by renowned local and nationally recognized chefs. In the past, the Gathering was a private affair for members of the Fiores wine club. However, the Fiores wanted to give something back to the community that has so readily accepted the transplants from New Jersey via Orange County. We have found two charities that we really believe in and that make a difference in peoples lives and we want to continue to support them, said Fiore. According to Fiore, the Gathering refers to the events format which includes numerous chefs preparing fabulous dishes paired perfectly with exquisite wines. The wine tasting will include local and other California wines and those featured by Fiore in his wine club. This year, ten award-winning chefs have been invited to participate. Restaurants represented include The Ballard Inn & Restaurant, Brothers Restaurant, Chef Ricks, Full of Life Flat Bread, Trattoria Grappolo; Trattoria Uliveto, The Chefs Touch, Petros, Cecco Ristorante, and Di Paolos Italian Ristorante (Penns Grove, N.J.). More restaurants are expected to participate along with some well known amateur and winemaker chefs. Featured wineries include Alban Vineyards, Alta Colina, Arcadian, Baker and Brain, Caliza, Carr Vineyards and Winery, Emerson Brown, Falcone Family Vineyards, Kosta Browne, Grassi, LAventure, Melville, Paul Hobbs, Pisoni, Roar, Saxum, Seagrape Wine Company, Siduri, Sinor La Vallee, Torrin, and Villa Creek. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and costs $125 per person for Fiore wine club members and $145 per person for non-members. To obtain more information or to reserve one of a limited number of seats, visit www.sognodelfiore.com/events.html.
