Blanchard, K. H., & Johnson, S. (1982). The one minute manager . New York: Morrow.
The one minute manager is one of the most famous and bestselling books, as over 13 million copies have been sold, on business leadership and management. It is written by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson both of them are famous leadership and motivation gurus. The ideas of effective management are presented in this book in a parable style story of a young manager, who is not having success, but he hears of a very successful manger and goes to him to learn whatever he could about managing people, and then that successful manager teaches him three principles of good management. They are: One-Minute Goal Setting: Authors say that all good performances begin with a clear statement of what good behavior looks like. The successful manager in the story has his people write out their goals in 250 words or less, which focuses on good behavior and then he encourages people to read their goals weekly and he monitors them to see whether the behavior of these people matches their goals or not. One-Minute Praising: The authors imply that it is very important to congratulate and praise those whom he notices are doing things accurately or almost completely accurate. The successful manager in their parable monitors the behavior of his people and when he sees people doing the right thing or almost the right thing he tells them about it and tells them how he feels about it, encourages them to continue their good behavior, and shakes hands with them to reinforce the positive behavior. One-Minute reprimands: The successful manager in the story notices that someone is doing something wrong he tells that person about it, tells them how he feels about it, shows them their written goals, and then encourages them to do the right thing and shakes hands with them to restore the self-worth of those he reprimanded. The ideas presented in this are very innovative and that is one of the reason this book in so popular. This book will help me in my research by showing how great leaders deal with people under their leadership. This book is unbiased and considering its popularity, its principles are effective.

Collins, J. C. (2001). Good to great: why some companies make the leap--and others don't. New York, NY: Harperbusiness.
This book written by Jim Collins is one of the most famous books on business leadership ever written, even though the purpose of the author when they began research for their project was to Find how good companies or mediocre companies turn themselves into great companies, but he says that it is a certain type of leadership, he calls Level 5 leadership, that if their CEO possess will make their company great. The author presented elements that were common in companies that turned themselves from average to extraordinary. They are 1) Level 5 Leadership: Level 5 leaders work for the betterment of their organization not themselves. These leaders are generally not very famous even though the result their company achieves beats the market average. For examples, 3M is believed to be one of the best led companies in the world but not many people have heard of their CEOs even though this company had over 7 CEOs since it began. Level 5 leaders blame themselves for failures but give the credit of success to their team. 2) Building a right team: It is crucial to have good people on the team and then we chose the direction of the company. Chose people who are self disciplined, know their job and work well in teams. 3) Find the truth: Find accurate information about the company and the marketplace and not try to live in an illusionary world, but dont lose hope in company even if the facts show that your company is in bad shape. 4) Establish a good business model for making sustained profit. 5) Stick to the model. 6) Use technology to accelerate profit growth. 7) Synergy is better.

Chernow, R. (1998). Titan: the life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.. New York: Random House.
This book is one of the popular biographies of business people. It was written by a very famous biographer Ron Chernow and talks about the life and career of John davison Rockefeller who is probably the wealthiest man of all time. Reading this books one understand the personal qualities of Rockefeller that made him so successful. Here is a summary of the book: He was born on July 8th, 1839 to William and Eliza Rockefeller. Both the good and the bad qualities that he was accused of in his adult life were formed because of his abnormal childhood. This fact, to a degree, answers the question whether leaders are born or made. His father was accused of various crimes from murder to stealing horses and used to keep his family on the move so that he is not persecuted. He used to play financial games with his children and used to cheat claiming that it will make them smart. His mother on the other hand was religious and could be strict with John at times. John Rockefeller started working when he was still very young and impressed his employers with his discipline, hard work and for being a responsible person. Few years later he started his own business and had a business partner. He showed self control and honesty even if it meant losing business deals. He became wealthy quite soon, and soon started his own oil business. Within a few years he had the largest oil processing company in the world. He was very imaginative when he came up with the idea of consolidating all the companies into one big corporation and he was very competitive to the point of ruthlessness, and some of his tactics would be considered unethical today, for example having special deals with railroad companies that he will ship a large quantity of barrels with them and provide them a specific quantity of product he produces but they have to charge higher prices to his competitors. Reading the life story of John Davison Rockefeller one can see that he was very hard working, working over 16 hours a day sometimes. He came up with very creative solutions to problems he faced. He was persistent. When he was 16 he was looking for a job he visited every business organization in his town twice in less than 2 weeks. He was very self-confident, secretive, and very competitive.

This book helped me realize what good leaders look for when choosing people. They answer the following questions:
y y y y y

Have you surrounded yourself with capable individuals, and trained them? Do you trust that they have the capacity and abilities to do their job? Do your people understand and embrace the mission and objectives of your organization? Do they know you will support their actions and in order to reach that goal? Machiavelli, N., & Botha, A. (2003). Niccolo Machiavelli--The prince . Hartbeespoort, South Africa: Botha.
This book is a classic in business and politics literature. This book was written by Niccolo Machiavelli as a gift to the new ruler of Florence. He discusses strategies by which statesmen can gain power and how they can maintain power. Some of the ideas mentioned in this book can be unethical. This book was placed on the list of books prohibited by Pope. Niccolo says that countries are either principalities or republic. In business management, it means that companies either have centralized control or decentralized control. Niccolo Machiavelli says that principalities are either inherited or are new. In business management, it can mean that the new CEO is chosen either because of his family connections or by his talents or political strategies. He says it is easier to manage hereditary principality than new one because the new leader because people are already familiar with the rulers and all he has to do is to keep past institutions intact. In business management, it can mean that it is easier to manage a company whose new CEO is already familiar to the employees. He says enemies must either be pampered or annihilated. In business management, it means that either get you competition, whether human or organization, to work with you or destroy them. Machiavelli then mentions characteristics that earn praise and criticisms to princes, or in this case businessmen, should have. Characteristics that earn praise: 1) Courage 3) Compassion 4) craftiness 5) Generosity. 2) cruelty 3) Stubbornness 4) 2) Faith

Characteristics that earn criticism: 1) Cowardice

miserliness. He says ideally a prince, or a businessmen, should have all of those qualities that earn praise. Machiavelli analyses the political structure of organizations and how to gain power for oneself. Many famous people like Napoleon Bonaparte, King Henry VIII, Emperor Charles 5, Benito Mussolini, American mobsters John Gotti and Roy DeMeo were all influenced by this book. This book will help me understand the power structure of organizations and how business leaders can gain power and qualities of good prince are mentioned. Josephson, M. (1934). The robber barons the great American capitalists, 18611901,. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co..
The robber barons is a famous book written by Mathew Josephson about those businessmen who became extremely successful after the civil war, some of them gained almost complete control over their business markets. It documents the industrialization of United States and businessmen who were involved in the process. This books talks about their business strategies, provides brief biographies and talks about their companies. It shows that business leaders considered great are not necessarily ethical in all situations. We can note some similarities in most of the businessmen discussed in this book. First, is that they were young when they started business. John davison started business when he was near 19 years old and by civil war he was in his 20s, so was Andrew Carnegie, Jay Gould, Philip Armour, J.P.Morgan, James Hill. Collis Huntington and Leland Stanford were over thirty. Second element common to all of them was their self-reliance. Most of these robber barons left their paternal shelters before the civil war and were earning their bread by themselves. Third element common to all of them is their ambitiousness. Jay Gould whose father kept him on the farm once said to his father,If you give me some time, I will make my fortune. The author says, one after another of the young men of 61 voiced the same dream. Many of these businessmen were extremely competitive. John Davison Rockefellers competitive spirit is legendary. At one time, John Rockefellers company controlled over 88% of refined oil flows in the world. Andrew Carnegie had great control over steel manufacturing industry. He bought at least one of his major competitors to reduce competition for his company. This is an interesting book. This book shows that it takes more than good character to become a great business leader. One can learn a lot about how these businessmen ran their corporations. We can analyze the personality of these businesspeople and characteristics that were crucial to their success.

Bennis, W. G. (1989). On becoming a leader . Reading, Mass.: AddisonWesley Pub. Co..

Written by famous leadership guru, Warren Bennis, on becoming a leader is a very famous book on becoming a leader. The author himself is not a business leader or a country leader but a teacher. This book derives lessons from the experiences of 28 diverse cases of leadership. This book tells stories about leaders who lived those lessons. Warren Bennis doesnt tell how to become a good leader. He dismisses leadership in weekend type of courses such as microwave theory of leadership: pop in Mr. or Mrs. Average and in 60 seconds a leader comes out. He says that becoming a great leader is very challenging. He discusses what leadership is. He says leadership courses can teach skills but they cannot teach leadership qualities like vision and character. Warren Bennis say that we learn from failures. One of the lessons he learned from all of his leaders is the necessity of making mistakes which they hold virtually synonymous with growth and progress. Warren Bennis says that it is important to know one self, i.e. how to become our self, how to take charge, or initiative, how to express oneself. He says no one can teach us these skills except ourselves. He says it is important to learn the about the world we are working in. He said, To become a true leader one must know the world as well as one knows oneself. He says that the world we are working in today is, volatile, turbulent, ambiguous managerial surroundings that will suffocate us if we let them. He says we should learn from experience, especially adverse experience, and increase our wisdom by learning from that experience. Many other skills were mentioned in other books we will consult during this research. For example, ability to relate well with others, applying the golden rules, that is treat others the way you want others to treat you, competence, showing trust in others, motivating people and attracting them, having good judgment and character.

Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2002). The leadership challenge (3rd ed.). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
This book was called the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership by Marshall Goldsmith, who is recognized by almost every major business publication as one Americas leading executive educator and coach. This book like The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons is a very practical book. Instead of studying extraordinary business leaders, it studies ordinary people who performed at their personal best when they were leading people. The authors of this book believe that leadership can be learned. This book says that exemplary leaders do five things: 1) Model The Way: A person must walk the walk. The leader sets the example for others. Leaders should clarify values. First, they should know their own values or principles and then the principles of the organization as a whole and should align his values to that of the organization. 2) Inspire a shared vision: Leaders inspire people to have the same vision. To achieve this end, they analyze the situation first. They have to analyze future possibilities and risks and then they have to make others commit to that goal. By commitment we dont mean merely doing what they are told. To achieve this goal, they have to understand people under their leadership, their goals, their values and their visions. 3) Challenge the process: The leaders try to innovate. No process is set in stone that is it cannot be changed. Leaders try to find ways of doing things better. Listening to people involved with the organization can help notice new opportunities. 4) Enable others to act: Leaders have to get all the people who will play any roles in the project to collaborate. To get this result, leaders have to make their employees feel empowered. 5) Encourage Heart: Being a caring and sincere leader boosts peoples spirit and brings them forward.
